Unionism and Loyalism Gordon Gillespie 26 June 2018 Unionism: Historical Viewpoint Defines itself in opposition to Irish nationalism. Rejects the idea of a historic Irish nation. Ireland only became a nation after the Act of Union in 1800 (ie within the UK). The 26 counties of the Free State/Irish Republic seceded from the United Kingdom – the six counties of NI did not withdraw from an Irish state. After partition in 1921 the Irish government encouraged political instability in NI by continuing the territorial claim to NI in the Irish constitution (removed in 1999). Academic Definitions Jennifer Todd: Ulster Loyalist – primary loyalty to the NI Protestant community. Ulster British – primary loyalty to the British state/nation. In practice there is an overlap between the two. John McGarry and Brendan O’Leary: Devolutionists – a NI assembly provides best defence against Irish nationalism because British government is unreliable. Integrationists – Union best maintained by legal, political, electoral and administrative integration with the rest of the UK. Norman Porter: Cultural Unionism – rooted in Protestantism. The concepts of liberty and loyalty are central. Liberal Unionism – aims to achieve a similar political way of life as the rest of the UK Unionist and Loyalist Organisations Organisations reflect social and economic divisions in the PUL community. Complicated by emergence of organisations in response to the Troubles or to specific political initiatives. Churches: Presbyterian, Church of Ireland, Methodist, Baptist, etc. Political parties: Ulster Unionist Party, Democratic Unionist Party, Vanguard, etc. Loyal Orders: Orange Order, Apprentice Boys of Derry, Royal Black Preceptory. Paramilitary Organisations: Ulster Volunteer Force, Ulster Defence Association and associated organisations. -

Condemned to Rootlessness: The Loyalist Origins of Canada's Identity Crisis Introduction In the view of the English-speaking Canadian media, Canada has an identity crisis, a situation attributable to divisions within the Canadian body politic that are regularly expressed in constitutional bickering between Quebec and the Rest of Canada and between the provinces and the federal government.1 Yet the identity crisis in the lifeworld of the average English-Canadian appears to possess a somewhat different quality. The following statement from Rod Lamirand, a resident of Surrey, B.C., expresses the subjectivity of this existential unease with remarkable accuracy: 'We [our family] were isolated, self-sufficient, cut off from a close community and from our pasts...Our family was not drawn into a neighborhood of friends because of a shared difference from mainstream society. We didn't have a name for the cultural majority because for the most part they were us. We were part of the dominant cultural society and we had no real culture. The great wash of pale European blood that saturated this continent was uniform in color only. Much of what survived is a hodgepodge of eclectic, meaningless routines...We were the product of white bread and instant coffee, Hollywood and the CBC....'2 (emphasis added) The connection between the Canadian identity crisis mentioned in the English-Canadian media and Lamirand's statement might appear distant. Surely, one might ask, the latter reflects a problem that should be labeled 'English-Canadian' rather than 'Canadian.' It is the position of this paper, however, that the discourses of English-Canadian and Canadian identity are inextricably bound. -

!1 M. J. Grant [email protected] ‘That’s what it’s all about’? Football songs, religious hatred, and the strange case of The Hokey Cokey Author’s note on the text below: Herein lies a tale. The article presented here was originally submitted to an academic human rights journal, and was sent back to me for only minor revisions after peer review. After these revisions were done, however, the editors of the journal asked me to make clearer the practical implications of my conclusions. This led to me redrafting the last section of the article, to include the numbered points on what lessons could be learned and what measures could be adopted in light of the points raised. One of these points focuses on the necessity of human rights education and training, specifically with reference to the right to freedom of expression, and necessary restrictions of that right . The editors accepted most of these points but felt that, here, I should have stressed how the songs cited can be used to demonstrate what is and what is not “hate speech”. Since I felt that this actually contradicted my argumentation as a whole, and if it was to be dealt with properly would open up a whole new can of worms, I cut the relevant point in its entirety – I was already far over the word limit, and by this stage the review and revision process had taken the best part of a year. The editors deemed this latest version almost ready for publication, but requested that I include a new paragraph in the conclusion. -

The rise of the FPU ushered in a new era of class politics. But fishermen were divided in their support for the union; Irish-Catholic fishermen have long been seen as at the periphery—or entirely outside—of the FPU’s fold. Appeals to ethno- religious unity among Irish Catholics contributed to their ambivalence about or opposition to the union. Yet, many Irish Catholics chose to support the FPU. In fact, the historical record shows Irish Catholics demonstrating a range of attitudes towards the union: some joined and remained, some joined and then left, and others rejected the union altogether. -

Irish responses to Fascist Italy, 1919–1932 by Mark Phelan A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Supervisor: Prof. Gearóid Ó Tuathaigh Department of History School of Humanities National University of Ireland, Galway December 2012 ABSTRACT This project assesses the impact of the first fascist power, its ethos and propaganda, on key constituencies of opinion in the Irish Free State. Accordingly, it explores the attitudes, views and concerns expressed by members of religious organisations; prominent journalists and academics; government officials/supporters and other members of the political class in Ireland, including republican and labour activists. By contextualising the Irish response to Fascist Italy within the wider patterns of cultural, political and ecclesiastical life in the Free State, the project provides original insights into the configuration of ideology and social forces in post-independence Ireland. Structurally, the thesis begins with a two-chapter account of conflicting confessional responses to Italian Fascism, followed by an analysis of diplomatic intercourse between Ireland and Italy. Next, the thesis examines some controversial policies pursued by Cumann na nGaedheal, and assesses their links to similar Fascist initiatives. The penultimate chapter focuses upon the remarkably ambiguous attitude to Mussolini’s Italy demonstrated by early Fianna Fáil, whilst the final section recounts the intensely hostile response of the Irish labour movement, both to the Italian regime, and indeed to Mussolini’s Irish apologists. -

By examining the history of the extension of suffrage to women and women's political participation in Chile since the mid-nineteenth century, this paper challenges that widely held notion. It shows that Catholic and Conservative leaders were the earliest voices in favor of extending suffrage to women. It also shows that Catholic women were involved in political and social affairs from an early date in the country's history as an independent nation, and that they developed feminist views. -

Jozef looked at him, doubtful, on the doorstep; at his red hair and freck- les, and the way he squinted in the summer light, the June sun already up above the rooftops. ‘You got me out of bed.’ The church clock opposite said ten past six, so he must be just off the London bus; no hanging about, he looked like he’d come straight down to the South Side on foot. The boy gave a nod, a shrug: ‘Romek tellt me tae come straight here. He said you’d pay me.’ And Jozef had agreed to do that, it was true. So he stood to one side to let him in. — 1 Walk Home 02/01/2014 11:59 Page 2 Romek had told him the boy was nineteen, but he didn’t look it: too slight across the shoulders. His red head was cut close, and the back of his skinny neck too pale, blue-pale above his T-shirt. Jozef watched him as he showed him around the big house: the stripped-bare rooms, and up and down the wide stairs. All the work still to be completed. The boy walked ahead of him through the empty top floor that commanded the best views, over the park in full leaf, and all the other sandstone villas.
