A report to constituents in Rockingham County refers to revised codes, courts, surplus revenue, Rayner resol­ ution, railroad construction, swamp drainage, and the -Cape Fear Bank. A militia order of 1840 is addressed to "Colonel" Reid. Letters from urge Reid to run for Congress ( 1841 ) and also illuminate the rift within the Democratic Party ( 1842 ).

·Letters from constituents ( 1844~1848 ), frequently Democratic post­ masters in his congressional· district ( Rockingham, Caswell, Ashe, Wilkes, Surry, and· Stokes counties ), in addition to reporting on local polit­ .ical scene, refer to Revolutionary War pensions and bounties, public lands, annexation of Texas, war with Mexico, protective tariff, Oregon boundary, and war with England. Description: David Settle Reid (1813-1891) was postmaster of Reidsville (1829~1835), admitted to the bar (1833), state senator (1836-1842), U.S. Representative (1844-1848), governor (1851-1854), U. s. Senator (1854-1859), delegate to peace conference in Washington (1861), member sesession convention (1861) and constitutional convention (1875). See Dictionary of American Biography, XV, p. 476.

There are thirty-two letters and nine land papers (deeds, survey, plats, promissory notes) for land (700 acres) purchased by Thomas Settle in 1850, as well as a single· deed from John Bridgman to Jonathan Haines, Surry· county, 1808. The letters are concerned with Democratic politics, both state and national; post office problem; Civil War (recommendation for drill master, bacon allotment for Rockingham Co. to quartermaster, concentration of troops in Virginia, 1864), office seeking, requests for recommendations, and letters from former North Carolina residents in Kentucky, .California, and Florida.

Outstanding items are a letter from Thomas Ruffin of Alamance thanking three members of congress for their congratula~tions ori his appointment as chief justice in 1858 (age 71); list of furniture and household goods purchased for the Executive Mansion by Governor Reid, 1851-1854; items (lithograph, certificate, i;.,vitation) for. the Washington Monument, 1858, n.d.; and for· the Smithsonian Institution (program of organization, 1847 ,'and proceedings of a national convention of ar.tists at the Smithsonian in 1858). Also a Congressional Chart, 1789-1861, published by the Department of the Interior showing the beginning and length of each session, speakers of the house, number of days in session, place of meeting, documents (annals of congress and sfatutes at large), and historical events--sent to Reid by John Hill Wheeler. ·

Miscellaneous items are a fragmentary set of legal lectures, n.d.; ·invitations to Governor Thomas Jarvis's inaugural ball, 1881, and commence­ ment at the University. of North Carolina, 1879; calling cards (22)--apparently from Reid's visitors in·Washington, D.C.; and form letter to trustees of the University re lack of funds and resignation of D. F. Swain, 1867.
