The West Wing Weekly 1:19: Let Bartlet Be Bartlet Guest: Under Secretary of the Army, Patrick Murphy [Intro Music] JOSH: Well hello. You’re listening to The West Wing Weekly. I’m Joshua Malina. HRISHI: And I’m Hrishikesh Hirway. Today we’re talking about season one, episode nineteen of The West Wing : “ Let Bartlet Be Bartlet ”. And coming up later, the United States Under Secretary of the Army, the honorable Patrick Murphy, is going to be joining us to talk about this episode. JOSH: It first aired on April 26th, 2000. The story is by Peter Parnell and Patrick Caddell, which rhymes and that’s cute. The teleplay is by Aaron Sorkin and the episode was directed by Laura Innes, whom you know as an actor from her work as Kerry Weaver in 249 episodes of ‘ER’ and all sorts of other things. HRISHI: Part of the John Wells family then. JOSH: That is true. I have a ‘Laura Innes Directs’ anecdote- HRISHI: From a later episode. JOSH: Yes. It’s not a spoiler of any kind, except that I’ll probably tell the story again two years from now when we get to it. HRISHI: Sure, let’s hear it. JOSH: ok. So she directed an episode that I acted in, seasons after this one, and she’s a very serious director and I’m a not very serious actor and so Laura came up to me to discuss a scene we were about to shoot and she had really thought it through, all the different beats and psychologically where the characters were at, and she kind of talked me through it and said “This is my take and I think what you’re thinking here is this and that sort of reflects on - remember what happened last season - and I think what you’re trying to accomplish here...” and this and that and she kinda gave a five minute spiel and then I said “So..

CONVENIENT FICTIONS: THE SCRIPT OF LESBIAN DESIRE IN THE POST-ELLEN ERA. A NEW ZEALAND PERSPECTIVE By Alison Julie Hopkins A thesis submitted to Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Victoria University of Wellington 2009 Acknowledgements I would like to acknowledge those people who have supported me in my endeavour to complete this thesis. In particular, I would like to thank Dr Alison Laurie and Dr Lesley Hall, for their guidance and expertise, and Dr Tony Schirato for his insights, all of which were instrumental in the completion of my study. I would also like to express my gratitude to all of those people who participated in the research, in particular Mark Pope, facilitator of the ‘School’s Out’ programme, the staff at LAGANZ, and the staff at the photographic archive of The Alexander Turnbull Library. I would also like to acknowledge the support of The Chief Censor, Bill Hastings, and The Office of Film and Literature Classification, throughout this study. Finally, I would like to thank my most ardent supporters, Virginia, Darcy, and Mo. ii Abstract Little has been published about the ascending trajectory of lesbian characters in prime-time television texts. Rarer still are analyses of lesbian fictions on New Zealand television. This study offers a robust and critical interrogation of Sapphic expression found in the New Zealand television landscape. More specifically, this thesis analyses fictional lesbian representation found in New Zealand’s prime-time, free-to-air television environment. It argues that television’s script of lesbian desire is more about illusion than inclusion, and that lesbian representation is a misnomer, both qualitatively and quantitively.

  • The Confusion of Conditions a Sociological Look at the Television Series E.R.*
The Confusion of Conditions A Sociological Look at the Television Series E.R.* By Sabine Chalvon-Demersay Translated from the French by Teresa Lavender Fagan E.R. is an American television series that portrays the daily activities of a medical team in the emergency room of a hospital located in Chicago. The pilot episode was broadcast on NBC in September 1994. The series was bought by France 2, which aired the first episodes in July 1996, and has presented a new season every fall. Michael Crichton created E.R. He wrote the pilot episode, which was produced by John Wells and directed by Rod Holcomb; he continues to supervise the writing of subsequent episodes which are directed by different people. A graduate of Harvard, the author of 22 best-selling books, he has a medical degree, but has never practiced medicine. It was during medical school that Crichton thought of the original screenplay for E.R., which was produced twenty years later. He needed the authority that was granted to him by the success of his books and his film scripts (notably Disclosure, Jurassic Park, Congo, Rising Sun), as well as the support of Steven Spielberg, in order to be in a position to propose an original screenplay that in many respects went against much of what people expected in a television series, and concerning which he was not willing to make any concessions. The Research What is most striking when one questions viewers of the series is their sense of a true powerful relationship that is immediately established between the series and its audience and which develops throughout the seasons: violent rejection, strong enthusiasm, disgust, expectation, impatience, frustration, irritation, habit, weariness, (relief).

