A Note from Kathy Dube, Administrator I was hoping by the time this edition of the newsletter was published I would have some idea of when we will be moving into the new building, but I don’t. The Building Authority is still waiting for some direction from both the state and federal government on an acceptable solution to the roof issue. There is a new architect on the project who has been given the task of getting in front of the decision making people in Lansing and/or Chicago. The next Building Authority meeting is scheduled for December 11th, at which time we hope to have good news.

In the meantime, The Maples had their annual inspection by the Bureau of Health Services, and we are proud to say we only had one very minor deficiency! Kudos to all our staff for their great work in taking care of our loved ones! ~Kathy P a g e 2 The Maples December 2015 Resident Reflections-Bob Dougherty

Robert Leroy Dougherty was born to Althea and Alexander Dougherty on January 8th, 1936 in Alpena, Michigan. Bob was one of four children and grew up with his brother and two sisters on a farm in Shelby, Michigan. They raised turkeys, which Bob had to help feed, and had a number of other animals, including a horse which Bob often got to ride. Bob fondly remem- bers that his sister would go down by the road to play and the turkeys on their farm would watch her play!

Bob went to Gardner Elementary School and then went on to Muskegon High School. When he was in elementary school, he enjoyed time outside during recess and he enjoyed playing some baseball in high school. He met his wife, Dorothy, in Ludington when they were both walking downtown and his friend introduced them. She told him later that she liked that he was dressed all in black the day they met. They got married in Ludington during the summer. Together, he and his wife had three sons. Later in life, after his wife passed away, Bob moved to Benzonia.

Farming continued to be part of Bob’s adult life. He worked for a potato farmer and would pick the potatoes up after the machine would dig them out of the ground. When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, horseback riding and traveling. He has good memories of visiting his brother in Arizona where they went fishing together. They had their favorite fishing spots and always hoped they would catch enough perch for dinner. He and his sister have kept in touch over the years and he was able to take a few trips to Chicago to visit her.

Bob enjoys the holiday season because he gets to eat one of his favorite meals— roast turkey. And, every holiday, he can chuckle as he remembers the turkeys on the family farm watching his sister play! Interview by Gina Dilas P a g e 3 The Maples December 2015 Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving gives us a chance to reflect on the good things in our lives, and for our residents those things include their families, friends, and their caregivers at The Maples. Thank you to all who brightened this Thanksgiving for our residents by preparing an excellent meal, sharing that extra time and encourage- ment, giving your time to make our residents feel valued. The Maples is grateful for the sup- port of our community and for the hard work our direct care staff does every day of the year. Page 4 The Maples December 2015 The Joy of Giving

The Maples staff recently held a Pancake Breakfast with all proceeds going to Benzie Home Health Care. The staff donated all the supplies and gave generously of their time on a Saturday morning. The folks who came enjoyed a hearty breakfast, there was an amazing team of workers, and we were able to raise $800 for our local seniors. Many thanks to all who were involved!

Lunch and Learn

On Friday, November 13, a Lunch and Learn was offered to the community to talk about the admission process, social services, therapy services, dementia, and an update on the new building. Fourteen people came for the lunch and asked many questions, then toured the new building. Presenters included Sylvia Bennett, Kathy Dube, Sharon Gilbert, Roddie Helsel, and Kathy Hughes. Thank you to all who helped!

The Maples Mission Statement

To provide accessible, high-quality long-term care; to meet the evolving health care needs of the residents of Benzie County. P a g e 5 T h e M apl es December 2015 Holiday Dessert Buffet

The Maples 2nd Annual Holiday Dessert Buffet was a great success with residents, family mem- bers, and staff gathered to enjoy a scrumptious display of desserts. There was fudge, apple pie squares, cranberry bars, brownies, layered bars, cupcakes, chocolate mousse, and smiles all around.

Holiday Craft Fair

The residents were as busy as elves making wreaths, flower baskets, picture frames, quilts, Christmas trees, decoupage, fabric flowers, and doing needlepoint as they prepared for our recent Arts and Crafts Fair. Many thanks to all who donated baked goods and other items to the sale and to everyone who purchased items. All proceeds go to the Resident Fund and your generosity is greatly appreciated. Page 6 The Maples December 2015 2015 CNA Skills Fair

You may have noticed the stars and stream- ers hanging in the entry hall in November along with a number of posters and display boards. Our CNAs have an annual skills fair where they are able to practice and review the skills needed for the day-to-day care of our residents. We want to thank the staff members who organized all of the displays, monitored the hands-on review, and checked all the paperwork. Kudos to our CNAs who did an awesome job with all aspects of the review and who continue to give excellent care to our residents. We appreciate you! Festival of Trees

The month of November found our residents busy making ornaments and decora- tions for the Festival of Trees display at the Benzie Area Historical Museum. The Maples tree was part of a silent auction held on November 28-29 with all proceeds going to Habitat for Humanity. Along with Christmas trees there were also wreaths, baskets and table decorations.
