Spring 2007.Indd Spring 2007 2006 HHighlightsighlights && A Magazine For Friends of MMilestonesilestones Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center Heart of the Matter Dear Friends of Le Bonheur, ith this issue of Le Bonheur magazine, we begin a new W tradition of recognizing the essential role played by our spe- cial donors. We deeply appreciate every individual, company and organization that has supported Le Bonheur this past calendar year. Their generosity helped fund countless projects, in particular the new Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center hospital and campus. Construction of this wonderful new complex will begin next spring, and will be completed by 2011. You will read the names of many of these special friends in the following pages in our 2006 Donor Report. This issue also shares the accomplishments, achievements and mile- stones of our medical staff and associates over the past year that have made incredible differences in the lives of countless children. The future is very bright for Le Bonheur and, in turn, for the 137,000- plus children from 47 states who came through our doors last year. The reason is simple: Le Bonheur provides superb diagnostics and medical treatment along with an extra large dose of loving care. So many wonderful things are underway. Groundbreaking for our LLarryarry WWoodardoodard aandnd AAnayanaya SScottcott new hospital and medical campus will take place. Additional out- standing physicians will be added to our medical staff. More parents will become aware of the excellent care that’s available at Le Bonheur. And, best of all, more children will be healed and go on to live lives full of promise. Many of you are aware, too, that Meri Armour joined our team as the new President and Chief Executive Officer of Le Bonheur. She replaces former president Peggy Troy, who is now Chief Operating Officer at Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare. As an experienced nurse who has an MSN and an MBA, Meri brings a wealth of expertise and a passion for children’s issues. Meri relocated here from Cleveland, Ohio, where she most recently served as senior vice president and general manager of Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital, MacDonald Hospital for Women and Ireland Cancer Center. All three hospitals are part of the University Hospitals Health System/University Hospitals of Cleveland, which she joined in 1995. I hope you’ll soon have an opportunity to meet Meri. She is known for her communication skills, progressive leadership, successful fundraising and dynamic partner- ships with physicians and staff. Meri Armour So, as we approach the future guided by our new leader, we want to assure you, our valued friends, that the “new” Le Bonheur will be a highly sophisticated and comprehensive pediatric medical center ready to provide the highest level of medical excellence to the children. At the same time, we will offer specialized facilities and services for the family members of our young patients. Not only do we feel that the children deserve true excellence in their medical care, but we also feel a deep commit- ment to caring for our families. It’s amazing what can happen when we join together. Children get better or get well. Some even get a second chance at life itself. All of us at Le Bonheur thank you. Never can we say that enough. Over the years, it is slowly chipping away as a result of cars parking against it, weather, and the normal student traffic heading in and out of the buildings. For 15 years, I have annually found an excuse not to replace it. Parking lot resurfacing, renovations, and upcoming construction have been the reasons to not waste money on a “short-term” project. With the launch of our Give Back Home Campaign for Christian Brothers High School, we look to position CBHS and the Brothers to serve Memphis, deliver on our Lasallian mission and to remain a leader in a competitive private school landscape for years to come. This campaign is providing for academic programs and resources, new and updated facilities and resources to be shared by current and future students. With the completion of the first and silent phase of our Give Back Home Campaign, we saw the renovation to Heffernan Hall and our Brothers Residence, the construction of McEniry Hall to serve our STEMM program, and the capstone of the first phase in the Brothers Development Center that provides a first-class facility for our student- athletes.

Without good health, kids can’t go to school. Without good health, children become disadvantaged in their ability to grow into productive, skilled and educated adults. Without good health for all our children, the potential of our community diminishes. None of us should take the role we play in Le Bonheur’s future for granted. What each of us does individually matters. It matters to our patients and their families and it really does make a diff erence for the children and families we serve. At Le Bonheur Children’s, we are attentive to all the problems aff ecting our patients, including poverty and societal issues that adversely aff ect children’s health. Every day our staff – over 1,900 professionals and 600 physicians – gives generously of themselves by doing whatever they can for the children in our care, giving back in wonderful, magical ways, making Le Bonheur Children’s better because of their eff orts. Kids can’t get this kind of total care just anywhere. To meet their needs, they need a children’s hospital. While construction continues on our new facility, it will take all of us – our staff , donors, friends, volunteers and the community – to ensure that when the building is completed in 2010, Le Bonheur can continue to advance the causes of pediatric care throughout our community.
