And, it took off in a big way! Two years ago, my perfectionist husband gifted me one for my birthday, and my daughter painted it right away! And, then I waited... :-) It was finally installed today! I am beyond excited. Our first book was taken within minutes, by these wonderful neighbour kids up the street in exchange for Nancy Close 1626 7208 Kananaskis Drive SW Calgary AB two of their lovely novels. This Little free library is located at the Capitol Hill Park. Built at a workshop hosted by Councillor Druh Farrell, this little free library was designed and painted by community resident and illustrator Carolyn Fisher. It is a small addition to the revitalization of this inner city park and is maintained by the Carolyn Fisher 5928 1531 21 Avenue NW Calgary AB Capitol Hill Community Association. We assisted one of the local city Councillors in constructing 30 LFL for Calgary Joe Starkman 5926 28 Sterling Spring Cres Calgary AB communities. This is one of them. From the yearly book fair, to frequent trips to the local library we have always been aware of Kathi's love of reading. For her most recent birthday we bought her this little library so that she could share her love of books, learning, and adventure with others in our neighborhood. -

The Credit Valley Railway (CVR) BACKGROUND in 1849, the Province of Canada Passed Loan Interest Legislation That Triggered Canada’S Railway Building Boom
34 The Credit Valley Railway (CVR) BACKGROUND In 1849, the Province of Canada passed loan interest legislation that triggered Canada’s railway building boom. Unfortunately, in 1851 the Province of Canada enacted further, inter alia, to create a Board of Railway Commis- sioners, one of whose duties was to administer the 1849 loan interest guarantee. The Board required that to obtain the loan interest guarantee benefit, any railway had to build to the 5ft 6in gauge, which came to be known as the "Provincial" or "Broad" Gauge. During this “broad gauge” era of railway development in Upper Canada from 1850 to 1870, one George Laidlaw rose to prominence as an advocate of the economies of the narrow gauge. An emigrant from Scotland, he obtained a position with the Toronto distillery firm of Gooderham & Worts, and persuaded his employers to invest in the nar- row gauge concept in sponsoring feeder lines for their business. Accordingly on March 4, 1868, the Toronto Grey & Bruce (TG&B) and the Toronto & Nipissing (T&N) Railways were chartered to build to the northwest and the north- east of Toronto. By 1865, Laidlaw had become a grain merchant in his own right, and his passion for transportation issues (the benefits of the narrow gauge system in particular) and his involvement with railway projects had come to dominate his career. After inception of the TG&B and the T&N, Laidlaw also became a moving force in the Credit Valley and the Victoria Railways. While the disadvantages of the narrow gauge system had not yet become appar- ent, in the meantime, the 5’6” “Provincial Gauge” was falling economically and politically out of favour. -

‘TORONTO HAS NO HISTORY!’ INDIGENEITY, SETTLER COLONIALISM AND HISTORICAL MEMORY IN CANADA’S LARGEST CITY By Victoria Jane Freeman A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto ©Copyright by Victoria Jane Freeman 2010 ABSTRACT ‘TORONTO HAS NO HISTORY!’ ABSTRACT ‘TORONTO HAS NO HISTORY!’ INDIGENEITY, SETTLER COLONIALISM AND HISTORICAL MEMORY IN CANADA’S LARGEST CITY Doctor of Philosophy 2010 Victoria Jane Freeman Graduate Department of History University of Toronto The Indigenous past is largely absent from settler representations of the history of the city of Toronto, Canada. Nineteenth and twentieth century historical chroniclers often downplayed the historic presence of the Mississaugas and their Indigenous predecessors by drawing on doctrines of terra nullius , ignoring the significance of the Toronto Purchase, and changing the city’s foundational story from the establishment of York in 1793 to the incorporation of the City of Toronto in 1834. These chroniclers usually assumed that “real Indians” and urban life were inimical. Often their representations implied that local Indigenous peoples had no significant history and thus the region had little or no history before the arrival of Europeans. Alternatively, narratives of ethical settler indigenization positioned the Indigenous past as the uncivilized starting point in a monological European theory of historical development. i i iii In many civic discourses, the city stood in for the nation as a symbol of its future, and national history stood in for the region’s local history. The national replaced ‘the Indigenous’ in an ideological process that peaked between the 1880s and the 1930s. -
World Heritage Site – Kalka Shimla Railway an Introduction
WORLD HERITAGE SITE – KALKA SHIMLA RAILWAY AN INTRODUCTION Ambala Division is the proud custodian of “WORLD HERITAGE SITE-KALKA SHIMLA RAILWAY”. The heritage status to KSR was awarded on 7th July, 2008 by UNESCO. Shimla (then spelt Simla) was settled by the British shortly after the first Anglo- Gurkha war and is located at 7,116 feet(2,169m) in the foothills of the Himalaya. By the 1830s, Shimla had already developed as a major base for the British. It became the summer capital of British India in 1864, and also the Headquarters of the British army in India. The Kalka- Shimla Railway was built to connect Shimla, the summer capital of India during the British Raj, with the Indian rail system. “The Guinness Book of Rail facts & feats” records Kalka Shimla Railways as the greatest narrow gauge engineering in India. It is indeed true, construction of 103 tunnels (102 Existing) aggregating five miles and over 800 bridge in three years, that too in rough and hostile terrain was not an easy task. The Historic, approximate 111 years old KLK-SML Railway line which was opened for public traffic on 9th Nov.1903, became UNESCO Declared world Heritage Railway line, when it was conferred Heritage status on 10th July 2008 & listed under “Mountain Railways of India”. The idea of a Railway line to Shimla dates back to the introduction of Railways in India. It is said that in The DELHI GAZETTE, a correspondent in November, 1847 sketched the route of railway to Shimla with the estimates of the traffic returns etc in appropriate style. -

