Weest nu gerust , gij ernstigen onder ons , die goede lees-stof zoekt en schroomt to kiezen onder den overmaat van waardeloos druksel, zoodat ge uit louter onzekerheid maar nets of nietigs leest, dit is een der groote boeken van onzen tijd die men lezen moot, en wel met voile aandacht , nauwgezet en methodisch. Toch is het geen leerboek , geen orakel, geen evangelie dat oordeel- loos mag worden nagepraat , geen voedsel voor de zwakken die zonder een stokstijf-verzwolgen dogma hun levenshouding niet kunnen bewaren , geen leuzen-magazijn voor dweepsche doctrinaires. Het zijn de diep-oprechte uitingen van een rijken , rijpen geest , die zich lenig bewogen heeft in alle gedachte-sferen, van een vurig maar door veel moeite en leed getemperd karakter , van een ervaren man die na veertig jaar zoekens tot vaste overtuigingen en sobere expressie kwam. Hij kan spreken over zichzelf , tot anderer leering, zonder dat men hem ijdelheid verwijten zal, hij kan zijn zwakheden en gebreken noemen zonder den schijn van aanstellerij. In den loop zijns levens wijzigden zijn meeningen zich , maar niet grillig en onberekenbaar, als gevolg van kortzichtigheid en opper- vlakkigheid , maar volgens een stadige groei , als uitkomst van steeds wijder opengaan voor licht en waarheid. De kunstkenner die tot zijn vijftigste jaar meende dat Titiaan het hoogste der schilderkunst had bereikt , leerde ten slotte nog de sobere grootheid van Giotto stellen boven den schitterenden. Venetiaan. De rijke Brit die eenmaal beweerde dat fraai-gebonden boeken en wel-verzorgd paarde-tuig tot het noodig goed van een deugdzaam mensch behoorden, werd de welsprekendste communist die Engeland gehad heeft. De hier verzamelde brieven van John Ruskin zijn geschreven zonder duidelijke methode , als opwellingen , meestal onsamenhangend , soms onnoodig wijdloopig , maar altijd leerrijk en belangrijk. De gedachten worden saamgehouden door een diepere eenheid , die alleen den doctrinair of den oppervlakkige ontgaan zal. En Ruskin deed recht, naar 't mij voorkomt, de moeielijkste vragen der economie aldus te behandelen. Daarmee toonde hij wijsgeerig dieper te schouwen dan de school-geleerden , die economie willen schoeien op den leest van mechanica of physica. Ruskin was een zeer geleerd en algemeen wetenschappelijk gevormd man, en in zijn speelsch en grillig schijnende rede is hij toch weten- schappelijker dan de zich wetenschappelijk noemende socialisten van Coen en nu. Want deze , in verrukking over hun methode vergeten den aard der behandelde grootheden , die meestal slecht bepaald en soms zelfs onbepaalbaar is , terwijl hij in zijn schitterend spel met woorden en termen , steeds de vluchtige en betrekkelijke aard dezer dingen onthoudt en de verwarring ontkomt waarin de pedanten gevangen raken , en de tweezijdige scherpten vermijdt waarmee zij zich in de vingers snijden. In tijd en land als die van ons , nu uit het krijgs-tucht en geestes- dwang beter verdragende Duitschland, een leerstellig socialisme zich tamelijk barsch en bazig als het eenig deugdelijke en bij uit- nemendheid wetenschappelijke aan ons op komt dringen, is de lectuur van dit boek meer dan ooit of ergens nuttig. Het zal menigen Nederlander die het socialisme alleen uit den strijd van dagbladen en tijdschriften kent, verbazen hier te bemerken dat socialisme en communisme niet noodzakelijk hoeft samen te gaan met vulgariteit, met grofheid en persoonlijkheid, met bekrompen materialisme , met hatelijke heftigheid, met hol geschetter, met bazige aanmatiging. Ruskin's ironic is snijdend en bitter , maar altijd van edele soort , zijn hartstocht breekt nooit de breidels van 't verstand en goeden smaak , zijn communisme wil nets missen van al het mooie zijner diep ingegroeide aristocratic. Evenals hij alle dagen tot „holidays" heilige dagen maken wil , zoo wil hij alle menschen edel-lieden hebben in den besten zin. Ruskin is royalist, den koningen wil hij de kroon op 't hoofd laten , even als den bisschoppen den staf in de hand , mits ze die met eere dragen. Hierbij is stellig zijn kunstenaars-natuur in 't sp el, gehecht aan den zinnelijken , uiterlijken weidschen praal , „the pageant" zooals 't Engelsche woord luidt. Misschien ook was 't de invloed van 't Saint-simonisme met zijn hierarchische begrippen. Tot de mijns inziens hoogere conceptie van een samenleving van gelijk-berechtigden waarbij geen individu wordt opgeofferd door de huldiging tot wereldsch symbool eener goddelijke eenheid, is Ruskin niet gekomen.. Toch had hij die kunnen leeren, was 't niet van der Hebree6n profeet Samuel , dan van de negentiende eeuwsche Amerikanen Thoreau en Walt Whitman. Evenmin verstond hij wat Kropotkin de poezie der machine noemt. Verdrietig door het ontzuiveren van Engelands heldere sfeer door steenkool-damp , geen heil ziend in de door arbeids- besparing bevorderde