Brunswick Delgado, Taylor and Boyle elected to Board of Education BY JENNIFER BOOTON Staff WrUer A school budget that carries a signifi- cant tax increase and massive staff and program cuts passed in South Brunswick by more than 350 votes. A quarter of South Brunswick voters hit the polls April 20 in what marked one of the largest school-election turnouts in the town's history. Of those voters, 3,199 voted in favor of the budget and 2,836 voted against it. "I believe that the most important thing that I can do is advocate for South Brunswick public schools and South Bruaswick students, staff and programs," said Superintendent of Schools Gary McCartney. "That's what we did in terms of creating this budget, and I think that resonated with the majority of vot- ers in our community." Voters passed a spending bill for the 2010-11 budget that is 5.5 percent less than last year but includes a 7.5-cent increase in the tax rate. Only 41.3 percent of the 537 proposed budgets re- ceived voter approval in the April 20 school election, according to unofficial results re- leased on April 21 by the New Jersey School Boards Association. That figure compares with a 73.3 percent approval rate last year. "This has been a year unlike any we've seen before," said Marie S. Bilik, NJSBA executive director. "Local boards of educa- tion did their best with the hand they were dealt. The election results should not be viewed as a rejection of public education or school programs. It is clear that voters were reacting to many concerns, including the poor economy and high property taxes." According to the NJSBA, local school boards had to develop budgets in the wake of two unexpected and large cuts in state aid, according to Bilik.
