We Will Rock You – Queen – Notes / We Will Rock You – Queen – Notes / ° Activity types: Discussion, phonetics, listening for specific words, opposites, gap fill. ° Level: Elementary / Pre-Intermediate ° Notes: This is one of Queen’s best known songs, taken from their 1977 album News Of The World. Written by guitarist Brian May, the song is mostly a cappella with only stomping and clapping for the rhythm – the final 30 seconds is a guitar solo. There is a video of this activity from the Tune Into English Roadshow on www.tuneintoenglish.com. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ 1. Ask students who their favourite band is. Do they know the name of the members? What (if any!) instruments do they play? Give them 30 seconds to write down the names of as many musical instruments as they can. 2. Feedback. They will almost certainly pronounce the bass incorrectly as /bæs/ - point out that /bæs/ is in fact a fish! Can they imagine their favourite bassist playing a spigola ?! The instrument is the /beɪs/. (They may also have problems with the word guitar, note that in English the second syllable is stressed). 3. Allow them one minute to write as many words as they can that rhyme with the word bass (/beɪs/). 4. Tell students that they will hear three words pronounced /-eɪs/ in the next song. Play the first verse of the song, can they identify them? 5. Feedback on the students’ lists and give each student a copy of the folded worksheet. Point out the final –ce spelling of most words. 6. Play the first verse of the song again, what are the three rhyming words? Key: face, disgrace, place 7. Feedback, then ask them to unfold the worksheet and complete the gaps. 8. Correct in open class, play the complete song and sing together! This worksheet is to be used for educational purposes only Activity © Tune into English 2015 – www.tuneintoenglish.com ! • We Will Rock You”
“We Will Rock You” By Queen and Ben Elton At the Hippodrome Theatre through October 20 By Princess Appau WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS When one walks into the Hippodrome Theatre to view “We Will Rock You,” the common expectation is a compilation of classic rock and roll music held together by a simple plot. This jukebox musical, however, surpasses those expectations by entwining a powerful plot with clever updating of the original 2002 musical by Queen and Ben Elton. The playwright Elton has surrounded Queen’s songs with a plot that highlights the familiar conflict of our era: youths being sycophants to technology. This comic method is not only the key to the show’s success but also the antidote to any fear that the future could become this. The futuristic storyline is connected to many of Queen’s lyrics that foreshadow the youthful infatuation with technology and the monotonous lifestyle that results. This approach is emphasized by the use of a projector displaying programmed visuals of a futuristic setting throughout the show. The opening scene transitions into the Queen song “Radio Gaga,” which further affirms this theme. The scene includes a large projection of hundreds of youth, clones to the cast performing on stage. The human cast and virtual cast are clothed alike in identical white tops and shorts or skirts; they sing and dance in sublime unison, defining the setting of the show and foreshadowing the plot. Unlike most jukebox musicals the plot is not a biographical story of the performers whose music is featured. “We Will Rock You” is set 300 years in the future on the iPlanet when individuality and creativity are shunned and conformity reigns.

Queen Group 3: Jennifer Day, Xander Jarnow, Duke McGhee, Shelby Stehn, Adam Vandenhouten, Tyler Kallevig Reasons Why We Chose Queen: There are a lot of reasons that we, as a group, decided to do our project on Queen. Queen is an extremely well-known band across multiple generations, so it is an artist that we can talk to almost anyone anywhere about. Additionally, they were an influence to many artists after them. Finally, they released over 15 albums that showed a very impressive musical range and an awe-inspiring amount of talent. Queen: Overview Queen was one of the most popular and successful rock groups during the 1970s and 80s, with a very unique, experimental style and sound, Queen has remained one of the best selling artists of all time. The band began its formation in 1967, when the guitarist Brian May and the drummer Roger Taylor joined with Tim Staffell to form a rock group named Smile. When Tim Staffell left the group, May and Taylor joined forces with Freddie Mercury and a bass player named John Deacon, resulting in the core version of the band in 1970. Queen was famous for bright, glam, “pomp-rock” and put on energetic shows. Freddie Mercury in particular was known for his flamboyant style. Their sound was a very produced and incorporated elements of glam rock, heavy metal, hard rock, and harmony. After the tragic death of Freddie Mercury the band added new members and continued performing Even today their songs remain popular, for example, “We Are the Champions,” “Another One Bites the Dust,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and “We Will Rock You” are still played often.

TCNJ JOURNAL OF STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP VOLUME XIV APRIL 2012 HETEROSEXUAL ANDROGYNY, QUEER HYPERMASCULINITY, AND HETERONORMATIVE INFLUENCE IN THE MUSIC OF FREDDIE MERCURY AND QUEEN Author: Rishi Malhotra Faculty Sponsor: Wayne Heisler, Department of Music ABSTRACT AND INTRODUCTION In a musical career that spanned two decades, Freddie Mercury served as lead vocalist and chief songwriter for the rock band, Queen. Initially regarded as a glam-metal outfit, they later experimented with more eclectic musical styles, notably the rock-opera fusion that characterized Mercury‟s widely successful composition, “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Mercury‟s use of imagery in live performances and music videos helped to shape responses to his lyrics and music. His change in appearance from androgynous, heterosexual rock star to “gay macho clone” led many to speculate that he was homosexual, although he never disclosed his orientation until shortly before his death. His protean appearance contrasted with his lyrical and musical consistency and provided alternative avenues for interpreting his music beyond the scope of heteronormativity. Many songs that were initially construed as reflecting his assumed heterosexuality were later interpreted as expressions of his homosexuality. Mercury has retained a legacy amongst admirers of differing sexual orientations, from members of the gay community during the early years of the AIDS epidemic to sports fans in stadiums around the world. Heteronormativity, according to Judith Butler, assumes heterosexuality as the norm, and deviation from heterosexuality as unnatural or abnormal. The apparent tendency to avoid decentralization of sexual identities and to default to heteronormative viewpoints is evident in the rock and pop music of Freddie Mercury and Queen.

  • Copy of EPQ: Formal Essay
How Queer Identities Have Progressed Within the Music Industry History of queer identity within the music industry The recent trend towards more visibility in the music industry is enigmatic of a larger trend as the pride movement gained momentum. The Stonewall Riots of 1969 marked a turning point in queer identity, demanding rights and protection against police brutality - paticularly towards gay men and trans women of colour. The Stonewall Riots launched queer identity into the public mainstream, and for the first time queer idenity was not only legalised in the UK but also visible. This started in the rock scene of the 1970s, a genre characterised by it’s defiance of the mainstream. Naturally in such a unbashidely indivalidsitic environment like rock, queer idenity flourished, although still when it reached mainstream it had to be censored behind metaphors and slights of hand. The most famous example of rock’s queer sexuality was Queen, fronted by queer icon Freddie Mercury, although the full extent of his queer idenitity within his music is often debated. One popular interpretation of Bohemian Rhapsody, Queen’s three part rock ballad, is that it’s a song about a gay or queer man coming out, being rejected, and then coming into his own – not proud in spite of their sexuality, but because of it. As comedian Guy Branum wrote in his memoir My Life As a Goddess, later posted to pitchfork in 2018, “Bohemian Rhapsody is a breakup song for your mum,”1 in an article when he links his own fraught coming out with his parents to the murder depicted in the song.