gemakzucht, achtte Ruskin alle machinerie uit den booze , niet vertrouwend dat der menschen vernuft wel eenmaal machines zal leeren maken die niet enkel bewonderenswaard zijn door vernuft maar ook schadeloos en schoon , zoodra zij niet meer gemaakt worden uit persoonlijke baatzucht maar uit gemeen- schappelijk belang, — en niet verwachtend dat men eenmaal alge- meen zal leeren vrijen tijd wel te besteden. Zoo achten velen onzer nog: geld, fabrieken en handel heelemaal verwerpelijk, niet begrijpend dat het bedorven en vervuilde vormen zijn van onschadelijke of nuttige zaken. Ruskin's kolonisatie-plan , de St. George's Company is niet geslaagd , hoewel er nog een tamelijk voorspoedige Ruskin-kolonie in Tennessee bestaat. In Engeland wordt Ruskin's naam thans meer aan stich- tingen voor opvoeding en onderwijs verbonden , soms wel zeer te onpas. Zelf kunstenaar en leeraar, , ging zijn aandacht bij het bedenken eener beter sociale ordening voorbarig naar de kwesties van onder- wijs en kunst. Zeer goede en nuttige zaken, maar niet vereischend de allereerste zorg. Zal men een pasgeboren kind kunst-geschiedenis doceeren ? Men dient eerst of te wachten of het zuigen wil , om vervolgens te letten op zindelijkheid, op spreken en staan. Een nieuwe vorm van maatschappelijke orde te midden van de oude is als een nieuwe diersoort opgroeiend tusschen de bestaande. De eerste vraag is de bestaansvraag. Voorbarigheid heeft altijd ondergang gebracht. In ooze kindschheid is het stoffelijk leven alles , de voedsel-kwestie overheerscht alle andere. Later , als het plaatsje in 't leven veroverd is en het stoffelijk bestaan verzekerd, dan komen de hoogere en gewichtiger belangen aan de orde. Zoo is 't ook met de kolonies in hun kindschheid. En zoolang men zulke pasgeborenen wil leeren schilderijen-maken eer ze staan kunnen , zullen ze den weg op gaan van Fourier's Phalansteres en Owen's New Harmonies. Toch is het plan der St. George's Company een meesterlijk ontwerp en een glansrijke fictie , als een bonte , zwierige bather. Niet enkel heeft het groote waarde als moreel document, als standaard van hooge zedelijkheid, maar het bevat practische voorslagen van groot gewicht, met name deze , die mijns inziens zal blijken alle verdere kolonisatie-proeven to beheerschen , dat van de gemaakte winst geen persoonlijke uitkeeringen zullen geschieden. Moge dus dit boek gelezen worden met onderscheidend oordeel maar met ruimte en ontvankelijkheid, zelfstandig maar nooit zonder eerbiedige aandacht. Het moeielijk werk der vertaling schijnt mij zeer goed geslaagd. Walden , Februari 1901. FREDERIK VAN EEDEN. Zooals men bemerken zal zijn hier niet al de brieven uit „Fors Clavigera," zooals die in het jaar 1896 bij George Allen in vier deelen verschenen, vertaald. Slechts wat 'inij het belangrijkst voorkwam heb ik uitgezocht, maar tevens zooveel mogelijk zorg gedragen dat weer een afgerond geheel tot stand kwam. Daar op eenheid en verband moest gelet worden zijn enkele zeer mooie brieven niet opgenomen kunnen worden. Meestal is door stippellijnen aangegeven waar stukken uit het origineel zijn weggelaten, maar niet overal is dit goed mogelijk geweest. Chapter 8 The Importance of Fors Clavigera (1871 - 1884): The Convergence of Ruskins Social and Educational Thought Within a year of his appointment to Oxford as Professor of Fine Art, Ruskin began writing Fors Clavigera, a series of letters to the working men of England. The letters span the same period as the years of the professorship at Oxford and the letters were written as Ruskin explained "as a byework to quiet my conscience, that I might be happy in ... my own proper life of Art -, teaching at Oxford and elsewhere, and through my own happiness rightly help others". 1 The "byework" lasted for fourteen years, ending when Ruskin was sixty-five years old. Ruskin published the first eighty- seven letters at monthly intervals commencing in January, 1871 and terminating in March, 1878 with his breakdown in health. Nine more letters appeared at irregular intervals between 1880 and 1884. The last letter was written on the eve of Ruskins final resignation from the Slade Professorship. The letters were subsequently published in volume form and an abridged version also ties Fors Clavigera is the most extraordinary work in English literature. This is a bold claim, particularly so when Tristram Shandy or Ulysses are remembered. Yet there is no other work quite like Ruskins strange, often demented letters addressed to the working men of England. There is a temptation, which same critics seem unable to resist, 2 to see the 650,000 word deluge of Fors Clavigera as Ruskins masterpiece in the same way that the tables have been turned to claim that Wordsworths late poetry is greater than Lyrical Ballads or that Shakespeares "romances" of his final period eclipse his tragedies.

