VOLUME 29 ISSUE 7 2 President’s Corner By Tom Martin August 2014 – Hicks Airfield I hope everyone is having a great Summer, it seemed quiet with everyone on vacation or at Oshkosh. Mike Reddick has an article in this newsletter with pictures from Oshkosh of some of the Hicks aviators. Our new Stop Signs on the taxiways seem to be working…..for some…..thanks to those who are choosing to abide by the rules to make this a safe airport. We should continue to encourage everyone to drive the posted speed limits and stop at the intersections that may have blind spots. (Golf Carts included!!!) If it ever cools down we will continue with a few projects before the end of the year. Still have some taxiway crack sealing and clean up items around the airport. Thanks to everyone involved in the work projects and thanks to the owners for their cooperation. Carol Moran, our property manager for many years, has left PMG. Until a replacement is assigned please direct any questions you may have to Customer Service or Gary Klepperich at 682-325-5351. And as always………… THANKS to all the property owners who maintain their property, abide by the rules, and make this a great place to be. Hicks Airfield is really a great opportunity for us, and THANKS again to all the property owners who enjoy the Airfield, Runway, Café, and good friends and neighbors. Next board meeting is August 14th at the Beacon Café 7:00 PM. Remember this is your Airfield and your participation and voice needs to be heard at these meetings. Best Regards, Tom Martin President – Hicks Airfield Pilots Association VOLUME 29 ISSUE 7 3 Airventure 2014, Oshkosh, WI Two “firsts” occurred this year at Oshkosh. It was the first trip for your newsletter co-editors of Flappings and it was the first official appearance for Pilots N Paws. Making the decision to go at a late date in July we were still able to get decent lodging less than an hour drive from the big show! We arrived at Airventure on Sunday, July 27th, just in time to see the memorial flyover for EAA Founder Paul Poberezny. It gave me goose bumps when one of the escort P-51s pulled up and “headed west”. Getting there early turned out to be very wise as there were already thousands of planes on the ground and continuous arrivals taking place all day long. Starting in the home built camping area we found many friends already set up and ready to enjoy the sights all week. Our first sight- ing was Jay Pratt & Carol Beaird (see cover photo). After setting up the display booth for Pilots N Paws, we started taking in the sights. There were so many Hicks friends there. During the week we caught up with John Efinger and his son, Jim Usher, Daryl Heusinkveld, Don & Melana Browning, John Jones, Rich Rudolph, and Phil Wickersham. We also bumped into John Wilhite, Don Christianson & Tommy Lewis from Pecan Plantation. Rich Rudolph, John Jones, & Phil Wickersham The old saying really is true: “So much to see, so little time!” Around every corner was more things to take in. Being busy, as usual, we even caught Bob Avery working the crowd at the Avery Tools booth. The attendance was reported by EAA as over 500,000 visitors and over 8,000 aircraft. The volunteers were all kept very busy and our hats are off to those responsible for making things go so smooth. Bob Avery VOLUME 29 ISSUE 7 4 Airventure 2014, Oshkosh, WI, continued. At the end of Day 1 we were treated to a free concert by Kenny Loggins and his new band, the Blue Sky Riders. After a set of songs with his new band, Kenny came back to perform all the classics. He rocked on for over two hours belting out hits like Danger Zone from Top Gun, Celebrate Me Home, Danny’s Song, Return to the House At Pooh Corner and Footloose. The only thing missing was his long time partner, Jimmy Messina. Out of all the vendor exhibit areas, what are the chances that we would be located right across the aisle in Pavilion C from a Hicks neighbor, Stuart Davis, representing his Hicks based company, Auto PSRU’s. After deciding to make the journey to the big show, we found out that Pilots N Paws were looking for volunteers to help spread the word on how to make your next flight tax deductible while saving the lives of innocent animals. We were very successful in recruiting hundreds of new pilots that are eager to pitch in and help. Airventure makes you realize how small the aviation community really is. You can travel over 1,000 miles, in our case, and run into many Stuart Davis neighbors and friends not only from our own airport but from places we have visited in our aviation travels and dog rescue trips. One thing for sure, even after walking many, many miles to see all the planes and talk to their pilots, travelling by trams and by bus to the EAA Museum, Seaplane base, and ultra light area, we know we didn’t come close to “seeing it all”. Plans are going to be made soon for our next visit to the big show, Airventure 2015. Hope to see you there! Mike & Mary Reddick VOLUME 29 ISSUE 7 5 HICKS AIRFIELD PILOTS ASSOCIATION Minutes for Board Meeting- July 10, 2014 Meeting called to order 7:00pm by Tom Martin Absent board members: Mike Bruno & Gene DuBullet Comments from Tom- Remember the Summer Social BBQ dinner this Saturday at 6pm here at the airport. Finally the sealcoat, striping and new signage have been completed. The stop signs were added at the busier intersections where extra caution is warranted. The board feels the signage is added protection for all pilots who are sharing the taxiways with cars, bicycles and golf carts. Another break-in on the 3rd taxiway was foiled as the 3 guys were interrupted by the hangar occupant. Be sure all hangars are locked. Remotes for the gates for property owners are available from Tom Martin. New Business: June’s minutes and Aprils financials were approved by the BOD electronically and were published in July’s Flappings. Carol Moran- is leaving PMG on July 18, 14. HAPA President gave Carol a plaque. Larry Tehune-441 & 442 T-hangar owner received a letter from PMG and would like a waiver for all 4 evergreen trees and the 4 owners. The trees were planted in 1992. As long as the trees are not interfering or restricting aircraft let the trees be. Reb made a motion to accept his waiver re- quest as long as there is no interference with aircraft. Rusty 2nd motion passed. Jeff Sheets- 598 septic is plotted to go south, has pipes installed by Lonnie Van’s company that go north. Mr. Sheets would like the BOD to contact Don Davis and everyone involved. He wants to get this issue resolved. Roy stated the board cannot solve his problem, they can only assist him. He can only connect to the septic system that his lot was original permitted to. Discussion followed and tabled. Unfinished business- North end third taxiway still needs to have the drainage issue- the directing of the water flow, re- solved. Roy motioned to table issue Reb 2nd passed Taxiway flooding-June 25th rain was a rain that will happen every 50-100 years, more than 5 inches of rain in two hours.
