This study aimed to determine the current state of knowledge regarding parasites of the Southern Hemisphere freshwater fish family Galaxiidae, in order to identify knowledge gaps to focus future research attention. Specifically, we assessed how galaxiid–parasite knowledge differs among geographic regions in relation to research effort (i.e., number of studies or fish individuals examined, extent of tissue examination, taxonomic resolution), in addition to ecological traits known to influ- ence parasite richness. To date, ~50% of galaxiid species have been examined for parasites, though the majority of studies have focused on single parasite taxa rather than assessing the full diversity of macro- and microparasites. The highest number of parasites were observed from Argentinean galaxiids, and studies in all geographic regions were biased towards the highly abundant and most widely distributed galaxiid species, Galaxias maculatus. -

Saccular otolith mass asymmetry was studied in eight flatfish species (110 otolith pairs) and compared with data from a previously published study on roundfishes. As in the case of symmetrical fishes, the absolute value of w in flatfishes does not depend on fish length and otolith growth rate, although otolith mass and the absolute value of otolith mass difference are correlated with fish length. The values of w were between À0Á2 and þ0Á2in96Á4% of flatfishes studied. The mean Æ S.E. value of w in flatfishes was significantly larger than in standard bilaterally symmetrical marine fishes (‘roundfishes’), respectively 0Á070 Æ 0Á006 and 0Á040 Æ 0Á006. -

The bi- and trivalved spores were observed in the gallbladder of T. ovatus. Mature bivalved spores of C. batam n. sp. were transversely elongated and narrowly crescent in shape, 3.8 ± 0.36 (2.7–4.6) μm long and 19.2 ± 1.75 (16.2–22.0) μm thick. Two sub-spherical polar capsules were 2.3 ± 0.18 (2.0–2.8) μmlong and 2.6 ± 0.16 (2.3–2.9) μm wide. Prevalence was 72.2% in 72 examined T. ovatus according to evaluations dating from November 2016. The maximum likelihood phylogenetic tree based on small subunit rDNA sequence showed similarity with Ceratomyxa robertsthomsoni and Ceratomyxa thalassomae found in Australia. The fractal dimensions ranged between 1.68–1.89, significantly higher than those of oceanic turbulence and phytoplankton distribution. 1. Introduction Heterogeneity in the horizontal distribution of zooplankton has been recognized for many years (e.g. Hardy, 1936). The phenomenon, however, has seldom been described precisely, although zooplankton patchiness is relevant to many aspects of biological oceanography. Recent studies reveal that copepod patches do not exhibit characteristic lengths (Mackas and Boyd, 1979; Tsuda et al., 1993) and that the patterns of copepod distribution are self-similar and independent of the scale of observation (Tsuda et al., 1993). These findings suggest that copepod distributions may be fractal. Mandelbrot (1967) introduced the concept of fractals for temporally or spatially irregular phenomena which show self-similarities over a wide range of scales. Many fractal objects have been found in nature (Mandelbrot, 1982), and the theory has been applied to some ecological studies (Morse et al., 1985; Pennycuick and Kline, 1986; Dicke and Burrough, 1988; Sugihara and May, 1990; McKinney and Frederick, 1992). In the oceans, environmental turbulence itself has fractal facets in many aspects (Mandelbrot, 1982; Sreenivasan and Meneveau, 1986). -
