Also, when using QTB, the mechanical properties are not determined by chemistry alone, so the operator is able to adjust the quenching phase of the process to adapt to the changes in chemistry. The process is able to absorb a wider range of residu- als in the steel scrap compared to a more traditional process, while still achieving the strength aims of the standard being manufactured. QTB Microstructural Evaluation Steel is an allotropie material, meaning it can exist in different crystalline structures. Most "plain" carbon steel exists in the ferrite microstructure. It is magnetic, stable and, for the strength it imparts, it remains reasonably ductile. Because steel is allotropie, it can be heat treated to change the mechanical properties of the metal. An alternate steel microstructure that Martensite "molecule ' (hexagonal bipyramid). is also stable at ambient temperature is martensite. Martensite is stronger and harder than ferrite and has a correspondingly lower ductility. Figures 2 and Figure 4 3 represent comparison renderings of the molecular structures. The ferrite rendering (Figure 2) is typical of most carbon steels. The martensite rendering (Figure 3) is typical of the surface (case) of a QTB-treated bar. Tempering the martensite is necessary to reduce internal stresses to the newly formed martensite and to eliminate brittleness in the final bar. Comparison micro etches are shown in Figures 4 and 5. The core of the QTB-treated bar (Figure 6) is pearlitic. Grain refinement of the pearlitic core of the bar is observed compared with as-rolled bar of identical chemistry (Figure 7). The part responsible for water delivery is commonly called a "cooler." Figure 9 is a schematic showing the water delivery to the bar for one cooler. The cooler shown in Figure 9 is supplied with high- pressure water and is capable of sustaining high flow- rates of water. In practice, multiple coolers are placed in series in order to obtain the desired quenching power of the system, as shown in Figure 10. Water must be supplied with sufficient pressure to avoid steam generation — commonly called a "steam barrier." Steam acts as a thermal insulator and reduces the rate at which heat is extracted from the bar, which can prevent formation of martensite. Several consider- ations are needed to maintain effective quenching. A pumping system must, be installed that can maintain the pressure and flowrates to create martensite on the surface of the bar. The loss of biodiversity is also mentioned. All these topics are analyzed with historical hindsight and the present understanding of their physics and chemistry is discussed, stressing areas where knowledge is still lacking. In the face of all these issues, technological solutions were sought to alleviate their effects: many areas are presently satisfactorily handled (the circular economy—a historical’ practice in the case of steel, energy conservation, air/water/soil emissions) and in line with present environmental regulations; on the other hand, there are important hanging issues, such as the generation of mine tailings (and tailings dam failures), the emissions of greenhouse gases (the steel industry plans to become carbon-neutral by 2050, at least in the EU), and the emission of fine PM, which WHO correlates with premature deaths. Moreover, present regulatory levels of emissions will necessarily become much stricter.

Namely, the paper discusses improving of the batch intensive quenching (IQ) process known as IQ-2 method by the use of hydrodynamic emitters installed in quench tanks. The hydrodynamic emitters produce oscillating waves in the quench media with the frequency of the film boiling process creating a resonance effect. Two- and three-step IQ-2 processes are considered. Specifics of the heat transfer during the IQ-2 process are presented with focusing on the first stage of quenching where film and nucleate boiling processes are taking place. Examples of production IQ-2 equipment and loads processed are also presented. Application of hydro- dynamic emitters in the IQ water tanks in addition to currently used propellers is considered in details. It is shown that the proposed new method can fully eliminate the film boiling process resulting in significant reduction of part distortion during quenching. Fur- ther evaluation of the proposed method is needed for its implementation in heat treating practice. TEEL M A ILL ’S NEWEST 39 Situated on 1,300 acres in Osceola, Ark., USA, Big River Steel was thought by the late John Correnti to be “Steel Mill Heaven.” Its location in the fastest-growing steel-consuming region in the U.S. is ideal, and its proximity to the Mississippi River and direct access to the BNSF Railway indeed lighten the load of shipping and logistics. The lineage of Big River Steel can be traced from the start-up of mills such as Nucor Steel–Berkeley in Huger, S.C., and the former SeverCorr plant (now owned by Steel Dynamics Inc.) in Columbus, Miss. The idea of the “Flex Mill™” was conceived by Correnti to maximize efficiency while broadening product offerings, including advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) and electrical steels. Where older mini-mills were constructed prior to the advent of AHSS grades, and now require extensive redesign and retrofitting to produce AHSS, Big River was designed and equipped for these demanding grades. Plans for the 1.6-million-ton-annual-capacity mill were announced in 2013, and construction broke ground in July 2014, with an official ceremony on 22 September 2014. The long-awaited first coil was produced in December 2016 in its first try and in only 18 hours from first arc to coil. The coil was sold to nearby Atlas Tube, a division of Zekelman Industries Inc. Outfall 604 contains blowdown from the common gas cooling and scrubber process water treatment and recycle system for the No. C5 and C6 blast furnaces. The treatment and recycle system includes clarifiers for removal of particulates removed from the blast furnaces gas, a mechanical draft cooling tower for cooling the re‐circulating water and ancillary pump stations and sludge dewatering equipment. A portion of the re‐circulating water is used for cooling slag generated from the blast furnaces and a low volume blow‐down is discharged through Outfall 604. The discharge from Outfall 604 is combined with non‐contact cooling water, storm water and groundwater and is discharged via Outfall 005 to the Cuyahoga River.