  • Spectacle, Performance, and the Re-Presentation of Disability and Impairment Alison Wilde, Ph.D. University College Dublin, Ireland
Spectacle, Performance, and the Re-Presentation of Disability and Impairment Alison Wilde, Ph.D. University College Dublin, Ireland Abstract: This article proposes the value of investigating audience interpretations as viewing performances to interrogate disabling discourses on popular television. In synthesising media and disability studies approaches, performances of identities are investigated, contextualizing the media as a crucial factor in forms of cultural identification, contributing to patterns of exclusion and inclusion. Key Words: audience, performance, television narratives, exclusion This paper arises out of three primary concerns. First, I have a long-standing interest in people’s attitudes toward disability and the relationships between cultural representations and attitudes. Secondly, my work in media studies has stimulated my interests in ideas of the “active audience” and the dynamics of meaning-making. Finally my work in cultural studies led me to become dissatisfied with readings of disability within cultural studies texts, and their limited nature. These cultural and media studies readings are invariably based on individualistic or medical models of disability (Oliver, 1990; Barnes, Mercer, & Shakespeare 1999) where individual deviations from ascribed bodily norms are framed as “abnormal” against non-disabled forms of “normality.” The individualistic, non-disabled centred assumptions, which pervade conventional media studies work on disability, limited as they are, tend to have insidious effects outside disability

TV Doctors Fieldwork Dates: 12th - 13th March 2019 Conducted by YouGov On behalf of YouGov Omnibus © YouGov plc 2019 BACKGROUND This spreadsheet contains survey data collected and analysed by YouGov plc. No information contained within this spreadsheet may be published without the consent of YouGov Plc and the client named on the front cover. Methodology: This survey has been conducted using an online interview administered to members of the YouGov Plc panel of 1.2 million individuals who have agreed to take part in surveys. Emails are sent to panellists selected at random from the base sample. The e-mail invites them to take part in a survey and provides a generic survey link. Once a panel member clicks on the link they are sent to the survey that they are most required for, according to the sample definition and quotas. (The sample definition could be "US adult population" or a subset such as "US adult females"). Invitations to surveys don’t expire and respondents can be sent to any available survey. The responding sample is weighted to the profile of the sample definition to provide a representative reporting sample. The profile is normally derived from census data or, if not available from the census, from industry accepted data. YouGov plc make every effort to provide representative information. All results are based on a sample and are therefore subject to statistical errors normally associated with sample-based information. For further information about the results in this spreadsheet, please contact YouGov Plc +1 888.729.0773 or email [email protected] quoting the survey details EDITOR'S NOTES - all press releases should contain the followinG information All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc.

Under the drone of inane music, the video [http://www.you tube.com/watch?v=-4CV05HyAbM] presents a pre-computer information flow — typing on a piece of paper, carrying the typed page to a file cabinet, entering a library with bookshelves, thumbing through a typed card catalog, correcting errors by overtyping. (This must also be the pre-Witeout era.) The video finds a file cabinet with microform cards and selects a 1995 issue of Newsweek. Displayed on a microform reader, the article predicts, “Why cyberspace isn’t, and will never be, nirvana.” The camera again lingers over the first typed document, almost illegible in its original state. But nirvana does arrive. We can tell because the music changes as the video displays word processing on a computer screen. It stays there a few moments before jumping into the web, all the while entering words and phrases, deleting and re-entering. With about 60 examples in 4 minutes, Wesch seems to marvel at the slightest digital editing technique. www.infotoday.com/searcher February 2009 33 BEYOND FINDABILITY appyDevil Comics’ response to the Wesch video, Brad and HPhil’s Information R/evolution, picks up the library theme [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWmERReCRvg].
