A Guide to ICE FISHING LAWS

As Applied to the Several Counties

State House Augusta, Maine 1929 ICE FISHING LAWS

The laws given in this sheet are the laws and season as they apply to the several counties; where no special laws are given the general law of the State will prevail. This is as follows: Minimum length of trout, 6 inches. Minimum length of salmon, 12 inches. Minimum length of white perch, 6 inches. Black bass cannot be legally taken through the ice. Maximum amount of game fish that can be caught or had ih possession at one time: 25 fish not to exceed 15 pounds in weight, unless the last fish caught increases the weight to more than fifteen pounds. 5 lines to a person when fishing for pickerel during N o­ vember and December and only 5 lines to a family when fishing through the ice during the balance of the year. Only one hook to a line is permissible when plug fishing at anytime.

ANDROSCOGGIN COUNTY Ice Fishing Laws It iip lawful to fish through the ice for pickerel at any time, and fpr protected game fish during the months of February and /March of each year, in accordance with the general law ocj the State, in all lakes, ponds and rivers situated wholly or partly in Androscoggin County, EXCEPT Androscoggin Lfke, (partly in Kennebec County); Hooper Pond in Greene; Ltike Auburn; and Pleasant Pond in Turner, in which last named lakes and ponds it shall be unlawful to fish for)<(.... aiiy kind of fish at any time on or through the ice. Sec. 18 as amended. Thompson Pond (partly in Cumber­ land and Oxford Counties). Closed season on salmon, trout hnd togue from September 1st to January 1st. I Chap 8, P. &. S. L., 1925. Moose Hill Pond, in East Livermore, open to ice fishing only in January, February and March. Fishing at any other time prohibited.

AROOSTOOK COUNTY Ice Fishing Laws j It is lawful to fish through the ice for pickerel at any time, Ind for protected game fish during the months of February, March and April of each year, in accordance with the general jw of the State, in all the lakes, ponds and rivers in Aroos- \ok County EXCEPT in Ross and Cary Lakes in Littleton; ortage Lake in Portage; Rockabema Lake and Hale, Green, 'jteroad, Bear Mountain and Bradford Ponds in Moro ^ntation, and in Mud Lake in Moro Plantation (also (ly in Penobscot County), in which last named lakes and on\k it shall be unlawful to fish for .... any kind of fish at arty time on or through the ice. CUMBERLAND COUNTY Ice Fishing Laws It is lawful to fish through the ice for pickerel at any time, and for protected game fish during the months of February and March of each year, in accordance with the general law of the State, in all the lakes, ponds and rivers in Cumberland County EXCEPT Sabbathday Lake in the town of New Gloucester, Thomas Pond in Raymond and Casco, Anony­ mous Pond in Harrison, Little Sebago Lake, which lake is situated partly in Gray and partly in Windham, Peabody Pond in Naples, Sebago and Bridgton. Chap. 355, P. L. 1929. Minimum length of trout 10 inches; salmon 12 inches. Chap 113, P. L. 1925, as amended, lawful to take pickerel and white perch only through the ice in Watchic Pond, in Standish. Open season in Sebago and Long Pond, April 1st to October 1st on salmon and trout. Lower Kezar, July 1st to Dec. 1st, open season on white perch.

FRANKLIN COUNTY Ice Fishing Laws It shall be unlawful to fish for . . . . any kind of fish at any time on or through the ice in any waters situated wholly or partly in Franklin County EXCEPT it shall be lawful to fish through the ice for pickerel at any time and for pro­ tected game fish during the months of February and March of each year, in accordance with the general law of the State, in Bents Pond, in New Sharon (and m Vienna, in Kennebert County), in Drury Pond in Temple; in Walton’s Mill Pon^ in Farmington; in all the lakes and ponds situated wholly in Chesterville; in Gammon Pond, situated partly in Somer­ set County, and in Daggett’s Mill Pond, in New Vineyard which pond is situated about one and one-half miles easterly of New Vineyard Village and near the road leading from said village to the village of New Portland, in Somerset County, and in Half Moon or Jenne Pond, partly in Oxford County, (see Oxford County) and in Mirror Lake (or Parkis Pond), and Mud Pond, in Jay. ' (NOTE. The above named lakes and ponds are the only waters in Franklin County open to ice fishing).

