Brussels PRINTED FOR MELINE, CANS A.ND C"., EOILEVARD DE WATERLOO, Zi. M DCCC XXXIX. MR V. un:ve PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION. To assist in the detection of spurious and the correction of inaccu- rate pedigrees, is one of the purposes of the present publication, in which respect the first Volume has been of acknowledged utility. The two together, it is hoped, will form a comprehensive and tole- rably correct Register of Pedigrees. It will be observed that some of the Mares which appeared in the last Supplement (whereof this is a republication and continua- tion) stand as they did there, i. e. without any additions to their produce since 1813 or 1814. — It has been ascertained that several of them were about that time sold by public auction, and as all attempts to trace them have failed, the probability is that they have either been converted to some other use, or been sent abroad. If any proof were wanting of the superiority of the English breed of horses over that of every other country, it might be found in the avidity with which they are sought by Foreigners. The exportation of them to Russia, France, Germany, etc. for the last five years has been so considerable, as to render it an object of some importance in a commercial point of view.

“POOR SAVAGES AND CHURLISH HERETICS”: THE JESUIT MISSION TO CANADA AND THE FRENCH WARS OF RELIGION, 1540-1635 Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Joseph R. Wachtel, M.A. Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2013 Dissertation Committee: Professor Alan Gallay, Adviser Professor Dale K. Van Kley Professor John L. Brooke Copyright by Joseph R. Wachtel 2013 Abstract My dissertation connects the Jesuit missions in Canada to the global Jesuit missionary project in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries by exploring the impact of French religious politics on the organizing of the first Canadian mission, established at Port Royal, Acadia, in 1611. After the Wars of Religion, Gallican Catholics blamed the Society for the violence between French Catholics and Protestants, portraying Jesuits as underhanded usurpers of royal authority in the name of the Pope—even accusing the priests of advocating regicide. As a result, both Port Royal’s settlers and its proprietor, Jean de Poutrincourt, never trusted the missionaries, and the mission collapsed within two years. After Virginia pirates destroyed Port Royal, Poutrincourt drew upon popular anti- Jesuit stereotypes to blame the Jesuits for conspiring with the English. Father Pierre Biard, one of the missionaries, responded with his 1616 Relation de la Nouvelle France, which described Port Royal’s Indians and narrated the Jesuits’ adventures in North America, but served primarily as a defense of their enterprise. Religio-political infighting profoundly influenced the interaction between Indians and Europeans in the earliest years of Canadian settlement.

  • Letter to Court of Appeals Requesting Hearing Re Bar Exam
Hon. Janet DiFiore July 13, 2020 Chief Judge Hon. Michael Garcia Associate Judge The New York Court of Appeals 20 Eagle Street Albany, New York 12207 CC: New York Board of Law Examiners Dear Chief Judge DiFiore and Judge Garcia, We are a coalition of recent law school graduates, practitioners, legal academics, and other interested members of the legal community who write to respectfully request a hearing before the Court to discuss its planned administration of the September bar exam. Recent developments suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic will pose a serious threat to the health of examinees, exam proctors, and the general public in September. The time is ripe for a collaborative discussion of reasonable alternatives to in-person examination. We ask that the Court act swiftly to grant our request for a hearing. As the Court knows, COVID-19 has caused an unprecedented public health crisis, leaving no individual or institution unaffected. The State of New York has suffered greatly, and the need for newly licensed attorneys in our communities has only been compounded by the outbreak. In addition to the general suffering that COVID-19 has wreaked—illness, death, and overwhelming mental stress—law graduates face downstream consequences of the virus, including an economic downturn, high unemployment rates, lack of childcare, and uncertain living situations and access to health insurance.1 COVID-19 has disproportionately impacted Black and Latinx communities in New York2 and throughout the country.3 Further, a national movement for Black lives has led many examinees to devote time and energy to racial justice advocacy.

  • BROODMARE ANALYSIS REPORT a Broodmare’S Nicking Analysis with up to 50 Potential Stallions
COMPILED SPECIFICALLY FOR Tempo BROODMARE ANALYSIS REPORT A broodmare’s nicking analysis with up to 50 potential stallions Copyright © 2011 The Jockey Club Information Systems, Inc. BROODMARE ANALYSIS REPORT TrueNicks: An Explanation Nicks in History Compatibilities between stallions from one sire line with mares of another sire line has helped shape the breed since the Eclipse/Herod cross of the late 18th century. These successful crosses, called nicks, have impacted Thoroughbred development through such examples as Hermit/Stockwell, Lexington/Glencoe, Bend Or/Macaroni, and Phalaris/Chaucer. In the modern era, the prolific Mr. Prospector/Northern Dancer cross has produced outstanding racehorses and sires such as Kingmambo, Distorted Humor, and Elusive Quality. Fast-Forward to the 21st Century Computer databases have made it possible to measure and rate nicks, giving rise to a commercial market for such statistics. The first nick ratings offered to the public, though popular, were compromised by incomplete data and yielded results based on hypothetical rather than actual opportunity. This statistical gap was the impetus behind the development of TrueNicks. A Statistically Valid Approach Unlike other ratings that are calculated based on hypothetical opportunity within a limited group of horses, TrueNicks references the international database of The Jockey Club—the world’s most complete record of Thoroughbreds and their performance—to produce a sophisticated rating based on all starters and stakes winners on a given cross. The Statistics The TrueNicks rating is derived from two statistical elements: the Sire Improvement Index (SII) and the Broodmare Sire Improvement Index (BSII). Each figure compares the percentage of progeny stakes winners to starters.
