Dear Friends of Le Bonheur,

Building a new Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center is one of the single most important things this city will ever do. Without good health, kids can’t go to school. Without good health, children become disadvantaged in their ability to grow into productive, skilled and educated adults. Without good health for all our children, the potential of our community diminishes. None of us should take the role we play in Le Bonheur’s future for granted. What each of us does individually matters. It matters to our patients and their families and it really does make a diff erence for the children and families we serve. At Le Bonheur Children’s, we are attentive to all the problems aff ecting our patients, including poverty and societal issues that adversely aff ect children’s health. Every day our staff – over 1,900 professionals and 600 physicians – gives generously of themselves by doing whatever they can for the children in our care, giving back in wonderful, magical ways, making Le Bonheur Children’s better because of their eff orts. Kids can’t get this kind of total care just anywhere. To meet their needs, they need a children’s hospital. While construction continues on our new facility, it will take all of us – our staff , donors, friends, volunteers and the community – to ensure that when the building is completed in 2010, Le Bonheur can continue to advance the causes of pediatric care throughout our community. It will take all of us to be successful in our quest to rank among the best pediatric hospitals in the United States. e children of this community really need us. ey need you. You are making a diff erence for them. We thank you for joining us as we change the world, one child at a time.

Warmest Regards,

Meri Armour, M.S.N., M.B.A. President and CEO

Going Green Before the FedExFamilyHouse design started, a team from Le Bonheur Children’s traveled to visit Ronald McDonald Houses across the country. In cities like Philadelphia, St. Louis and Chicago, the team talked to parents and the staff that run the homes. Sustainable design was also a key request. “Just like the new Le Bonheur Children’s, the FedExFamilyHouse will be one of the fi rst LEED–certifi ed children’s hospital family facilities in the country,” Rosenbaum says. Th ree factors were taken into consideration when designing the sustainable FedExFamilyHouse: environmental and energy effi ciency, economic effi ciency and community focus/social responsibility. Some of the green elements include energy– effi cient heating and air, use of recycled materials, reduced energy consumption and native plants and effi cient irrigation. Emma LaCroix

The Diagnosis Seven-year-old Emma LaCroix is a “girlie girl.” She loves pink, purple and purses. Horseback riding is her thing. When it comes to Disney World, she’d rather meet a princess than Mickey or Minnie and she got that chance last year on her 7th birthday. Emma was born with mitochondrial disease, a rare genetic disorder that causes damage to the brain, muscles, kidneys and the endocrine and respiratory systems. She has a very complex form of the disease, and as a result, she has a loss of motor control, gastrointestinal disorders, swallowing diffi culty, poor growth, respiratory complications, seizures and is susceptible to infections. As the only child of Karrie and Jason LaCroix, Emma was three months old before they noticed any developmental delays in their baby. At the time, they were living in South Bend, Indiana. After being evaluated at two diff erent medical facilities near their home, Emma was fi nally referred to a mitochondrial disease specialist who was located in Atlanta. After two days of testing, Emma’s diagnosis was confi rmed. Her parents were told Emma’s prognosis was unknown and that there was no cure for her disease.

The Road to Memphis Like most parents with a special-needs child, Karrie and Jason sought the support of their loved ones and decided to return to Memphis, where Jason had grown up, to be with his family. His parents, Anita “Gayle” and Robert “Bob” Bennett had recently returned here for Bob’s job as chief learning offi cer and vice president of Human Resources at FedEx Corporation. Jason also found work as a FedEx customer-information services manager in tactical planning and engineering. Emma with her father, Jason, and grandfather, Bob Bennett Since they moved here in 2004, Emma has been cared for by physicians at Le Bonheur www.lebonheur.org Children’s. Th e added expense incurred Disney World on her 7th from staying in a hotel becomes birthday. She had lunch with another burden. Scheduled to open in 2010, Emma with her mother, Karrie the FedExFamilyHouse will provide a place for the families of patients, like Emma, who live outside of Memphis a place to stay just across the street from the new hospital. “We all want the best for our children,” says Karrie. “We know that we are taking Emma to the best possible place that we can. It will be amazing to have the FedExFamilyHouse available for Le Bonheur’s out-of-town families,” Karrie says. “Here they are, in a strange city with no idea where to stay. It will be a nice place for them to get some sleep and have a warm meal. It will meet their basic needs so they can stay strong to meet their child’s needs when they go home.” ■

While Hannah Durham and her father, Rick, were driving from their home in Baldwyn, Miss. to Tupelo to attend the 2008 Father/Daughter Gumtree Ball to benefi t Le Bonheur Children’s, Hannah asked him why he took her to the ball every year. “Some people cannot aff ord the cost of doctors when their child is sick,” Rick replied. “When we buy a ticket to attend the ball, the money goes to help Le Bonheur give kids the best medical care possible.” e fundraiser for Le Bonheur Children’s is presented annually by the Gumtree TWIGS. e 2008 event was the third consecutive ball that the Durham duo attended. Hannah, 9, had heard of Bill “Road Kill Bill” Hughes Le Bonheur Children’s and knew that her father participated for several years in a softball tournament to and Hannah Durham benefi t the hospital but there was something about his answer that struck a chord. She decided right then, on the way to the dance, to do something special for Le Bonheur’s kids on her own. With help from Connie Haygood, regional representative for Le Bonheur Children’s, Hannah became a Change Wizard for the 2008 Le Bonheur Radiothon in Tupelo. Sponsored by Wizard 106.7, the Change Wizard program encourages collecting change for contributions to Le Bonheur Children’s during the radiothon promotional period. Hannah contacted stores in her hometown to place Change Wizard collection canisters at checkout registers. For two weeks, she kept close tabs on eight containers, logging the dates and amount collected at each location. Additionally, during the fi rst home game of the Baldwyn Bearcats football season, Hannah handed out cookbooks and wrist bands for donations to Le Bonheur Children’s. Her goal was $300. When Rick drove Hannah to the Wizard radio station in Tupelo to present her donation live-on-the- air, the amount she raised had reached $606. “I hope this money helps save a kid’s life,” Hannah told Bill “Road Kill Bill” Hughes and Kelli Karlson, the morning deejays on Wizard 106. “I am so proud of her,” Rick said. “Just seeing her at such a young age wanting to help other kids and their families was reward enough,” he added, as tears rolled down his cheeks. “She learned a very important life lesson: giving back when you are blessed so others may have a chance at new beginnings.” Caring e 2009 evening of dancing, refreshments and activities for dads and their daughters will be held June 27 at the Tupelo Furniture Market. For information, contact Connie Haygood at (662) 348-5505 or e-mail for Kids [email protected]. ■ – By Julia Adames