HANCOCK COUNTY Ice Fishing Laws It is lawful to fish through the ice for pickerel at any tinrn, and for protected game fish during the months of February, March and April of each year, in accordance with the general law of the State, in all the lakes, ponds and rivers in Hancock County EXCEPT Turtle Lake (or Bubble Pond), on Mt. Desert Island; Narraguagus Lake in Townships 9, 10 and 16, unorganized places; Craig Pond in Orland; Blunt Pond in Lamoine, in which last named lakes and ponds it shall be unlawful to fish for, take, catch or kill any kind of fish at any time on or through the ice. (See Brewer Pond, partly in this county, under Penobscot County.) 3 and West Lake It is unlawful to fish for .... any kind of fish at any time on or through the ice in Nicatous Lake or in West Lake, except on Thursday of each week, on which day it shall be lawful to fish through the ice in said lakes, in accordance with the general laws of the State applying to ice fishing. Union River Chap. 86, P. L. 1927. Sec. 1. It is unlawful to fish for . . . . any pickerel at any time in Union River, including the portions of said river now known as Leonard Lake and Graham Lake, or in any streams or brook tributary to said river, in the county of Hancock, from the thirtieth day of September of each year until the ice is out of said river or tributary fished in the following spring, except it shall be lawful to take pickerel through the ice in said river, including the portion thereof known as Graham Lake and Leonard Lake, in accordance with the provisions of the general law of the State applying to ice fishing for salmon and trout, as found in Sec. 18, Ch. 219, P. L. 1917, as amended. Provided, how­ ever, that it shall be unlawful for any person to take, catch, kill or have in possession in any one day more than fifteen pounds of pickerel, unless the last fish taken increases the combined weight thereof to more than fifteen pounds, taken in said river or Graham Lake, so-called. Birch Harbor Pond Closed to All Fishing Except Through the Ice Ch. 68, P. L. 1925. It is unlawful to fish for .... any kind of fish at any time in Birch Harbor Pond, in Winter Harbor, in the county of Hancock, EXCEPT it shall be lawful to fish through the ice in said pond during the months of February, March and April of each year, in accordance with the general ice fishing laws of the State.

KENNEBEC COUNTY Ice Fishing Laws It is lawful to fish through the ice for pickerel at any time, and for protected game fish during the months of February and March of each year, in accordance with the general law of the State, in all ihe lakes, ponds and rivers in Kennebec County EXCEPT Lake Maranacook in Winthrop and Read- field; Wilson Pond in Winthrop, Wayne and Monmouth; Echo Lake in Readfield, Fayette and Mt. Vernon; Pocasset Lake in Wayne; Great, Long, Little, Ellis, McGraw and Snow Ponds said ponds being part of the Belgrade Chain of Lakes, so-called; East and North Ponds, said ponds being part of the Belgrade Chain of Lakes, situated partly in the ^JfO'iRty of Kennebec and partly in the county of Somerset; also Narrows Pond in Winthrop; Flying Pond in Mt. Vernon and Vienna; Parker Pond in Mt. Vernon, Vienna and Fayette, (and in Chesterville, Franklin County); Pleasant Pond in West Gardiner, Litchfield and Gardiner (and in Richmond, Sagadahoc County); Mud Pond in Litchfield (see Sagadahoc County regulations for special ice fishing law on the portion of Mud Pond which is situated in the town of Richmond); .Horseshoe and Oxbow Ponds in West Gardiner; Tilton, David and Basin Ponds in Fayette; Ward Pond in Sidney; and the Tacoma Chain of Lakes, so-called, as follows: Pur­ gatory Pond, Sand Pond, Buker Pond and Jimmie Pond, in Litchfield. 4 Nahumlseag Pond A bag limit of 10 fish is imposed when ice fishing in Nahum- keag Pond, in Pittston. * Coclinewagon Pond Gh. 181, P. L. 1927. It is unlawful to fish for, take, catch or kill at any time any kind of fish on or through the ice in Cochnewagon Pond, in Monmouth, except it shall be lawful to fish in said pond through the ice for pickerel and white perch, with not more than five set lines to a family, in the day time, when under the immediate personal supervision of the person fishing, on Saturday of each week, during February and March of each year. It is unlawful for any person or family to take, catch or kill in said pond more than fifteen pounds of pickerel and white perch in all, in any one day, while fishing through the! ice, or to have in possession in any one day more than fiteenf! pounds of pickerel and white perch in all so taken in said pond. Greeley (or Torsey) Pond R. &. R. It is unlawful to fish .... at any time on or through the ice in Greeley Pond, or Torsey Pond, so-called, in Readfield, and Mt. Vernon, EXCEPT in that portion of said pond known as the “ Stream” or “ Meadow,” south of the channel connecting the main pond with the meadow, it shall be lawful to fish through the ice in accordance with the general law of the State governing ice fishing. Love joy Pond v It is unlawful to fish .... at any time on or through the ice in Lovejoy Pond in Albion, EXCEPT on Thursday each' week it shall be lawful to fish through the ice in said pond in accordance with the general law of the State govern­ ing ice fishing. Provided, however, it shall be unlawful for any person to take, catch or kill more than ten fish in all in any one day in said pond while fishing through the ice . ... .

