sn 0 SPRING 2006 music at seminary Message from the Metropolitan Dearly Beloved in Christ, Every year, Orthodox Christian men and women hear the Lord’s call to study theology at our seminaries. The student of theology must hear and obey the Lord’s words: Whoever would be first among you must be your slave (Matthew 20:27). Faithful service as a choir director, teacher, deacon, priest, or bishop requires emulation of the Lord and study of His Word. The life of the sn Church through history provides many lessons for Christians of the twenty-first century. To faithfully serve Christ today requires that we study the lives of our fathers in the faith, the per- secutions the Church has endured in the name of Christ, and the triumphs of the truth of the Gospel in the face of great resistance. Martin Paluch The Dean of St Vladimir’s Seminary has been guiding our seminarians through the study of the Church’s his- tory as a lay professor for many years. I am grateful to the Lord that I was able to ordain John Erickson to the Holy Diaconate on the feast of the Three Holy Hierarchs, the patrons of the seminary’s chapel, and to the Holy Priesthood on May 7, 2006. Father John is now called to renewed service to God’s people at the Holy Table. Please join me in fervent prayer for Father John in his ministry as a professor, as Dean of St Vladimir’s, and as a servant of the Lord. October 21 G.† Our Ven. Father Hilarion the Great He was born in Palestine, near Gaza City, studied the sciences and was baptized in Alexandria. When he was 15 years old, Hilarion heard about Ven. Anthony the Great and admiring "Anthony's spiritually divine, virtuous way of life" went to him. Having returned home with a blessing from Ven. Anthony, Hilarion found that his parents died and, "despising all worldly pleasures", distributed all his remaining inherited estate to the poor and in a certain deserted place was devoted entirely to prayer and abstinence. St. Hilarion struggled a lot with unclean thoughts, who confused his mind and inflamed his body; but he exhausted his body with work and drove away these thoughts by prayer and meditation on God. The holy hermit suffered much from demons and more than once while standing in prayer heard the crying of children, sobbing of women, roaring of lions and other wild animals, awful noises and confusion presented by the demons. But he did not fear the "demonic traps" and through fervent prayer conquered the "gloomy enemy powers". Once, robbers set upon the holy ascetic, but he by the power of his word convinced them to leave their vice and to lead a good life. Soon all of Palestine heard about the holy hermit's life and many began to come to him for healing of body and soul, but others wished to save their soul under his direction. With his blessing many monasteries were built in Palestine, and going from one monastery to another, he established a strict ascetic paradigm of life in them, having become the same kind of trainer for those seeking salvation in Palestine as Ven.

The purpose of this competition was to enhance the kids’ talents. This year, the theme of the competition was “The Paper World”. Each participant was required to present a piece of art using paper either by drawing, making shapes or using paper mache. Fady enjoyed making paper shapes so he was very excited to participate. Fady decided to make a model of a city using paper. He dreamed of living in a perfect city. He wanted to call it “The City of Virtues”. Because Fady’s dad was an architect, he helped him draw a plan for the city. Fady started to follow exactly what was on the drawing his dad made. Two weeks later, Fady completed his model for “The City of Virtues.” The highlights of his city included: the Virtues Street, the Values Island, the River of Life, the Paradise of Saints, the Tree of Love and the Tree of Peace. At the centre of the city there was a High Tower where the Wiseman lived.

  • ABSTRACT the Apostolic Tradition in the Ecclesiastical Histories Of
ABSTRACT The Apostolic Tradition in the Ecclesiastical Histories of Socrates, Sozomen, and Theodoret Scott A. Rushing, Ph.D. Mentor: Daniel H. Williams, Ph.D. This dissertation analyzes the transposition of the apostolic tradition in the fifth-century ecclesiastical histories of Socrates, Sozomen, and Theodoret. In the early patristic era, the apostolic tradition was defined as the transmission of the apostles’ teachings through the forms of Scripture, the rule of faith, and episcopal succession. Early Christians, e.g., Irenaeus, Tertullian, and Origen, believed that these channels preserved the original apostolic doctrines, and that the Church had faithfully handed them to successive generations. The Greek historians located the quintessence of the apostolic tradition through these traditional channels. However, the content of the tradition became transposed as a result of three historical movements during the fourth century: (1) Constantine inaugurated an era of Christian emperors, (2) the Council of Nicaea promulgated a creed in 325 A.D., and (3) monasticism emerged as a counter-cultural movement. Due to the confluence of these sweeping historical developments, the historians assumed the Nicene creed, the monastics, and Christian emperors into their taxonomy of the apostolic tradition. For reasons that crystallize long after Nicaea, the historians concluded that pro-Nicene theology epitomized the apostolic message. They accepted the introduction of new vocabulary, e.g. homoousios, as the standard of orthodoxy. In addition, the historians commended the pro- Nicene monastics and emperors as orthodox exemplars responsible for defending the apostolic tradition against the attacks of heretical enemies. The second chapter of this dissertation surveys the development of the apostolic tradition.

