Regi-Stick Classic (Part 3) It was good to see so many Yamaha Club members at the recent Keyboard Cavalcade festival. I was intending to cover some ‘advanced’ stuff in part 3 - but, judged by the majority of questions asked at the festival, there is huge interest in what I would have called ‘the basics’ so... I’m making a slight change to the programme - and I hope the following will be helpful for you all... Amateur players often struggle to match suitable tunes to preset registrations. Tyros2 (and now the brand new Clavinova CVP400 series) have a handy ‘Repertoire’ feature to help with this as far as the on-board styles are concerned. Simply choose a style, hit the Repertoire button and, “voila”, a list of suitable song suggestions, taken from the Music Finder, appears in the screen. When using the Regi-stick, things are not quite so simple, because many of the styles have been edited to suit a specific song or music genre. At the Pakefield festival Regi-stick users obviously found it useful to hear the music I enjoy playing using the great Regi-stick settings. I normally use the Regi-sstick Set 2, which allows me to play using the automatic bass in the style, but with the expression pedal controlling the right-hand melody volume - although this doesn’t suit everyone. You’ll be pleased to learn, therefore, that all the following song suggestions will work equally well with any of the other Regi-stick sets. Let's take the Ballroom section first, as this is the first set to appear in the screen. The information is at such a simple level, and is about such a familiar subject, that much of the text seems of little use.

    I grew up during the heyday of pop instrumental music in the 1950s and the 1960s (there were 30 instrumental hits in the Top 40 in 1961), and I would listen to the radio faithfully for the 30 seconds before the hourly news when they would play instrumentals (however the first 45’s I bought were vocals: Bimbo by Jim Reeves in 1954, The Ballad of Davy Crockett with the flip side Farewell by Fess Parker in 1955, and Sixteen Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford in 1956). Exchanges flowed across the city’s ethnic frontier, bridging black and white youth together in an ‘oppositional’ and musical movement. While migrants enacted their Jamaican ethnicity in places where reggae was played, many non-Jamaicans satisfied a curiosity in the music of their migrant friends. This study examines the process of migration of people and music as seen from both the migrant and the host’s perspective. It is as much about black Jamaicans as it is about white Torontonians. Twenty Jamaicans and twenty non-Jamaicans were interviewed for this project. Though reggae became an expected part of Toronto’s musical vernacular, the Canadian version meant different things to different people. Indeed, sometimes the only thread that tied the varied experiences together was that Toronto was the place where reggae happened. Still, as a hybrid, reggae had rather evolved outside of place. It was a transnational musical form, constantly updated by influences traversing the ‘Black Atlantic’ in an on-going and triangular musical conversation.