Three Mile Pond It is unlawful to fish for, take, catch or kill any kind of fish at any time on or through the ice in Three-Mile Pond, so-called, in China, and in Windsor, and in Vassalboro, except or Thursday, Friday and Saturday of each week, during whicl days it shall be lawful to fish through the ice in said water: in accordance with the general law of the State govemin ice fishing. Three Cornered Pond All ice fishing prohibited in Three Cornered Ponu i Augusta, EXCEPT on Thursday, Friday and Saturday c each week it shall be lawful to fish therein in accordanc with the general law of the State governing ice fishing.

Pattees Pond It shall be unlawful for any person to fish . . . at any tim< on or through the ice in Pattees Pond, in Winslow, EXCEPT on Tuesday of each week it shall be lawful to fish in said pom through the ice in accordance with the general law of th State governing ice fishing. 5 Webber Pond It is unlawful to fish .... at any time on or through the ice in Webber Pond in Vassalboro, EXCEPT on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of each week during the time said pond is closed by ice it shall be lawful to fish therein in accordance with the general law of the State governing ice fishing. (See Ice Fishing Laws on Long Pond in Somerville and Jefferson in Lincoln County, and in Windsor in Kennebec County, under Lincoln County). Cobbosseecontee It is unlawful to fish .... at any time on or through the ice in Cobbosseecontee Lake, EXCEPT on Saturday of each week between January 15 and March 15, both days inclusive, of each year, it shall be lawful to take pickerel through the ice in the day time with not more than five set lines to a family, when under the personal supervision of the person fishing. Lake Cobbosseecontee, minimum length on trout, 12 inches. Maranacook Ch. 363, P. L. 1929. Lake Maranacook, open to residents of Readfield on Thursdays during January, for perch and pickerel fishing only.

KNOX COUNTY Ice Fishing Laws It shall be lawful to fish through the ice for pickerel at any :ime, and for protected game fish during the months of February and March of each year, in accordance with the 5?uAral law of the State, in all the lakes, ponds and rivers in tvuox County EXCEPT Crystal Lake in Washington, Fresh Pond in North Haven and Lily Pond in Rockport, in which last named lake and ponds it shall be unlawful to fish for, take, catch or kill any kind of fish at any time on or through the ice.

LINCOLN COUNTY Ice Fishing Laws It is lawful to fish through the ice for pickerel at any time, and for protected game fish during the months of February and March of each year, in accordance with the general law of the State, in all the lakes, ponds and rivers in Lincoln County, EXCEPT Dyer’s Pond and Little Dyer’s Pond in Jefferson, in which last named ponds it shall be unlawful for any person to fish for, take, catch or kill any kind of fish at any time on or through the ice. Long Pond in Somerville and Jefferson (and in Windsor, Kennebec County) Ch. 66, P L. 1925. It shall be unlawful to fish for .... any kind of fish at any time on or through the ice in Long Pond, so-called, which pond is situated in the towns of Somerville and Jefferson, in the county of Lincoln, and in the town of Windsor, in the county of Kennebec. R. &. R. Pinkham Pond in Aina closed to all fishing. White perch can be taken in Pemaquid Pond, Biscay Pond, and Hilton Lake (or McCurda Pond), Lincoln County, at any time. The only restriction imposed is the bag limit of 25 fish, or 15 pounds. 6 OXFORD COUNTY Ice Fishing Laws It shall be lawful to fish through the ice for pickerel at any time, and for protected game fish during the months of February and March of each year, in accordance with the general law of the State, in the following named and specified lakes and ponds, wherever situated,- but in no other waters, in Oxford County, namely: (NOTE: The following is the list of lakes and ponds open to ice fishing:) In Barker Pond partly in Cumberland County. Bear Pond in Waterford. Beaver Pond in Denmark. Bickford Pond in Porter. Bird Pond in Norway. Black Pond in Fryeburg. Bradley Pond in Lovell. Bungamuck Pond in Hartford. Burntland Pond in Albany. Burnt Meadow Pond in Brownfield. Chapman Pond in Porter. Charles Pond in Fryeburg. Clay Pond in Fryeburg. The Two Clemens Pond in Hiram. Colcord Pond in Porter. Crocker Pond in Albany. Cushman Pond in Lovell. Dan Charles Pond in Lovell. Farrington Pond in Lovell. Grandeur Pond in Denmark. Haley Pond in Fryeburg. Half Moon or Jenne Pond in Mexico, (and in Carthag< , Franklin Co.) Lake Kezar, in Lovell, Stoneham and Stow, for pickerel cusk and smelts only. Lower Kimball Pond, partly in Fryeburg. Kneeland Pond in Albany. Little Labrador Pond in Sumner. Little Pond in Denmark. Little Pond in Fryeburg. Long Pond in Denmark. Long Pond in Porter. Long Pond in Waterford. Lovewell’s Pond, partly in Fryeburg. McWain’s Pond in Waterford. Middle Pond in Hiram. Moose Pond in Denmark. Moose Pond in Paris. Moose Pond in Waterford. Mud Pond in Paris. North Pond in Norway. 7 North Pond in Sumner. North Pond in Greenwood and Woodstock. Papoose Pond in Waterford. Plains Pond in Porter. Pleasant Pond in Fryeburg, Denmark and Brownfield. Pleasant Pond in Sumner. Proctor Pond in Albany and Stoneham. Rattlesnake Pond in Brownfield. Round Pond in Greenwood and Woodstock. Roxbury Pond in Roxbury and Byron. Sand Pond in Denmark. Shell Pond in Stow and Stoneham. Slab City Pond in Lovell. South Pond in Greenwood. Southeast Pond, partly in Cumberland County. Stearns Pond in Sweden. The Two Spectacle Ponds in Porter. Two Spec Pond in Waterford. The Three Stanley Ponds in Hiram and Porter. Trafton Pond in Hiram and Porter. Virginia Lake in Stoneham. Webber Pond in Sweden. Whitney Pond in Oxford.

