The University of Queensland was once again the setting for the Opening Mass and Senior Induction on Friday 2 February. This ceremony is one of the most significant events in the College calendar and one which involves the whole College community. It is a celebration of the Year 12 gentlemen and their families as they prepare for the year ahead and the final step of their school journey. The Seniors of 2018 have chosen the theme of ‘Shoulder to Shoulder’ to reflect the unified commitment of the group as they aim to lead and support their fellow Terracians and the wider Terrace Family through the opportunities and challenges of the year ahead.

6 | The Terracian The environment of independence that Terrace creates is also something that Damian credits his academic success to. Terrace afforded an atmosphere of individual learning, letting me set my own academic goals, supported but not coddled. Terrace also allowed me to develop my personality and taught me to be personable and approachable, this allowed me to forge relationships with others whilst encouraging my own individuality.

The Oxford academic year starts in October, until then Damian is hoping he can complete more hikes in South Australia and Tasmania before meeting the other Australian Rhodes Scholars and fulfilling the Australian tradition of taking the Trans-Siberian railway to Oxford. A long way around, but a tradition none-the- less. There is much adventure and learning ahead for this young Terracian as he follows in the footsteps of the 17 Rhodes Scholars who came before him.

The Rhodes Scholars of 2018 were selected on their outstanding intellect, character, leadership, and commitment to service. The Rhodes Scholarships support students who demonstrate a strong propensity to emerge as 'leaders for the world’s future'. Talented young people from varying backgrounds continue to be awarded for their scholastic achievements and leadership potential.

The Terracian | 27 Red and Black Cocktail Party

Over 650 guests enjoyed the Gregory Terrace Foundation Red and Black Cocktail Party on 3 March at Gambaro Hotel. As part of our new approach to nurturing our culture of philanthropy, this social event celebrated all supporters and whilst not raising funds on the night, the highly anticipated announcement was a grant of $162 000 to the College. Of this, $1.3m is assisting with the Student Wellbeing Centre currently under construction and $320 000 is fully funding 23 boys through the College Bursary program due to tax deductible donations from across the Terrace Family – Thank you!

Meet Craig Broderick, Owner-Manager of BOQ Sunnybank. Craig has been a BOQ Owner-Manager for 10 years, which means he owns and runs his branch and is passionate about getting to know his customers and their banking needs. This year Craig proudly celebrated 30 years of service at BOQ. At BOQ, we like to do things a little differently to other banks. There’s no central number or recorded messages to contend with – just Craig and his team, ready to help you, when you need it. Come in and say ‘hi’ to Craig and the friendly team at BOQ Sunnybank and see how they are proving it’s possible to love a bank.
