I have to go for a doctor’s appointment this afternoon, followed by nurses doing something arcane with my veins. Once upon a time the world seemed to make some sort of sense to me, but, as I get older, it just seems to be more illogical and more unfair. Take this for example. A friend of mine, who is part of my extended family, paid £45 less than she should have done to Torridge District Council for her Council tax monthly payments. By the time the mess was sorted out she was five days late, and she found that the whole affair had been put into the hands of bailiffs who then threatened to kick her door down if she didn't pay the entire year's Dear friends, tax, including monies which were not yet due, in full. Luckily we were able to help, Welcome to another issue of this peculiar but on behalf of all the poor victims of vile little magazine, which – as I say each week – tactics like these I think that I am going to comes together in some arcane fashion make a stand, and take this outrage as far as I without me realising how it does it, but it can. -

The term is woven deep into our language as well as our consciousness. Consider the connotations of homemade and homespun. Home can offer refuge from the hostile world, or it can be a prison. People living together inevitably — sometimes intentionally — rub one another the wrong way. This chafing provides writers with rich material for art. (Remember, without conflict there is no story.) Are these writers working through their own failed relationships with mothers, fathers, and siblings? Sometimes. Are they exploring their conflicted feelings toward a home they left behind? Maybe. Are they holding up a mirror that allows us to see our own homes and families in a new light? Most certainly. Though the trappings of Happy families are all alike; home and family differ across every unhappy family is unhappy cultures, human families have in its own way. much in common. Legend has it that a man from Czechoslovakia, — Leo Tolstoy, Anna Karenina after watching a production of August Wilson’s Fences (set in Pittsburgh in the 1950s), approached the playwright and asked him, “How did you know about my family?” Wilson may not have known that particular man’s family, but he knew about families and how the sins of the Getty Images / father play out in the lives of sons. -
Re-Issues Reviews
Re-issues Reviews Home To the reviews index News A healthy nihilism goes all bellicose for the poet who turns his pen into a sword. Interviews In the most Orwellian of years Joseph Smalkowski, or Copernicus, decided it was time Reviews for his verses to not only produce a verbal music but also put some external sound to the words - and got himself a kindred-minded band. "Let the musicians declare war!!" goes Index "I Know What I Think", and they do so, indeed, with a full-blown aural onslaught onto DVD which the leader lays his punky stentorian chant. Deranged delight! - unlike the mournful Magazines recital of "Let Me Rest" clocking at 11.11. Books But the opener "I Won't Hurt You" delivers on its sweet, slithery, soulful promise that Specials either skanks or slides to form the most romantic song Copernicus could offer. Still, COPERNICUS - being himself he couldn't help but break such an innocence in the sonic terror of Photo Nothing Exists "Nagasaki", hung on an urgent, oscillating and scintillating rock 'n' roll guitar riff. It's here that the poet denies the existence of everything, him included, so "Atomic Nevermore" Links Nevermore 1984 spreads its spoken word over the emotional desert which somehow makes the listener MoonJune 2010 explore the album's dry landscape again. DME/Personal ***1/2 Guestbook Mail me The original angularity seeps away for guitar to feed on - and feedback - on a honeysuckle vine. Having tapped into the fusion fad of the day with "Bundles", the machinists might have thought they arrived at the right station, yet the restless passenger in Allan Holdsworth knew better. -

Almost Joined-Up Words from Our Old Gonzo Author Friend, Alan Dearling
Hawkeaster: You wished you were there! Almost joined-up words from our old Gonzo author friend, Alan Dearling ‘So, who are Hawk-friends?’ someone asked during one of the two Q&A sessions with members of Hawkwind during the two day Hawkfest. ‘It’s you – all of you,’ was the loud and clear answer from Dave Brock and his merry band of musical mates. And the whole weekend was akin to a private party, held this year in the somewhat unlikely venue of Seaton in Devon’s old town hall, now run as the Gateway by a bunch of local worthies under the guise of Seaton’s Voice. Throughout the weekend Dave wandered around affably beaming at all his acolytes who had made their myriad ways from as far afield as Australia to join the party. But then there was a logic in this location - Seaton is the town closest to the farm where Dave lives. I set up my little tent at the Manor Farm camp site up on the hillside overlooking Seaton and Lyme Bay. Magnificent views. A bit of a clamber back after a long day of sonic space rock, but a friendly site and for those who could afford it, there was accommodation in Eve’s tipis, shipped over specially from the Isle of Wight. Hawkfests are eagerly looked forward to by the loyal fans, many of whom are now well into being bus pass delinquents. But there were some younger space cadets along for the cosmic adventures too. And lots of friendly local volunteers like my mate Phil, who mostly ‘stewarded’ the stage-right exit door against any would-be, axe or sword wielding warriors on the edge of time who wanted to escape! I think many of the volunteers were both bemused and a little surprised at the ‘niceness’ of the weird hippy invasion that had flooded into their usually rather staid little town. -

I was always impressed by Penny Rimbaud’s statement that the later Crass singles were issued as “tactical responses” to given situations. I started off writing and editing Fanzines, and it is only for reasons of my own that I decided to issue this magazine like Dear Friends, clockwork every Saturday, more recently every Friday. And so, what was planned to be an ordinary “ring in the old, ring out the new” (or is it But I think that the job of a magazine is a the other way round?) type issue has complex one, and I wouldn’t really like to completely gone out the window. Because clarify it into words, but it seems right that Lemmy dying has completely let the cat we document such an important event, amongst the cultural pigeons in a way that (which does appear to be lifechanging for one suspects the old bugger would have some people) into a special edition of Gonzo enjoyed. -
Press Pack July 2010
Press Pack July 2010 Lets Go Crazy Ltd. 78 Portland Road, Holland Park, W11 4LQ The Independent, 26th December 2009 Talent 2010: The entrepreneur, Callum Negus-Fancey Callum Negus-Fancey dropped out of school in the middle of his A-Levels. Formal education, he explains, was just a little two-dimensional. Rather than continuing his studies in economics, philosophy and politics, the head- strong 17-year-old decided to pursue his burgeoning career as an underage party promoter, putting on late- night music events for 14-16 year olds. “I’d put on a few parties while at school,” Callum explains, “and soon realised there was a demand for proper dance music nights for teenagers with big artist line-ups in big venues, with an emphasis on good music.” To this effect, Callum launched his own company Let’s Go Crazy, with an all-star event on July 2008, at London’s infamous SE1 club. Callum had no marketing budget for his party. Instead, having convinced some big name DJs to play at his event, the teenager set about promoting the club-night through social networking sites such as Facebook, and by word- of-mouth, enlisting students at a number of schools in the capital to sell tickets on commission basis. Within a week, all 3,000 tickets had been shifted. Since then, Callum has put on around 15 events at clubs and festivals around the country. He has continued to expand the Let’s Go Crazy brand with an online magazine, a discount loyalty card for night-club regulars, plans for a one-off fashion event, after GCSE travel packages, and secured gigs at Bestival, Camp Bestival next summer, and its own festival in Hyde Park, for 10,000 guests. -