PENOBSCOT COUNTY Ice Fishing Laws It shall be lawful to fish through the ice for pickerel at any time, and for protected game fish during the months of February, March and April of each year, in accordance with the general law of the State, in all the lakes, ponds and rivers m Penobscot County, EXCEPT , or /assadumkeag Stream, so-called, above Lowell’s Dam, so- called, in the county of Penobscot and the county of Han­ cock; Ware Pond in Lee; Davis Pond in Township 5, Range 7, W. E. L. S.; Bowlin, Kimball and Messer Ponds in Town­ ship 5, Range 8; Lunksoos Pond in Township 4, Range 7; Upper and Lower Shin Ponds; Pleasant Lake and Mud Lake in Township 6, Range 6 (and Moro Plantation, Aroostook County); George, Ben Annis and Tracy Ponds in Herman; Upper Dobsis Lake in Lakeville Plantation; Katahdin Lake ih Township 3, Range 8, W. E. L. S.; Spring Pond and Moose Pond in Township 6, Range 7, W. E. L. S.; Cold Stream Pond, also known as Lower Cold Stream Pond, and Upper Cold Stream Pond in Enfield and Lowell, in which last named river, lakes and ponds it shall be unlawful to fish for, take, tatch or kill any kind of fish at any time on or through the ice. Green Mountain Pond It shall be unlawful to fish for . . . . any kind of fish at any time on or through the ice in Green Mountain Pond, in Township 6, Range 6, W. E. L. S. Special Ice Fishing Regulations In Brewer Pond, in Orrington and Holden (also in Bucks- port in Hancock County), it shall be unlawful for any person to take .... in any one day, on or through the ice, more than five fish in all, or to have in possession in any one day more than five fish in all so taken in said pond. In Stetson Pond, in Stetson, it shall be unlawful to fish for .... any kind of fish through the ice EXCEPT pickerel, and white perch. PISCATAQUIS COUNTY Ice Fishing Laws It shall be lawful to fish through the ice for pickerel at any time, and for protected game fish during the months of February, March and April of each year, in accordance with the general law of the State, in the following named and specified lakes and ponds, but in no other waters, in Piscata­ quis County, namely: (NOTE: All other waters closed to ice fishing). . Ambejejus Lake. The Bennett Ponds in Guilford. Big Benson Pond in Willimantic and Bowerbank. Little Benson Pond in Bowerbank. Big Huston Pond, situated wholly or partly in Township 7, Range 9, N. W. P. Caribou Lake. . Center Pond in Sangerville. . Chemquassabamticook Lake. . Churchill Lake. Coffey loss Pond in Township 6, Range 11. Carpenter Pond in Township 7, Range 11. The four Davis Ponds in Guilford and Willimantic. Debsconeag Lake. Eagle Lake. East and West Ebemee Ponds in Township 5, Range 9, N. W. P., and Brownville. First Buttermilk Pond (or Long Pond) in Townships 7 and 8, Range 9, and Townships 7 and 8, Range 10, N. «V. P. Fourth Buttermilk Pond in Bowerbank. Grand Lake. S. 9 Special Ice Fishing Regulations Harlow Pond in Parkman and in Boyd Lake in Orneville It shall be unlawful to fish for . . . . any kind of fish on or through the ice in Harlow Pond in Parkman or in Boyd Lake in Orneville, EXCEPT it shall be lawful to take pickerel through the ice in said waters in accordance with the general law of the State. Lake Onawa It shall be unlawful to fish .... at any time on or through !the ice in Lake Onawa in Elliottsville and Willimantic E X ­ CEPT during February, March and April in each year, during which open season it shall be lawful to fish through the jce in said lake in accordance with the general law of the State; provided, however, it shall be unlawful for any person to take, catch or kill in said lake, in any one day, more than five pounds of fish in all, nor more than one fish, on or through the ice, or to have in possession in any one day more than five pounds of fish in all, nor more than one fish, so taken in said waters.