The Toronto Ghosts & Hauntings Research Society Present s… About This Document: Since early October of 1997, The Toronto Ghosts and Hauntings Research Society has been collecting Toronto’s ghostly legends and lore for our website and sharing the information with anyone with an interest in things that go bump in the night… or day… or any time, really. If it’s ghostly in nature, we try to stay on top of it. One of the more popular things for a person with a passion for all things spooky is to do a “ghost tour”… which is something that our group has never really offered and never planned to do… but it is something we get countless requests about especially during the Hallowe’en season. Although we appreciate and understand the value of a good guided ghost tour for both the theatrical qualities and for a fun story telling time and as such, we are happy to send people in Toronto to Richard Fiennes-Clinton at Muddy York Walking Tours (who offers the more theatrical tours focusing on ghosts and history, see Image Above Courtesy of Toronto Tourism www.muddyyorktours.com) We do also understand that at Hallowe’en, these types of tours can Self Guided Walking Tour of fill up quickly and leave people in the lurch. Acknowledgments The site of Exhibition Place has had a long tradition as a gathering place. Given its location on the water, these lands would have attracted Indigenous populations before recorded history. We acknowledge that the land occupied by Exhibition Place is the traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples and is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples. We also acknowledge that Toronto is covered by Treaty 13 with the Mississaugas of the Credit, and the Williams Treaties signed with multiple Mississaugas and Chippewa bands. Figure 1. Railway History Chronology
St. Thomas Railway History Chronology 1834 - The plan for the Great Western Railway (GWR) is conceived. An economic depression delays implementation for several years. 23 October 1847 - Sod-turning commences for the GWR. It becomes the largest system in Southwestern Ontario. 1850s - Surveying for railway lines is conducted in the St. Thomas area by different railroad companies. Among those reported in the St. Thomas Weekly Dispatch are routes to Simcoe and Amherstburg. 1854 - Citizens of St. Thomas are disappointed that the GWR decided to build through London from Windsor to Niagara Falls instead of St. Thomas. St. Thomas’s leading citizens had been campaigning for years for a railway. 1856 - The London and Port Stanley Railway (L&PS) is inaugurated. Though it was initially supported by St. Thomas, it turned out to be a financial disaster, as St. Thomas merchants lost customers to London. The city purchased shares in the company for $125,000.00 a piece and later sold them to the City of London, who owned the line, for $25,000.00 per share. 1868 - The Erie and Niagara Extension Railway is chartered and the following year it is renamed the Canada Southern Railway (CASO). Late 1860’s - William A. Thomson rallies support for the CASO run between Amherstburg and Fort Erie to connect to St. Thomas. He is successful. 1871 - The CASO Station is built in anticipation of the railroad’s arrival the following year. It still stands today. 1872- The GWR, afraid of losing traffic to the CASO, constructed a rival St. Thomas to Glencoe line, thereby affording St.
