A That has been the case since 1998, when accidents yielded the regret- table fourth place to deaths caused by influenza and pneumonia. Even so, acci- dents remain the leading cause of death for children and youth between one to 19 years of age. Accidents of all kinds — including falls, industrial and road fatalities, drowning, fires, asphyxiation, electrocution and a sad array of other mishaps — took 4,820 lives per year as an average in Cuba during the period from 2009 to 2013. The overall number of fatalities due to accidents peaked in 1995 with 5,820, to gradually descend to 4,169 in 2006. Since then, this sad statistics is on the rise again with a frightening 3% annual pace of growth — although apparently not due to road crashes. Road accidents take one out of every

five lives lost to accidents in Cuba. Ac- cording to official statistics, the overall number of traffic deaths averaged 952 for the past five years, a sharp decrease from more than 2,680 road fatalities in 1990, the peak reading, when a record 25.2 deaths on the road per 100,000 people were reported for a population of 10.67 million inhabitants. And, despite frequent and prominent coverage of road accidents with multiple deaths in official media, road fatalities continue to de- cline, according to the Ministry of Health (MINSAP). Surely not by coincidence, the good trend started with the onset of the Spe- cial Period in Cuba and therefore could be credited to the overall slowdown of the economy, especially to the collapse of road transportation of passengers and cargo. For example, sugar output, the backbone of the economy 25 years ago, shrank by two-thirds after 1990 in only five years, thus reducing the massive transpor- tation of sugarcane See Road accidents, next page October 2014 v CubaNews 9 TV COMMERCIALS —FROM PAGE 7 receive any support from ICAIC on this matter — it is not necessary.
