Santiago de Cuba, Cuba RESUMEN Fueron revisadas las colecciones malacológicas históricas “Cleto Sánchez Falcón” y “M. L. Jaume”, depositadas en el Museo de Historia Natural “Tomás Romay” y el Museo “Jorge Ramón Cuevas”. De ambas colecciones se copiaron los datos de etiqueta del material tipo. La validez de la información de etiqueta para cada lote fue revisada con las descripciones originales correspondientes a cada especie, revisiones taxonómicas de familias y catálogos actualizados. Se registraron 434 ejemplares, incluidos en 56 subespecies, 34 especies y seis (6) familias; estos se corresponden con 85 localidades y 16 colectores. La colección “Cleto Sánchez Falcón” posee 368 ejemplares de las familias Annulariidae, Cerionidae, Megalomastomidae, Helicinidae, Orthalicidae y Urocoptidae, siendo esta última la más representada. La colección “M. L. Jaume” tiene 66 ejemplares de 36 subespecies de Liguus fasciatus (Müller), Orthalicidae. Palabras clave: moluscos terrestres, material tipo, colección histórica, Cuba. ABSTRACT The historic malacological collections “Cleto Sánchez Falcón” and “M. L. Jaume” housed in the Museo de Historia Natural “Tomás Romay” and Museo “Jorge Ramón Cuevas” were revised, and the label data of type material was copied. The validity of the information on labels for each lot was revised with the original descriptions for all species, taxonomic revisions of families and updated catalogues. -

NATIONAL MUSEUM Vol.85 Washington: 1938 No. 3039 THE CUBAN OPERCULATE LAND SHELLS OF THE SUBFAMILY CHONDROPOMINAE By Carlos de la Torre and Paul Bartsch INTRODUCTION In all tlie world there i.s no place of equivalent area that has a o-reater number of si)ecies and races of land shells than the Island of Cuba. It is a veritable paradise for the lover of mollusks, for we find not only a numerical preponderance but also beauty of outline and coloration rivaling the faunas of the Philippine and Hawaiian Islands. The interesting features presented by this fauna are not restricted in appeal to the systematic zoologists—taxonomists—for here the student of genetics and heredity also will find a veritable laboratory teeming with an endless number of problems inviting solution. In Pinar del Rio Province, in western Cuba, the Organ Mountains, because they are broken up into isolated blocks and by the even greater cutting up of the lateral folds to the north and south, now^ largely represented by the series of mogotes—hills—of varying size into which the teeth of time have cut them, show splendidly in their faunas the effects of isolation and inbreeding, resulting in an almost endless array of races, each confined to a limestone cliff, which may vary in size from a barn door to miles in extent. To such restricted habitats most of the members of the subfamily Chondropominae are more firmly wedded today than they would bo if they occupied equally distant islands, from which they might be carried by currents or waves to neighboring shores, for gi'assy inter- vals present a greater barrier to these calciphil dwellers than would the open sea. -

BREURE Abstract . ─ Shells dangling on lines attached to a substratum may be either empty shell in use by spiders, or gastropods in hibernation. Previous data on dangling gastropods and malacophagy by spiders and harvestmen are summarized and discussed. Some new observations on dangling shells are reported from various localities in the West Indies. Résumé . – Les coquilles suspendues par des fils attachés à un substrat peuvent être soit des coquilles vides utilisées par les araignées, soit des gastéropodes en hivernation. Les données antérieures sur les gastéropodes suspendus et la malacophagie par les araignées et les opilions sont résumées et discutées. Quelques nouvelles observations sur les coquilles suspendues sont signalées dans diverses localités des Antilles. Introduction Recently DEELEMAN -REINHOLD (2009) published an observation that she, as an arachnologist, made some years ago when collecting spiders in rainforests in Borneo. She observed shells of Alycaeus (Cyclophoridae), dangling on lines attached to limestone slabs. This behaviour was cursorily reported by SCHILTHUIZEN et al . (1999). However, as Deeleman-Reinhold found eight spiderlings inside the 22 shells observed, behind the operculum, she suggested that the shells were possibly used for shelter or deposition of eggs. More generally, observations on spider-gastropod interaction are usually limited to prey-predator relationships. Although spiders have been reported in entomological literature to predate on gastropods (for a review, see NYFELLER & S YMONDSON , 2001; see also ACOSTA & M ACHADO , 2007), this is hardly reported in malacological literature (DU PREEZ , 2001; POLLARD & J ACKSON , 2004). -

Pomacea Perry, 1810 Diagnostic features Large to very large globose smooth shells, sutures channelled (Pomacea canaliculata) or with the top of the whorl shouldered and flat at the suture (Pomacea diffusa). Shells umbilicate with unthickened lip. Uniform yellow to olive green with darker spiral bands. nterior of aperture orange to yellow. Operculate, with concentric operculum. Animal with distinctive head-foot; snout uniquely with a pair of distal, long, tentacle-like processes; cephalic tentacles very long. A long 'siphon' is also present. Distribution Native to North and South America but some species have been introduced around the world through the aquarium trade (Pomacea diffusa) and as a food source (Pomacea canaliculata). Pomacea diffusa has been reported from the Ross River in Townsville in NE Queensland, and from freshwater waterbodies in the greater Brisbane area, pswich and Urangan near Maryborough in SE Queensland. Notes This genus is widely known in the aquarium trade through the so-called mystery snail, Pomacea diffusa. n countries such as the Philippines, Hawaii and parts of SE Asia, the species Pomacea canaliculata (Lamarck) is a serious pest of rice crops. -

Aceptado 25-III-2009. Abstract: Land snails from the Viñales limestone highlands, Pinar del Río, Cuba. The land snails inhabiting the limestone highlands in Cuba are poorly known. From field surveys, traditional collection catalogues, and the literature, we list 136 species, 49 genera and 19 families, 90 % of the species endemic to Cuba; only five species are non-indigenous of the Cuban archipelago. Annulariidae and Urocoptidae are the most represented families, and Chondrothyra and Liocallonia are the genera with the highest number of species. Forty-four spe- cies of this list were absent from the consulted collections. -
