  • Holst in an Unusual Circle (PDF)
Holst in an unusual circle Tom Clarke, © 2014 For a man with socialist sympathies, and famed for his simple and modest life, it is ironic that Gustav Holst once gained support from Rolls-Royce, the very epitome of luxury and exclusiveness. But there was a human side to this story that probably accounts for Holst moving within this circle for a few years. His contact with Rolls-Royce involved someone like himself who preferred to keep out of the limelight. The Commercial Managing Director of Rolls-Royce Ltd. from 1906, and soon its full managing director, was Claude Goodman Johnson (1864-1926), a man of liberal outlook. He was one of seven children, born to a religious father who worked first in the glove trade and then at the South Kensington Museum, teaching himself much about art for self improvement. He instilled a love of church music and Bach into his children. Of Claude’s brothers, Cyril Leslie became a composer, Douglas a Canon of Manchester cathedral, and Basil succeeded him briefly at Rolls- Royce Ltd. Although not artistic Claude had a deep feeling for art and music. Claude Johnson was undoubtedly the business force which made Rolls-Royce preeminent in the Edwardian period and beyond. His organisational skills were phenomenal. As soon as he had Rolls-Royce on a sound footing he began to seek out artists who could enhance the Rolls-Royce image. He used the great sculptor and typographer Eric Gill in 1906 to design the company’s font. The sculptor Charles Robinson Sykes was invited to design the company’s famous car mascot, the Spirit of Ecstasy, in 1910.

  • Wilbur & Orville Wright
Wilbur & OrvilleWright Pictorial Materials Preface This guide is the fifth commemorative tribute to the Wright brothers prepared by the Library of Congress since 1949, when the Wright papers were given to the Library by the Orville Wright estate, and is one of two publications originating in con nection with the seventy-fifth anniversary of powered flight. Its companion, entitled Photographs by the Wright Brothers: Prints from the Glass Negatives in the Library of Congress (Washing ton: Library of Congress, 1978), includes all hut two of 303 pho tographic glass-plate negatives taken by the Wright brothers in highly reduced form as positive images on five microfiche. The publication was prepared for the press by Leonard C. Bruno. Twenty-five years earlier, to celebrate the fiftieth anni versary of powered flight, a two-volume edition of The Papers of Wilbur and Orville Wright, Including the Chanute- Wright Let ters and Other Papers of Octave Chanute (New York: McGraw McGraw-Hill Book Company, 1953) was published under the sponsorship of Oberlin College. In that major initial tribute, the Wrights’ letters, diaries, notebooks, and other records of their scientific and technical work in inventing and perfecting the air plane were edited by Marvin W. McFarland of what was then the Library’s Aeronautics Division. As a contributor to that work, the present writer com piled several auxiliary files to supplement and help in organizing the wealth of material in the Wright papers. Two of these, later expanded, updated, and published to mark other anniversaries, were Wilbur & Orville Wright: A Bibliography Commemorating the Hundredth Anniversary of the Birth of Wilbur Wright, April 16, 1867 (Washington: Library of Congress, 1968) and Wilbur & Orville Wright: A Chronology Commemorating the Hundredth Anniversary of the Birth of Orville Wright, August 19, 1871 (Washington: Library of Congress, 1975).

  • Britain's Aviation Pioneers
Britain’s Aviation Pioneers Britain can be proud of it’s role in the development of early ballooning and flying. TheGenealogist launches searchable database of flying certificates with biographical notes and photographs. Aviation in Britain started with Samuel Cody and his work for the Army at Aldershot and Farnborough. He designed the first British Airships and went on to develop early aircraft. One of the founder members in 1903 was Charles Rolls, the motoring and aviation pioneer. His aviation career was initially as a balloonist, with him making over 170 balloon ascents. He was the second person in Britain to be licensed to fly by The Aero Club and won the Gordon Bennett Gold Medal for the longest single flight time. As powered flight became popular, Rolls tried unsuccessfully to persuade his new business partner, Henry Royce, to design an aero engine. Instead, he purchased one of the early aircraft designed by the famous Wright Brothers and made more than 200 flights. In 1909, he made the first nonstop double crossing of the English Channel by aeroplane. For this achievement, he was awarded the Gold Medal from The Royal Aero Club in 1910 (previous winners included Wilbur and Orville Wright and Louis Bleriot). The records now available on TheGenealogist from The Royal Aero Club celebrate his successes and also show the esteemed company he kept amongst those early daring aviators. Names such as Thomas Sopwith, Geoffrey De Havilland, Henry Hawker, Cecil Grace and the famed American showman and entrepreneur, Samuel Franklin Cody, are all found in the records now available online.

Charles Rolls Memorial Trust Tragedy at Air Pageant – Famous Aviator Dies Charles Rolls Memorial Trust This might have been the headline 100 years ago when the first Englishman to die in a motor driven aircraft accident crashed at The memorial plaque in the grounds of St Peter's School Southbourne on 12 th July 1910 during an Air Pageant on the flat area of which the current Broadway road is a part. The Pageant had been organised to celebrate the then Centenary of Bournemouth in 1910. Part of the competition had been to land as close as possible to a touch down point. Rolls had tried to improve on an earlier attempt but the tail of his aircraft, a Wright Flyer (with a tail modification) failed at a critical moment and the aircraft plunged to earth from about 80 feet. So died Charles Rolls, at the age of 32, whose partnership a few years earlier with Henry Royce created the famous Rolls-Royce Company in 1906. • Clyde "Upside-Down" Pangborn
Clyde "Upside - Down" Pangborn Clyde Edward "Upside-Down" Pangborn made crowds gasp when he performed his daring aerial stunts during the Roaring Twenties. He was among the period's finest aerial showmen. As his nickname suggests, he was anything but a conventional pilot, and people loved him for it. But Pangborn was much more than an entertainer. In 1931, he and a fellow aviator set a world record when they became the first people to fly non-stop from Japan to the United States. Pangborn also served as a test pilot in his later years. During his career, Pangborn not only knew the thrill of entertaining crowds and establishing records, but also the painstaking process of thoroughly testing a plane and making it safe for other pilots to fly. Pangborn was born on October 28, 1894, in Bridgeport, Washington. At age two, he and his family moved to Idaho. After graduating from high school, Pangborn took classes in civil engineering for about two years at the University of Idaho before enlisting in the army. During World War I, Pangborn served as a flight instructor for the U.S. Army at Ellington Field in Houston. There he taught cadets how to fly the Curtiss JN-4 "Jenny" biplane. Although Pangborn had a relatively uneventful military career, he did acquire a rather unique talent. Pangborn learned to slow-roll his plane onto its back and fly upside down. His fellow pilots subsequently began calling him "Upside-Down Pang," a name that would stick with him for life, although most people would shorten the nickname to either "Upside-Down" or "Pang." After the war, many military aviators, like Pangborn, wanted to use their new skills as pilots to earn a living.