James Parnell 575 Scarsdale Road Yonkers, NY 10707 Printed in the United States of America First Printing, 2013 ABSTRACT After over ten years of war (not to mention the numerous wars and conflicts that stretch back over fifty years), there is growing concern about the frighteningly high number of soldiers and veterans who develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the United States. Massive spikes in the rate of suicides, sexual assaults, fratricides, and homicides among service members and veterans are symptomatic of a deeper problem: spiritual trauma. This reality is also referred to in terms of “moral injuries” or “soul wounds.” Numerous mental health professionals and specialists in related fields have begun advocating for rites of return and reintegration for soldiers and veterans.

December 11 E. Our Venerable Father Daniel the Stylite Born in Samosata, Mesopotamia, he left for a certain monastery to practice asceticism at 13 years of age where he soon surprised the strict ascetics by his zealousness for prayer and diligence. Then he visited the Ven. Simeon the Stylite (see Sept. 1) and with his blessing left for a hermitage in Thrace where he climbed on a pillar about the year 459. Here he “underwent all ferocity”, “both bitterly cold winters and the heat of the sun, and the rottenness of flesh, and from it were worms of animosity”. His holy way of life frequently led the Emperors Leo and Zeno to him for the reception of his blessing and the hearing of his prophecy, always with justified events. Glorified by the gift of wonderworking and insight, St. Daniel died in the year 480. Kontakion, tone 8 Having ascended the pillar like a radiant star, O blessed One, You illumined the world with your venerable deeds, And dispelled the darkness of deception, O Father, Therefore we beseech you: Shine forth even now the never setting light of understanding Into the hearts of your servants Ven. Luke, the new Stylite A warrior, miraculously saved from death in battle with the Bulgars, he left the vain world and accepted monasticism. Ordained a presbyter, he practiced asceticism on a pillar for 45 years in the city of Chalcedon. In order to observe the vow of silence Ven. Luke carried a stone in his mouth. He died in about the year 970-980. Ven.

STATE OF WASHINGTON DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS HANDBOOK OF RELIGIOUS BELIEFS AND PRACTICES 1987 FIRST REVISION 1995 SECOND REVISION 2004 THIRD REVISION 2011 FOURTH REVISION 2012 FIFTH REVISION 2013 HANDBOOK OF RELIGIOUS BELIEFS AND PRACTICES INTRODUCTION The Department of Corrections acknowledges the inherent and constitutionally protected rights of incarcerated offenders to believe, express and exercise the religion of their choice. It is our intention that religious programs will promote positive values and moral practices to foster healthy relationships, especially within the families of those under our jurisdiction and within the communities to which they are returning. As a Department, we commit to providing religious as well as cultural opportunities for offenders within available resources, while maintaining facility security, safety, health and orderly operations. The Department will not endorse any religious faith or cultural group, but we will ensure that religious programming is consistent with the provisions of federal and state statutes, and will work hard with the Religious, Cultural and Faith Communities to ensure that the needs of the incarcerated community are fairly met. This desk manual has been prepared for use by chaplains, administrators and other staff of the Washington State Department of Corrections. It is not meant to be an exhaustive study of all religions. It does provide a brief background of most religions having participants housed in Washington prisons. This manual is intended to provide general guidelines, and define practice and procedure for Washington State Department of Corrections institutions. It is intended to be used in conjunction with Department policy. While it does not confer theological expertise, it will, provide correctional workers with the information necessary to respond too many of the religious concerns commonly encountered.
