big blue football 2007 - 3 CCIW WELCOME

With the help and support of our fans, member institutions, administrators, coaches and student-ath - letes, the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) enters the 2007-08 academic year as its 62nd season of competition, and its 22nd year for women’s sports.

The CCIW, recognized as one of the “Best Small-College Conferences in the Nation,” has seen its share of success throughout its time, with 32 NCAA Division III national championships in nine different sports won by our member schools.

Since the 1991-92 academic year, the CCIW has remained consistent in its membership with eight academically superior institutions, including Augustana, Carthage, Elmhurst, Illinois Wesleyan, Millikin, North Central, North Park and Wheaton. In 2007, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, located in Terre Haute, Ind., joined the CCIW as an associate member for men’s and women’s swimming.

The CCIW, which sponsors 21 sports, has carried a long tradition of excellence dating back to its CCIW Commissioner Chris Martin inception in 1946, helping student-athletes grow in their athletic as well as educational experience. The CCIW looks to continue that tradition and remains dedicated to helping our student-athletes towards success.

On behalf of the CCIW and its member schools, we would like to thank you for the support of our ath - letic teams and hope you enjoy your experience at all CCIW events.

Sincerely,

Chris Martin, Commissioner, CCIW

Mike Krizman, Assistant Commissioner/Sports Information Director, CCIW

big blue football 2007 - 23 FRANK M. LINDSAY FIELD

Named in memory of long-time Decatur business leader and media owner, and recognizing the support given to Millikin by his family, Frank M. Lindsay Field was dedicated on Oct. 17, 1987. Gifts from the Lindsay family and from an endowment fund created in 1961 by former members of the defunct Kappa Delta Chi fraterni - ty financed the project. Donations from the class - es of 1979 and 1980 assisted in the purchase of a new scoreboard, while a new sound system, an improved drainage system and an underground irrigation system were also added. Frank M. Lindsay Field seats 4,000, including seating for 2,300 spectators on the west side. Lindsay Field also includes a concession stand and restrooms under the southwest corner of the grandstand. The newest addition to Lindsay Field is a state-of-the-art press box built on the west side of the field. Construction of the new press box con - cluded in Spring 2001 and was funded entirely with the gift of $800,000 from the late F. Merrill and the late Margery "Sis" Lindsay. The lower level features expanded working spaces for print and electronic media. It has up-to-date features includ - ing telephone and Internet connections in all boxes. Game- day clock workers, coaches and the Sports Information staff join the media in the lower level. A large guest area is locat - ed on the second level, and videographers can find a clear view of the field from the top of the second level. The press box is handicap-accessible by elevator from both levels, is air-conditioned and heated with restroom facilities on each floor. In the summer of 2001, the press box was used when Millikin hosted the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships and the USATF Youth Championships. Millikin also hosted the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships and the USATF Masters Meet in 2003. Millikin awarded an honorary degree to Frank Lindsay in 1954 and to his son, F. Merrill Lindsay in 1981, making them one of the only two father-son combinations so recognized by the University. F. Merrill Lindsay and his wife, Sis, donated a gift of $1 million to Millikin in 1997 for the new running track around the football field. The gift provided the impetus for the track project. Frank M. Lindsay Field served as the site of the Millikin football program’s 500th win. The Big Blue won the pro - gram’s 500th contest on Nov. 13, 2004, a 45-24 victory over Illinois .

big blue football 2007 - 25 BIG BLUE ATHLETIC TRAINING

Without a doubt, most college students overbook themselves. They go to classes, participate in student organizations, maintain social relationships, often hold down a part-time job and even find time to study a bit. Throw in additional activities, such as athletics, and the daily to-do list becomes even more hectic. But exceeding the demands of the typical student’s schedule, and even that of an ath - lete, athletic training students make a huge time commitment to prepare for their future careers. Interested in being an athletic trainer? Here’s what you can expect as a part of Millikin’s nationally accredited program.

• A Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training

• Ability to sit for the of Certification exam after degree completion

• Four years of intensive study, including courses in Exercise Science, Biology, Chemistry, Nursing and Psychology

• Professional hands-on training under the supervision of certified athletic trainers while developing skills in the prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation of injuries to 700+ Millikin athletes

• Off-campus learning experiences through rotations at the offices of the team physicians and in local sports medicine clinics

• Practice and in-game experience during rotations with each of Millikin’s 20 varsity sports

The mission of Millikin’s Athletic Training Education Program is to provide quality education for students wishing to become certified athletic trainers. At Millikin, athletic training students function as integral members of the athletic health care team in cooperation with medical personnel, athletic administrators, coaches and parents. Admission to the program is very selected, and interested students complete general athletic training classes during their first year before undergoing a rigorous interview process to receive full admission into the program. Students are chosen based on their academic performance, their admittance interview and clinical performance.
