2 Australia The official tourism site for Australia is below. Lots of important information, including information for planning your trip, airlines and travel, visa requirements, places to see and the like. Please note it will be winter in July and temperatures vary widely depending where you are visiting within Australia. The further south the colder it will be. You will very likely need a winter coat/jacket, hat, gloves, and scarf for Melbourne and Sydney. But these will most likely not be needed in Brisbane, except evenings and early mornings when you will need a coat/jacket. (For more information re weather in Brisbane – see Visit Brisbane below). It is important to see your travel agent and/or talk to your airline company regarding flights to and flights and accommodation around Australia as early as possible. http://www.australia.com

Accommodation in Brisbane Christa has suggested that you select accommodation in an area of the city called “South Bank” [She has two suggestions – see below] or in on the “Colleges” (Halls of Residence accommodation) on the University of Queensland, St Lucia campus [also see below]. If you would prefer to be in the CBD and then see Ibis Hotel Turbot Street. If you want luxury then The Treasury Heritage Hotel in the CBD is lovely. (More details re these hotels below).

Hotels/Accommodation on Southbank or the CBD There are lots of different areas of the city where you can find accommodation. Christa has suggested accommodation in the area of the city called “South Bank”. She likes the area. It is near the Central Business District (CBD) (walking distance, across the bridge/Brisbane River or via ferry/City Cat) and lots of restaurants are located at South Bank or in streets adjacent to the Brisbane River. Here are 2 hotel suggestions for South Bank. Christa has named them so if you stay there you can meet up with other people from IARLD and share taxis, or use public transport together to get to the University of Queensland, St Lucia campus, walk to get the boat for the Tour on Wednesday 5th July [see below re booking the tour yourself] etc. Please book your hotel yourself.

If these do not appeal or you want to be on the other side of the river (within the CBD) please also arrange yourself. Christa has named 2 CBD hotels also – 2 very different hotels. Again please book yourself.

Brisbane Airport Brisbane Airport has 2 major terminals – International and Domestic. They are 4kms apart and there are transport services between the terminals See http://www.bne.com.au/ You can find information about getting between the terminals and transport into the city on this link.

Transport – From Airport to Accommodation On your arrival at Brisbane airport: There is a Travel/Transport information desk at both the International and Domestic Airport. Make use of them or use the link below to plan getting 6 from the airport to your accommodation. Note: Taxis are quite expensive in Australia and you will be travelling 30 mins approx to CBD and South Bank or 45 mins approx. to UQ campus at St Lucia. • If staying at a hotel in the Brisbane CBD perhaps take a train from airport and stop in city at a railway station near your hotel (use your hotel address as a guide in the Planner see link below). • If at a hotel at South Bank perhaps take a train from airport to South Bank Railway Station – you can walk from station to Rydges or Mantra hotels. • If staying at a College on the UQ campus at St Lucia, you might want to take the train to Railway Station, get off there and then take a taxi to the UQ campus at St Lucia and direct to the College. Ask someone to direct you to the taxi rank – there is one outside Woolworths. Transport – From Accommodation to University of Queensland, St Lucia • For your Bus trip from the CBD to University of Queensland use planner (see link below) – easiest to go by bus. Take a bus Via Toowong Bus stop to Bus stop = St Lucia University of Queensland, Chancellor Place Stop. Walk then to Building 24, Social Sciences Building, Campbell Rd (likely conference building). • For your trip from South Bank you can travel by train from the South Bank Railway Station and the bus (need to do a combination if taking the train first) or just bus – use the planner. If by train take the train to Toowong Railway Station and then bus (ask someone who looks like a student how to get to the bus stop to go to UQ St Lucia campus). To Bus stop = St Lucia University of Queensland, Chancellor Place Stop. Walk then to Building 24, Social Sciences Building, Campbell Rd.

Christa’s tips about visiting New Zealand If you have the time -- do visit New Zealand. Make sure you book early. Both New Zealand and Australia are experiencing a tourist boom so make sure you book early. Although New Zealand looks small it takes time to get around NZ and travel internally also often takes longer than imagined. If you only have a short time – make sure you visit the South Island. You have not seen NZ unless you have been to the South Island. The scenery will take your breath away. If you can visit the North Island then Auckland and then Rotorua are Christa’s picks. If you have more time include the Bay of Islands or the Coromandel. Further it will be winter and usually it is very cold in New Zealand. Houses and buildings do not have the heating of many houses and buildings in the Northern Hemisphere. Take “winter woollies”! There are New Zealand companies who can assist in organising a NZ itinerary for you. Disclosure: Christa’s nephew, Chris Tylee is an Inbound Travel Consultant with “Discover New Zealand.” http://www.discovernewzealand.com/. Information also on this site re: visas, etc.
