Canadian Singer-Songwriter Neema's Breakout Album Watching You Canadian Singer-Songwriter NEeMA’s Breakout Album Watching You Think Available Now in the U.S. * * * * New Album Co-Produced by Leonard Cohen and Pierre Marchand (Sarah McLaughlin, Ron Sexsmith) and Features Montreal's Finest Musicians ****** Upcoming American Tour Dates Include Austin’s South By Southwest Plus New York, Boston, Washington D.C. & More March 1, 2011 – Eclectic Canadian singer-songwriter NEeMA has been captivating music fans around the world for the past several years, and now she is bringing her distinctive voice and original songs to the U.S. with today’s release of her breakout album, Watching You Think . The album was produced by NEeMA in association with acclaimed musical icon Leonard Cohen , as well as noted producer Pierre Marchand (Sarah McLachlan, Ron Sexsmith). To give American audiences a taste of her unique sound, NEeMA, will be performing on tour across the U.S., beginning with appearances at Austin’s famed South By Southwest on March 16-19, followed by dates in New York, Boston, Washington D.C. and more. See below for NEeMA’s full 2011 itinerary. NEeMA’s Watching You Think can be purchased now on iTunes and Amazon . Click here to sample tracks and view the video for “Escape,” the album’s first single. Leonard Cohen is more than just a co-producer of this album; he is a musical mentor and fan of NEeMA’s. Of NEeMA’s work, he has said, “in the midst of all the static, a voice of true feeling arises - a rare event!” The legendary musician/poet/artist also drew the haunting portrait of NEeMA, which serves as the album’s cover. Like Cohen, NEeMA surrounds herself with only the best musicians, and the songs on Watching You Think are expertly fleshed out by some of Montreal's finest: Howard Bilerman and Tim Kingsbury of alternative hitmakers Arcade Fire; Tom Mennier, who has performed with Martha and Rufus Wainwright; Gurpreet Chana, who recorded with Nelly Furtado; Joe Grass and Miles Perkin, who accompanied award-winning singer Lhasa de Sela; and Haig V, who co-produced Bran Van 3000's album Glee . NEeMA has also added a newly recorded song, “Masi,” to the U.S. release; the track was inspired by the singer’s years of living and working with the Tlicho Indigenous People of Canada's North. NEeMA’s Watching You Think displays the artist's international background and experience, seamlessly melding elements of world music, folk, and jazz with a good measure of pop. The album’s twelve original songs of love, life and simple observations are delivered in an uninhibited style. Already released in her native Canada, the album has garnered rave reviews from the top outlets. Paste Magazine praised the album, saying “the music is rich in the chamber pop and folk tradition, with a penchant for precise and delicate lyrics,” while The Globe & Mail called NEeMA “a gifted wordsmith…the settings are as thoughtful and detailed as the songs they adorn. A stunner." The Calgary Herald praised the “strong sophomore effort that finds the artist chronicling both inner and outer turmoil in broad, poetic strokes,” while the Ottawa X Press said that “there's no denying this new voice in music is a strong, individualistic and driven one.” The Winnipeg Sun aptly summed up NEeMA’s style as they described her “dreamy, introspective folk balladry delivered in mostly hushed tones and stylishly accented with strings and atmospheric production.” NEeMA first arrived on the scene with her 2006 debut album Masi Cho , which was nominated for a MIMI (Montreal International Music Initiative) in the World & Roots category. Since then, NEeMA has toured Canada, Ireland, Australia, England and the U.S. In the summer of 2007 alone, she performed more than 33 concerts, including Nova Scotia’s Privateer Days Festival and the South Country Fair Festival in Alberta. Other highlights include her 2008 concert at the Electric Picnic Festival in Ireland, the 2008 Winterfolk Festival in Toronto and Canadian Music Week, and sold-out shows at the Montreal International Jazz Festival in both 2009 and 2010. She also performed an extensive series of fall 2010 tour dates across the U.S., including select performances with The Chapin Sisters. Born in Montreal of Egyptian and Lebanese decent, NEeMA’s presence on and off stage is powerful and charismatic, and her voice has an honesty that appeals to audiences worldwide. She has traveled the globe, spending time with spiritual leaders including the Dalai Lama and Mother Teresa; as well as the tribal elders of Wekweti, an isolated First Nation community in northern Canada. With her journeys, she has acquired an undeniable ability to communicate her stories through poetry and song, exploring those themes that are dear to the human heart. • Singer-Songwriter Jesse Winchester Here Friday
