a City of Peekskill Cultural Heritage Tourism Strategic Plan prepared by FFAIRWEATHER CCONSULTING NEW PALTZ, NY with PETE MATHIEU & ASSOCIATES MONTGOMERY,, NY HONESDALE,, PA June 2011 City of Peekskill Cultural Heritage Tourism Strategic Plan Executive Summary Creating the Cultural Heritage Tourism strategic plan was an eight-month process involving an assessment of market trends, an analysis of Peekskill’s Cultural Heritage Tourism attractions and stakeholder outreach and public engagement. In accordance with the City’s desire to involve the public and incorporate the ideas of the major stakeholders, five meetings were scheduled and conducted during October and November 2010 and an interactive public website was created. The initial meeting was held on October 4th with the Peekskill Common Council during their regularly scheduled workshop meeting. Following this, there were two meetings on October 19th for interested business-owners, not-for-profits, and other entities invested in Peekskill’s revitalization. Also on October 19th, a session involving the City of Peekskill professional staff was conducted at City Hall. The final meeting on November 4th was specifically for maritime stakeholders, and included businesses/entities that were particularly interested in Peekskill’s waterfront development. The inventory and analysis of the City’s cultural heritage assets can be found in the full project report. It provided the foundation to assess Peekskill’s ability to compete in the cultural heritage tourism market. This was complemented by an analysis of national and local trends in cultural heritage tourism. Market Analysis National Cultural Heritage Tourism Trends A cultural/heritage traveler is “a person who travels to experience the places, people, activities, and things that authentically represent the past and present, including cultural, historic, and natural resources,” (“The Cultural and Heritage Traveler,” 2009, pg.

  • Using Tv News in Basic Writing Classes
Robert F. Moss USING TV NEWS IN BASIC WRITING CLASSES "Pursue your studies," said the tall, handsome Black man at the podium, hisvoice a sonorous instrument echoingthrough the auditorium. "Prepare yourselves to be teachers, lawyers, architects. But always be open to new avenues and possibilitiestoo. You might wind up in the fields you've chosen or, like me, you might wind up on Eyewitness News." The speaker wasJohn Johnson, a veteran ABC newsman and member of New York's WABC-TV news team. The place was Hunter College in New York City and the sponsor was SEEK, a citywide programwhose enrollment is principally made up of students from disadvantaged and minority backgrounds. The occasion was SEEK's annual Honors Day ceremony, a celebration of student achievement in academics and school service, and Johnson was the featured guest. He was about as attractive a role model as one could imagine, and his remarks brought laughter and applause from the audience, many of whom no doubt relished the image of themselves asmembers of a glamorous industry, their facessmil ing out of the nation's TV sets, their viewers in the millions and their salariesnot far behind. Johnson captivated hislisteners from the moment he began his addressnot only because of his striking physical appearance and well-honed speaking skills but because of the industry he represents. In a more impromptu address a few years before, Chee Chee Williams, a Black newswoman who is a colleague of Johnson's at ABC, had excited our students in much the same way. Student elation at the sight of a television reporter was not hard to comprehend.

In an attempt to capitalize on fears and insecurlties growing out of this crisis, radical right extremist groups·, many of them espousing virulent anti-Semitism, have intensified their proselytizing activities among the farmers of the Middle West. The recent airing by ABC Television of d 20/20 segment documenting the preaching of anti-Semitism and extremi-st ideologies among dispossessed and struggling farmers has generated a great deal of anxiety among th.ose searching for constructive solutions to the farm crisis·. Within the past ten days, Jonathan lev.ine, the AJC 's Chicago Regional Director, Marcia Lazar, President of AJC' s Chicago Chapter, and Rabbi James Rud ln,. AJC 's Interrellgious Affairs Director, conducted intensive fact-finding trips in Kansas and Iowa. They met with farmers, public officials, law-enforce ment officers (including the· FBI), leaders of the Christian clergy, faculty members of an agricultural college, newspaper editors, radio talk-show hosts, co~mmunity organizers of progressive farm coallt, lons, bankers, and representa tives of the Jewish comm·ul'\ities in both states.

CASELLA: The Chicago Experiment – Journalist Attitudes and The Ten O’Clock News: Reported by Carol Marin (Under the direction of C.A. Tuggle, PhD) WBBM-TV, the CBS owned-and-operated television station in Chicago, embarked on what was called a “noble experiment” in television journalism in February 2000. The Ten O’Clock News: Reported by Carol Marin was a return to traditional, normative television journalism. The program, with respected journalist Carol Marin as the only anchor, was an attempt by station management to revive the moribund ratings of the late news broadcast with traditional hard news. Station management promised to stick with the new format for at least one year. Nine month later, amid even lower ratings, a new management team cancelled the experiment. This is the first academic investigation of that initiative. This qualitative study utilized data generated from long interviews with five principals of the news program. The findings provided great insight into the philosophies and attitudes that shaped the broadcast, and revealed some of the things that caused the program’s demise. They also revealed a clear and definite attitude of antagonism that varied according to job responsibilities and position in the editorial hierarchy.
