The Calling Fersen Corner This Sunday Gospel is the calling of the twelve disciples and We got the kindergarten children to role play Mother sending them off on mission. The Reading taken from Paul’s Theresa entering a West Beirut war on 13th of August 1982. We had one of the students act as Mother Letter to the Philippians tells of his total commitment to the Theresa and one of the teachers act as the Priest and calling of Christ. Let us take a closer look at what it means to officers talking to Mother Theresa. follow Christ. Mother Theresa: “I want to go into west Beirut” Firstly, Paul writes, ‘I regard everything as loss because of the Priest: “I’m sorry Mother, but you physically can’t enter west Beirut, there is a war going on! Bombs going off.” surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus’ (v8). One who is called by God sees only God and nothing else matters. Our daily Mother Theresa: I want to go to the Orphanage and pick up the pursuits of recognition, wages, company etc. all have no value children up one, two, one, two. in the light of God who alone gives the fullest meaning to our Priest: Mother you can’t go in! They killed a priest last week because lives. The rest becomes tasteless. he was a priest! Mother Theresa: All for Jesus! Secondly, Paul writes, ‘I want to know Christ and the power of Officers: Mother. You physically cannot enter west Beirut, unless the his resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by becoming bridge is clear and its ceasefire. Mother you need a cease fire to get like him’ (v10). The one who is enticed by God, wants more and into west Beirut. more of God. They desire deeper knowledge and intimacy with Mother Theresa: oh, tomorrow is the Eve of Our Lady’s feast day in God and are willing to follow the path of Christ no matter the church. So, we’ll have a cease fire. where it will take them. It is the desire to be like Christ, who has totally consumed one with love. Officer: Mother I’m glad you’re a woman of faith and you’re on our side, but aren’t you being a little tight with God. Thirdly, Paul writes, ‘forgetting what lies behind and training Mother Theresa: Ohhh no, I’ve spoken to Our lady, and we’ll have a forward to what lies ahead’ (v13). To be called by God and to ceasefire on her feast day. And ’I ll make arrangements that you come with me. follow, is to put behind one, all that has been and set one’s eyes on God. To use all one’s body, mind, heart and soul. Next morning: News camera Panning across west Beirut at dawn, stillness. Reporter: We seem to have a ceasefire in west Beirut. The Calling is to commit, to follow through, to pursue, to give all in the journey of life as one moves closer and closer to God, Mother Theresa: Enters the abandon orphanage of 100 disabled children and rescues them. the very heart of one’s being. Amen. Sr Margaret Ghosn MSHF Jacob Laous The Servant’s Word The Kingdom of Heaven Has Come Near Brothers and Sisters in Christ, After Pentecost which ignited the fire of love and faith in the disciples through the coming of the Holy Spirit upon them and upon all the people who were with them, our Church commenced its mission by taking the Good News to those who were far and those who were near, by request from the Lord Jesus. In the previous Sundays, we have seen how the Most Holy Trinity is the essence of our Christian faith, and how the Holy Spirit is the teacher of the burgeoning Church, the security of her teachings and the cause of her joy and happiness. On this Sunday, there is a re-iteration of the identity of the Disciples, to prevent any temptation that may lead them to believe that they are the origin of the mission which they are carrying out, or they are its life and pride. This Sunday’s Gospel summarises the identity of the “apostle” in three points: First, the apostle is personally chosen by name, by the Lord Jesus. Second, Jesus chooses the apostle for a specific mission. In today’s Gospel, this mission was confined to the lost sheep of Israel. Third, the power of the apostles’ testimony did not lie only in their ability to convince, but emanates from the power given to them by the Lord to cast out demons and to heal the people from every sickness and ailment. We can draw from the above three lessons for the shepherd and the parish, especially for those who really wish to participate in building the Kingdom of God: the Lord Jesus is the essence of our vocation and its roots, hence our teaching must emanate from His teaching and must be based on it, not on our own views. The Lord has chosen us for a specific mission. We have to cooperate with everyone to accomplish the mission of Jesus which can be accomplished by complementing our activities. Our strength does not come from our own power on earth, but from the spirit who resides in us. Let us put our lives in the hands of the Lord and give ourselves up to His will, like the holy Apostles, so His gifts flow in us. Yes Lord, we tell about your miracles, we proclaim your salvation to all people and we announce your word with all confidence and simplicity, on the likeness of your twelve Apostles, shouting at the top of our voices: “the Kingdom of Heaven has come near”.
