Thank you for attending the 2019 New Mexico Classical Guitar Festival. Your support is greatly appreciated! We are in the 10th year of the New Mexico Classical Guitar Festival. We are proud to have presented outstanding artists such as Scott Tennant, Roland Dyens, Marcin Dylla, Ben- jamin Verdery, Andrew York and many more at the festival over the past few years. Our event has its roots in the Summer Guitar Workshop which was lead by Pat Brothwell. She did an outstanding job with the workshop for many years. Early festivals featured such fine gui- tarists as Jonathan Leathwood, Masakazu Ito and Michael Chapdelaine. Guitar New Mexico has grown and is excited to present programs that reach many in our community: the Guitar New Mexico Youth Ensemble, Guitar Chamber Players, Artist in Residence program, GFA competi- tion winner concert, outreach performances in schools, libraries, senior care locations. We hope to reach young and old, amateur and professional, student and teacher through our many programs. I am honored to be a member of such a generous and supportive community. Without the assistance of such charitable donations, we could not have made the accomplish- ments we have sought to make. Many thanks to NM Arts, Music Guild of New Mexico, Kinder- Guitar New Mexico, Urban Enhancement Trust Fund, John and Diane Batty, Jay Hertz and Hel- en Grevey and many more for their generous donations and support of Guitar New Mexico. Finally, I would like to thank our outstanding board of directors. It is with their tireless efforts that we are able to achieve success for our mission. And I would like to welcome Martin Ly to our board. Martin first attended our festival as a college student. We are excited to have him share his many talents with Guitar New Mexico. Our mission is ” Fostering the appreciation of the classical guitar in Albuquerque and beyond”. Thank you for helping us on this path. We look forward to continue to provide outstanding pro- grams to our community. And please join us! If you are an adult guitarist, consider joining the Guitar Chamber Players. Student guitarists are welcome to be part of the Guitar New Mexico Youth Ensemble. Music educators should consider participating in our artist in residence pro- gram. Gitarre; It. chitarra; Sp. guitarra; Port.viola; Brazilian Port. violão). A string instrument of the lute family, plucked or strummed, and normally with frets along the fingerboard. It is difficult to define precisely what features distinguish guitars from other members of the lute family, because the name ‘guitar’ has been applied to instruments exhibiting a wide variation in morphology and performing practice. The modern classical guitar has six strings, a wooden resonating chamber with incurved sidewalls and a flat back. Although its earlier history includes periods of neglect as far as art music is concerned, it has always been an instrument of popular appeal, and has become an internationally established concert instrument endowed with an increasing repertory. In the Hornbostel and Sachs classification system the guitar is a ‘composite chordophone’ of the lute type (seeLUTE, §1, andCHORDOPHONE). 1. Structure of the modern guitar. Fig.1 shows the parts of the modern classical guitar. In instruments of the highest quality these have traditionally been made of carefully selected woods: the back and sidewalls of Brazilian rosewood, the neck cedar and the fingerboard ebony; the face or table, acoustically the most important part of the instrument, is of spruce, selected for its resilience, resonance and grain (closeness of grain is considered important, and a good table will have a grain count about 5 or 6 per cm). The table and back are each composed of two symmetrical sections, as is the total circumference of the sidewalls.

  • The Guitar Duo: Interaction and Group Creativity
The Guitar Duo: Interaction and Group Creativity by Adam Batstone A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts Department of Music University of Toronto © Copyright by Adam Batstone 2020 The Guitar Duo: Interaction and Group Creativity Adam Batstone Doctor of Musical Arts Department of Music University of Toronto 2020 Abstract The aim of this study was to examine the phenomenon of group creativity through the guitar duo, an ensemble which has received little scholarship in the field of music ensemble research. Specifically, this study revealed ways in which professional guitar duos manage non- verbal communication, and how they perceive moments of empathetic creativity during rehearsal and performance. A historical survey of the development of the guitar duo ensemble, along with literature review on specific issues of ensemble performance served as the backdrop for an observational study on the Henderson-Kolk guitar duo. Qualitative data was derived from video recordings of rehearsal and performance in order to examine rehearsal strategies that professional guitar duos utilize in order to promote group synergy and empathetic attunement during performance. A questionnaire was also forwarded to four members of other professional guitar duos which revealed insights into each individual’s own perception of the experience of empathetic attunement and how moments of empathetic creativity are cultivated. Results revealed an overall change in the main mode of communication between rehearsal to performance. Guitar duos utilize different rehearsal strategies to inspire or generate moments of creativity during performance, and the flow of empathetic communication is contingent on a duo’s capacity to listen and respond to each other’s musical intuitions in the moment.
