The release includes the previously teased "Big Wheels" and "Georgia," which arrived with a music video last night, as well as the never-before heard track "Joy Ride." Produced by Jack Antonoff and Romil Hemnani, these three songs find Kevin embarking on a sonic journey of self-discovery in real-time, reflecting on the events of the past few years and confronting the reality of where he sees himself fitting into the American narrative. On Monday, Abstract cryptically teased what appears to be three release dates for ARIZONA baby on social media. ARIZONA baby is the first solo material from Abstract since his 2017 sophomore album American Boyfriend and the first new BROCKHAMPTON material after their relentless two-year run in which they released 4 albums and signed with RCA Records. In September 2018 Iridescence, their first album for RCA Records, debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 and Hip-Hop/R&B charts. Some artists may glorify that, but other artists either decry it or offer it as a tragic reality. In hip-hop trends build off of music and music builds off of trends in a cyclical manner.

Oregon Undergraduate Research Journal 13.1 (2018) ISSN: 2160-617X (online) blogs.uoregon.edu/ourj Spitting Bars and Subverting Heteronormativity: An Analysis of Frank Ocean and Tyler, the Creator’s Departures from Heteronormativity, Traditional Concepts of Masculinity, and the Gender Binary Lizzy Elkins*, International Studies and Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies ABSTRACT This paper seeks to investigate an emerging movement of rap and pop artists who actively subvert structures of the gender binary and heteronormativity through their music. The main artists considered in this research are pop/rap/R&B artist Frank Ocean and rap artist Tyler, the Creator, both of whom have claimed fame relatively recently. Artists like Ocean and Tyler make intentional departures from heteronormativity and the gender binary, combat concepts such as ‘toxic masculinity’, and hint at the possibilities for normalization and destigmatization of straying from the gender binary through lyrics, metaphysical expressions, physical embodiments of gender, expression of fluid/non-heteronormative sexualities, and disregard for labels in their sexual and gendered identities. I will discuss the history and context around music as an agent for social change and address privileging of the black heterosexual cisgender man as the central voice to pop/rap/R&B in the following research. This project will draw on Beauvoirian philosophy regarding gender as well as contemporary sources of media like Genius, record sale statistics, and album lyrics. By illustrating and evaluating how these artists subvert traditional concepts of gender and sexuality, I hope to also shine a light on how their music, which reaches millions of people who are less aware of or accepting of gayness, catalyzes social change and is significant in this current political moment, which is an era of increasing public tolerance of queer ideas and less binary gender expression.

Volume 9 Issue 1 (2020) AP Research BROCKHAMPTON: Social Advocacy and Diversity in Rap Music Ndidi Opara1 1Lake Washington High School, Kirkland, WA, USA ABSTRACT BROCKHAMPTON is a diverse, multiracial rap group that has recently garnered rapidly increasing popularity and influence in the rap industry. Because of this, I wanted to determine if the popularity of the group’s SATURATION trilogy was affected by the content matter they addressed and how that intersected with the American color line in music marketing. With the research question, “To what extent does the race of a BROCKHAMPTON member and the advocacy they utilize, whether it be pro-social or anti-social advocacy examined through the usage of corresponding social themes, influence the popularity of a given song from BROCKHAMPTON’s SATURATION trilogy?”, this study found that it was influenced to a minor extent, with no strong correlation found between race and social themes dis- cussed, or between popularity and the dominant thematic category of a song. Context I have always struggled with the stigma on that rap is an aggressive, violent, and rageful genre. When I listen to rap, I hear social themes and messages that are underneath the sound of the music. However, I have realized that people often do not hear the same messages I do. I also realized that people do not choose to interpret rap music the same way I do. I realized that I had forgot that the perception of rap as a multi-layered genre is not one that often comes to the untrained ear. Along with this, I noticed that media and the academic world often discards the positive, advocating side of Hip-Hop.
