OLYMPISM and the OLYMPIC SYMBOL Principles and Usage Guidelines OLYMPISM AND THE OLYMPIC SYMBOL Principles and Usage Guidelines October 2017 Dear Friends, The Olympic symbol is one of the most recognised brands in the world. The five interlocking rings on a white background represent Olympism and its values of excellence, respect and friendship. It also stands for the Unity in Diversity of the Olympic Movement. It is a symbol with global visibility, seen by billions of people throughout the world not only during the Olympic Games. Like Olympism, the Olympic symbol is timeless and carries universal significance. The Olympic Charter defines the significance of the Olympic rings as a key Olympic property. It is therefore a shared responsibility of everyone in the Olympic Movement and beyond to protect it by using it correctly. These guidelines exist to ensure that the integrity of the Olympic symbol is safeguarded whenever it is used. We have updated the guidelines to ensure that they take into account the new philosophy of Olympic Agenda 2020 to extend the use of the Olympic brand for non-commercial use and to reflect a constantly evolving world. Using the Olympic symbol with the integrity of its intended purpose and thereby promoting the Olympic values in today’s fast-changing world is both a responsibility and privilege. It is my hope that these guidelines will be used in this spirit. In this way, we are carrying the ideals of our founder, Pierre de Coubertin, into the present day and ensuring their relevance for the future. Thomas Bach, IOC President 3 INTRODUCTION These guidelines provide direction for the use of the Olympic symbol by the Olympic Movement and its authorised stakeholders. They aim to preserve the integrity and authority of the Olympic symbol while ensuring its visibility and inclusiveness. All rights to the Olympic symbol and other Olympic properties belong exclusively to the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The mission entrusted to it is universal and timeless.” PIERRE DE COUBERTIN Founder of the modern Olympic Games 6 OLYMPISM Introduction Olympism is a philosophy of life, which places sport at the service of humankind. “Modern Olympism was conceived by Pierre de Coubertin, on whose initiative the International Athletic Congress of Paris was held in June 1894. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) constituted itself on 23 June 1894. The first Olympic Games (Games of the Olympiad) of modern times were celebrated in Athens, Greece, in 1896. In 1914, the Olympic flag presented by Pierre de Coubertin at the Paris Congress was adopted. It includes the five interlaced rings, which represent the union of the five continents and the meeting of athletes from throughout the world at the Olympic Games. The first Olympic Winter Games were celebrated in Chamonix, France, in 1924.” 1 1 Olympic Charter, Preamble 7 OLYMPISM Fundamental Principles of Olympism The Fundamental Principles of Olympism are presented in the Olympic Charter: 4. This flag flew in Alexandria (Egypt) on 5 April 1914 at the Pan-Egyptian Games, organised to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the reestablishment of the Olympic Games. 10 THE OLYMPIC SYMBOL Introduction The Olympic symbol, widely known throughout the world and throughout the remainder of these guidelines as the Olympic rings, is the visual ambassador of Olympism for billions of people. For each and every one of us, that passion continues into everyday life, where we advocate for change on issues of great importance to us and our world. That desire to drive change can naturally make it very tempting to use the platform of an appearance at the Olympic Games to make our point. However, all of us are here at the Olympic Games because, one day, we dreamt of being an Olympian, and maybe even an Olympic champion. The unique nature of the Olympic Games enables athletes from all over the world to come together in peace and harmony. We believe that the example we set by competing with the world’s best while living in harmony in the Olympic Village is a uniquely positive message to send to an increasingly divided world. This is why it is important, on both a personal and a global level, that we keep the venues, the Olympic Village and the podium neutral and free from any form of political, religious or ethnic demonstrations. If we do not, the life’s work of the athletes around us could be tarnished, and the world would quickly no longer be able to look at us competing and living respectfully together, as conflicts drive a wedge between individuals, groups and nations. Most studies have found that population and GDP were positively related to the number of Olympic medals awarded. The present study generally confirms these earlier results. In addition, lagged values of medals awarded were also significant, suggesting that prior performance is an excellent proxy of unobservable country-specific attributes that may contribute to overall Summer Olympic performance. Finally, using the models estimated in the present study, predictions were made for the 2012 Summer Olympics. These predictions were very similar to the actual values and thus serve as a test of the statistical robustness of the models estimated in this study. They have been an arena for diplomatic controversies between sovereign countries and even internally within state structures. Nonetheless, Norway participated in the Olympic Games in Paris 1900 in its own right, due to the huge degree of Norwegian self-governance within the union and the subsequent development of its own sports system. This article examines the role of sport for the Norwegian nation building process and the impact of the dissolution of the Swedish-Norwegian Union onto the Nordic Games and Norway’s early involvement in the Olympic Movement. Being the most important predecessor for the Olympic Winter Games, the Nordic Games are of particular interest also for Olympic history. Introduction Despite having gone through a marathon 18 days full of events against all odds due to the pandemic, the glamour of the Summer Olympic Games lived on as the entire world got together in a true show of force and unity with athletes battling it out to the least shot, millimetre and point to return back home as Olympic heroes. The starting lists and medals’ table have, as in previous editions, served as an ideal platform for the traditional powerhouses in world sport to further demonstrate their dominance with a few surprises making the headlines from time to time. Ever since the inaugural edition of the Games for the Small States of Europe (GSSE) held in 1985 in San Marino, this biannual event became a benchmark for the participating countries to gauge their progress against other similar countries whose population is less than 1 million inhabitants. As per Table 1, if the same model were to be applied across the globe at Olympic level, 48 countries would fit in the bill for such a comparative exercise with Cyprus’ population, one of the founding members of the GSSE, now increasing to 1.2 million.