ROSE ADVISOR: PROFESSOR JOSEPH BRISTOW LOS ANGELES, CA MARCH 21, 2014 Rose ii ABSTRACT JOHN RUSKIN’S FORS CLAVIGERA: THE HERO AS EDUCATOR 1871 marked a turning point in John Ruskin’s career. At that point in his career, he had become an established intellectual authority with his appointment at Oxford, Ruskin Sr. had passed away and left him both a fortune and free reign over his intellectual pursuits, and he had taken over his own publishing methods. These momentous changes helped Ruskin turn to more closely examine questions of readership and what he saw as those readers’ needs: educational reading practices in particular and better education in general. My honors thesis seeks to examine the major project John Ruskin embarked on to ameliorate the needs of his readers: Fors Clavigera: Letters to the Workmen and Labourers of Great Britain (1871-84). This project examines how Ruskin came to write Fors: the material and biographical circumstances surrounding its production, Ruskin’s authority at the time, and the implied audience he was writing for. Here I explore the letters and investigate their form, the assumptions they make regarding reading, and the confusion respecting whether their implied audience matched up with the actual one Ruskin had. The works of what scholars call the “late Ruskin” (1870-1900) are daunting because of the phenomenal quantity and the experimental nature of much of that work.

ABSTRACT Though John Ruskin (1819 – 1900) is remembered principally for his work as a theorist, art critic, and historian of visual culture, he wrote exhaustively about his health in his correspondence and diaries. Ruskin was prone to recurring depressive and hypochondriacal feelings in his youth and adulthood. In 1871, at the age of 52, he developed an illness with relapsing psychiatric and neurological features. He had a series of attacks of brain disturbance, and a deterioration of his mental faculties affected his writing for years before curtailing his career a decade before he died. Previous writers have suggested he had a psychiatric malady, perhaps schizophrenia or schizo- affective disorder. But the more obvious conclusion from a close medical reading of Ruskin’s descriptions of his illness is he had some sort of ‘organic’ brain illness. This paper aims to give insight into the relationship between Ruskin’s state of wellbeing and the features of his writing through a palaeographical study of his letters and diary entries. We examine the handwriting for physical traces of Ruskin’s major brain illness, guided by the historical narrative of the illness.

    1 THE PEACOCK AND THE PRODIGY Whistler's Celebrated Lawsuit Against Ruskin Turned on Money and Madness by Lincoln Caplan, Civilization, Jan/Feb, 1995 In London, in November of 1878, the case of James McNeill Whistler v. John Ruskin opened in the Old Royal Courts of Justice. The artist was suing the critic for libel. Whistler had been invited to exhibit eight pictures the year before at the city's Grosvenor Gallery, including Nocturne in Black and Gold (it was later subtitled The Falling Rocket). The oil painting evoked fireworks over a riverside at night. Whistler was trying to sell the picture for 200 guineas (a guinea was worth 5 percent more than a pound). Ruskin despised the nocturne. In a monthly journal he edited, cryptically called Fors Clavigera ("club- wielding force"), Ruskin declared, "For Mr. Whistler's own sake, no less than for the protection of the purchaser, Sir Courts Lindsay [the gallery's proprietor] ought not to have admitted works into the gallery in which the ill-educated conceit of the artist so nearly approached the aspect of willful imposture. I have seen, and heard, much of Cockney impudence before now; but never expected to hear a coxcomb ask two hundred guineas for flinging a pot of paint in the public's face." Whistler, c. 1888 Whistler, picking up the glove, launched what one scholar calls "the most celebrated lawsuit in the history of art."     10/1/2019 John Ruskin - Wikipedia John Ruskin John Ruskin (8 February 1819 – 20 January 1900) was the leading John Ruskin English art critic of the Victorian era, as well as an art patron, draughtsman, watercolourist, a prominent social thinker and philanthropist. He wrote on subjects as varied as geology, architecture, myth, ornithology, literature, education, botany and political economy. His writing styles and literary forms were equally varied. He penned essays and treatises, poetry and lectures, travel guides and manuals, letters and even a fairy tale. He also made detailed sketches and paintings of rocks, plants, birds, landscapes, and architectural structures and ornamentation. The elaborate style that characterised his earliest writing on art gave way in time to plainer language designed to communicate his ideas more effectively. In all of his writing, he emphasised the connections between nature, art and society. He was hugely influential in the latter half of the 19th century and up to the First World War. After a period of relative decline, his reputation has steadily improved since the 1960s with the publication of numerous Ruskin in 1863 academic studies of his work.
