From the dissonant opening riff of “Row” to mock-fadeout of “Working Dead,” FlyLiteGemini – an offshoot of Kalamazoo’s Fly Paper – seems to have found a “This is the Is” live @ Bell's Brewery 2/7/19 voice all its own. Singer/multi-instrumentalist Joe Chamberlin presents a distinct vision across the album’s 14 "The Way” live 11/24/18 songs, accompanied by powerful rock ‘n’ roll drumming by Sam Rice. These guys certainly can play the blues, too, as “Better Days” live 11/24/18 heard on the speedy and aggressive “Love Sweet Love.” And amid all the lyrical expression and storytelling are hints of a folk sensibility, as heard on “Inside” and “Wild West,” which Social Media seemingly invite the listener to lean in closer … and the Facebook invitation is accepted.” facebook.com/flylitegemini - Devin Anderson, LocalSpins.com (Oct 19, 2017) "This band is outstanding!" Welcome from the President ELCOME TO THE 29TH ANNUAL Great Taste of the Midwest. At a time when we probably should be over- whelmed by the explosive growth of the craft beer industry, we are too busy trying to figure Wout how to make this event a better experience for all. To that end, we are excited that we have maintained the same foot- print as we’ve had in past years, but have added more brewer space, by moving our merch tents and adding a few new tents to a previously restricted staff only area of the park (inside the “loop road”). This allows us bring in some new brewers while continuing to bring back the brewers that you come to expect to see at the Great Taste of the Midwest. I would like to thank Great Taste Chairman, Mark Garthwaite and the multitude of volunteers that make this event happen. We are all very proud that this is the only event of this size that is run by a 100% volunteer effort. Their passion for beer is a large part of what makes a volunteer effort of this size a success. I would also like to thank all of the Brewers that come to the Great Taste of the Midwest. All of “our” passion for beer flows from their passion. As the event has grown and produced more return Brewers each year, we’ve come to think of the Brewers as family coming home every year on the second Saturday in August. Sadly, I have to acknowledge the passing of several MHTG members since the last Great Taste.

That is why we urge you to oppose two legislative actions that are sweeping attacks on the Clean Water Act, one of our nation’s bedrock environmental laws. Senator John Barrasso’s bill, the Federal Water Quality Protection Act (S1140), would gut the Clean Water Rule, ignoring the nearly 900,000 public comments that supported the agencies’ efforts and ignoring the copious scientific evidence about how different types of waters are connected.

  • Breweries of Early Kalamazoo (1837-1915) “The Brew from Kalamazoo”
All About Kalamazoo History – Kalamazoo Public Library Breweries of Early Kalamazoo (1837-1915) “The Brew from Kalamazoo” By the 1980s, American beer had famously become a homogeneous mass-produced Pilsner-style light lager, with little variation among the leading brands. While beer consumption at the time was at the highest rate in US history, the top ten brewers in the United States alone accounted for 93% of the total domestic beer production, leaving little room for the few that could then be classified as “craft” beer breweries. Still, a young Kalamazoo entrepreneur went into the brewing business, armed only with a recipe, a 15-gallon soup pot, and a $200 birthday gift from his mom. Today, Bell’s Brewery, Inc. is the largest craft brewer in Michigan and ranks among the top 10 in the nation (by sales volume), employing more than 330 people with the capacity to produce more than 500,000 barrels annually. Others have since followed suit, placing Kalamazoo at the forefront of the craft brewing movement with the nation’s first higher ed program in sustainable craft brewing, an annual Kalamazoo Beer Week celebration, and significant worldwide recognition, including a nomination for “Beer City USA” in 2013. Recently, U.S. News & World Report named Kalamazoo among the eight underrated beer cities in the world. Larry Bell and Kalamazoo’s many fine brewmasters follow a long line of local brewers and maltsters that reaches back to the early nineteenth century. In fact, the art of crafting fine (and some perhaps otherwise) beers and ales can be traced to Kalamazoo’s earliest days as a frontier village.

  • 2008 Great Taste Program
Welcome from the President Welcome to the 22nd annual Great Taste of the Midwest! Once again, we've got an incredible selection of beers that should titillate your taste buds, and we've made several exciting changes which we hope will make your experience even more enjoyable. We've increased space by fencing in more of the park. Instead of the three large tents that we've have had for many years, there are five smaller ones, which means more brewers, shorter lines and better traffic flow. More tents also means more corners, so expect to see more creative and exciting brewer displays. Our expanded education tent this year will have more than just historical displays, but also presentations pairing beer with chocolate, pairing cheese with beer, and a presentation on cooking with beer. This is our third year for the real ale tent, which is growing again due to its amazing popularity. We'll have sixty delicious cask-conditioned beers which are served right from the firkin. If you've never tried a cask conditioned beer, be sure to stop by! Every year I learn to appreciate this event more and more. The location, the patrons, the brewers and all of the incredible beers make this a truly remarkable event that gets better year after year. Also remarkable are the dedicated members of the Madison Homebrewers and Tasters Guild, whose love for brewing and craft beer has made this event possible. Please take time to thank the festival organizers wearing the beige work shirts, many of whom work countless hours each year to make this event a success.
