Dr. John Walker: Chemistry, Mineralogy and Geology in Enlightenment Edinburgh (1740-1800) Matthew Daniel Eddy Doctor of Philosophy Department of Philosophy 2003 Abstract Rev. Dr. John Walker (1731-1803) held the Regius Chair of Natural History in the University of Edinburgh's Medical School from 1779 until 1803. As a student of William Cullen, advisor to Lord Kames and friend of Joseph Black, he went on to teach well over seven hundred students and was a founding member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. This study uses his career to trace the course of the nascent earth sciences within the Medical School's local reality. It is based on the publications of Walker and his colleagues, and on the vast archive of his personal manuscripts, correspondence and lecture notes housed in the University of Edinburgh's Special Collections. After Chapter I's biographical introduction, Chapters 2 and 3 concentrate on his early chemical education and show that a principle-based form of experimental pharmacology laid the epistemological and methodological foundation for Edinburgh's interest in mineralogy. This is done by examining the Medical School's 1750s chemistry course in relation to Walker's early publications and then by detailing his mid-career tours and attempts at mineralogical taxonomy. Moving on to his time as Professor of Natural History, Chapters 4 and 5 excavate his 'fossil' sources and vocabulary and detail his 1797 mineralogical system. The final chapter gives an account of his geology lectures and how they were directly affected by his conception of chemistry and mineralogy; special attention is given to geological methodology, time, extraneous fossils and testimony taken from classical works. The conclusion proceeds to illustrate how histories interested in the 'forerurmers' of the chemical revolution and/or the evolutionary paradigm ignore the large number of chemically trained industrialists and medical professionals who contributed to Enlightenment concepts of the earth's form and structure. This transition has been punctuated by the protestant reformation of the 16th century, conflicts over religion and power structure, including regicide in the 17th century, the Industrial and Agricultural revolutions of the 18th and early 19th century and a series of major wars. Although land battles have not taken place on British soil since the 18th century, setting aside terrorism, civilians have become increasingly involved in these wars. The period has also seen the development of capitalism, with Britain leading the Industrial Revolution and becoming a major trading nation. Trade was followed by colonisation and by the second half of the 19th century the British Empire included vast areas across the world, despite the independence of the United States in 1783. The second half of the 20th century saw the end of imperialism. London became a centre of global importance as a result of trade and empire, but has maintained its status as a financial centre. The Solent Thames region generally is prosperous, benefiting from relative proximity to London and good communications routes. The Isle of Wight has its own particular issues, but has never been completely isolated from major events.

Dr. Katz’s course used his new book EXPERIMENTATION WITH HUMAN BEINGS (New York: Russell Sage Foundation 1972). On pages 526-527, there are excerpts from Slater v. Baker. I sought out and read Slater v. Baker. It seemed that there must be an interesting backstory to the case, but it was not accessible at that time. I then practiced health law for nearly forty years, representing hospitals and doctors, and writing six editions of a textbook on hospital law. I applied my interest in experimentation with human beings by serving on various Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) during that period. IRBs are federally required committees that review and approve experiments with humans at hospitals, universities and other institutions.

Concurrently, nature’s beauty is univocal and independent of subjective judgement. In this paper I will argue that, although Leibniz’s view coincides with this formula, his philosophy offers an explanation for subjective dissent in aesthetic judgements about nature. I will show that the acceptance of divergences on aesthetic value are the result of a conception of harmony that includes qualitative variety and dissonance. I. INTRODUCTION Leibniz’s aesthetics fall within the Pythagorean tradition in so far as he agrees that the beauty of the universe is an objective value grounded on the harmony of the cosmos. In this view, harmony is a property of systems, defined as unity in variety, which is univocal and indifferent to subjective judgement. In this paper I argue that, despite Leibniz’s complete adherence to this formula, his interpretation explains and justifies the subjective dissent in aesthetic judgements. I show that the possibility of valid divergences regarding the aesthetic value of nature is the result of a Leibnizian conception of the universe’s harmony, which includes qualitative variety and dissonance. The secondary objective of this paper is to present some aspects of the underrepresented views of Leibniz on beauty and aesthetics in general. Even though aesthetics as a discipline was baptized by a Leibnizian philosopher – namely, Alexander Baumgarten –, few papers and book chapters explain Leibniz’s own views on the topic.

This article is published with open access at Springerlink.com Abstract Since 2003, the Botanical Garden in Oslo has been involved in a project coordinated by the Norwegian Genetic Resource Centre. The wide range of work super- vised by this centre includes conservation of ornamental plants. Our garden has been responsible for the registration and collecting of ornamentals in Southeast-Norway and has a special responsibility for the conservation of Paeonia species and cultivars. As a result of the project, Great-granny’s Garden was opened to the public in 2008. It has two objectives. Firstly, it shall be a living archive of Norway’s horticultural heritage. Although proven hardy, easy to grow, and long-lived, old varieties of traditional ornamentals are rapidly disappearing. We aim to keep these old-fashioned varieties for sustainable use in future horticulture and encourage people to use them in present day gardening, both in new gardens and in the restoration of old ones. Secondly, the garden is designed as a sensory garden for people with dementia, in cooperation with Oslo’s Resource Centre for Dementia and Psychiatric Care of the Elderly. It is enclosed by a picked fence and by shrubs, offers rest on several benches, and has a paved and easy to follow round-walk among traditional garden elements and plants with a lush variety of colours, forms, and scents.