SOMERSET COUNTY Ice Fishing Laws It shall be lawful to fish through the ice for pickerel at any time and for protected game fish during the months of Fehruary, March and April of each year, in accordance with . th<| general law of the State, in the following named and | specified river, lakes and ponds, but in no other waters, in | Sofmerset County, namely: ■ LCJarker Pond in Cornville. Holeb Pond in Holeb. 1 Little Indian Pond and Big Indian Pond in St. Albans. | Little Big Wood Pond in Dennistown, so-called. \ The Kennebec River in Somerset County. Kingsbury Pond in Brighton and Mayfield (and partly in Piscataquis Co.). Long Pond in Long Pond Plantation and Jackman PI. Martin (or Long Pond) in The Forks Plantation. Mhyfield Pond in Mayfield. Stafford Pond in Hartland. Starbird Pond in Hartland. Ten Thousand Acre Pond in Ten Thousand Acre Township. Weeks Pond in Brighton. Wyman Pond in Brighton. Wesserunsett (or Hayden) Lake in Madison. Big Wood Lake Ice fishing prohibited in Big Wood Lake, in Jackman, Dennistown and Attean Township. Special Ice Fishing Regulations White’s Pond in Palmyra It shall be unlawful to fish at any time on or through the ice in White’s Pond, so-called, in Palmyra, except on Thurs­ days during the months of February and March of each year it shall be lawful to fish through the ice in said pond in accordance with the general law of the State; provided, however, that no person shall take, catch or kill more than ten fish in all, or not exceeding ten pounds of fish in all, in any one day, in said pond, through the ice, unless the last fish taken increases the combined weight thereof to more than ten pounds.

WALDO COUNTY Ice Fishing Laws It shall be lawful to fish through the ice for pickerel at any time, and for protected game fish during the months of February and March of each year in accordance with the general law of the State, in all the lakes, ponds and rivers in Waldo County.

WASHINGTON COUNTY Ice Fishing Laws It shall be lawful to fish through the ice for pickerel at any time, and for protected game fish during the months of j February, March and April of each year, in accordance with / the general law of the State, in all the lakes, ponds and riven/ in Washington County EXCEPT Lambert Lake, in whicV last named lake it shall be unlawful to fish for . . . . an/ kind of fish at any time on or through the ice. Special Ice Fishing Regulations on Certain Waters It shall also be unlawful to fish for .... any kind of fish at any time on or through the ice in Grand Lake or in West Lake, which lakes are situated in the county of Washington, or in Dobsis Lake, or in Pocumcus Lake, or in Pleasant Lake, , which lakes are situated partly in the county of Washington and partly in the county of Penobscot, EXCEPT it shall be lawful for citizens of this State to fish through the ice in said lakes, in accordance with the general law of the State, com­ mencing February 1st of each year. 11 YORK COUNTY Ice Fishing Laws It shall be lawful to fish through the ice for pickerel at any time, and for protected game fish during the months of February and March of each year, in accordance with the general law of the State, in all the lakes, ponds and rivers in York County EXCEPT Messabesic Pond in Alfred, Little­ field Pond in Alfred, Mousam Lake, Square Lake, Goose Pond, Middle Branch Pond, in Alfred and Waterboro, York Pond in Y'ork and Elliot, Boyd’s Pond and Dole Pond in Limington, Kennebunk Pond, in which last named ponds it shall be unlawful for any person to fish for .... any kind of fish at any time on or through the ice.