Singer-songwriter Jesse Winchester here Friday BY GEORGE VARGA SEPTEMBER 8, 2010 JESSE WINCHESTER Not many musicians can simultaneously make Elvis Costello choke up and bring Neko Case to tears with an unadorned solo acoustic performance of a single song. But that’s exactly what veteran troubadour Jesse Winchester did last fall in New York when he sang his wonderfully poignant ballad about two teenagers in love, “Sham-A-Ling-Dong-Ding,” a standout number from his enchanting 2009 album, “Love Filling Station.” You can watch it here: http:/www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uKGWpqnS8E%20 The setting was Harlem’s famed Apollo Theater, where Costello’s Sundance TV music series, “Spectacle,” filmed its first two seasons in front of loudly appreciative audiences. Louisiana native Winchester — who appeared on an episode alongside Costello, Case, Sheryl Crow and Ron Sexsmith — quietly stole the show with that song and an equally spare but stunning version of “The Brand New Tennessee Waltz,” an understated classic from his 1970 debut album. “Doing ‘Spectacle’ has been a big boost for my career,” said Winchester, who kicks off a five- city California tour here Friday night at the all-ages AMSD Concerts (formerly Acoustic Music San Diego) in Normal Heights. “I’m working at least twice as much as I used to. But I’m not really well known, so ‘twice as much’ for me is still not the same as for a really popular act.” In 2007, Winchester received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Composers, Artists and Publishers. That he is not a household name stems from a simple twist of fate.

  • Pieces of a Woman
PIECES OF A WOMAN Directed by Kornél Mundruczó Starring Vanessa Kirby, Shia LaBeouf, Molly Parker, Sarah Snook, Iliza Shlesinger, Benny Safdie, Jimmie Falls, Ellen Burstyn **WORLD PREMIERE – In Competition – Venice Film Festival 2020** **OFFICIAL SELECTION – Gala Presentations – Toronto International Film Festival 2020** Press Contacts: US: Julie Chappell | [email protected] International: Claudia Tomassini | [email protected] Sales Contact: Linda Jin | [email protected] 1 SHORT SYNOPSIS When an unfathomable tragedy befalls a young mother (Vanessa Kirby), she begins a year-long odyssey of mourning that touches her husband (Shia LaBeouf), her mother (Ellen Burstyn), and her midwife (Molly Parker). Director Kornél Mundruczó (White God, winner of the Prix Un Certain Regard Award, 2014) and partner/screenwriter Kata Wéber craft a deeply personal meditation and ultimately transcendent story of a woman learning to live alongside her loss. SYNOPSIS Martha and Sean Carson (Vanessa Kirby, Shia LaBeouf) are a Boston couple on the verge of parenthood whose lives change irrevocably during a home birth at the hands of a flustered midwife (Molly Parker), who faces charges of criminal negligence. Thus begins a year-long odyssey for Martha, who must navigate her grief while working through fractious relationships with her husband and her domineering mother (Ellen Burstyn), along with the publicly vilified midwife whom she must face in court. From director Kornél Mundruczó (White God, winner of the Prix Un Certain Regard Award, 2014), with artistic support from executive producer Martin Scorsese, and written by Kata Wéber, Mundruczó’s partner, comes a deeply personal, searing domestic aria in exquisite shades of grey and an ultimately transcendent story of a woman learning to live alongside her loss.

  • Carefully Pieced Together Around Feist
FEIST ‘Let It Die’ is very much a voice album in close up, “eye to eye and ear to ear”. Carefully pieced together around Feist’s seductive and jhai* voice, the album forms the missing link between ye old folk (storytelling), the Brill building era (the quest for the hook), doo-wop (melody and mood) and minimal modern pop arrangements. Like line drawings as opposed to detailed paintings, these songs leave you space to fill in the emotional blanks. Its lack of complication makes ‘Let It Die’ standout from much of today’s musical offerings; put simply, a beautiful slice of sonic escapism to illustrate and interrupt the little moments that together tell us stories. A history not lacking in variety, the Canadian born singer has accomplished much in her few tender years, so for those inquisitive journo types, here are the last few years in a nut shell… “My first proper gig was supporting the Ramones at an outdoor festival when my high school punk band won a battle of the bands contest. We played together for about 5 years. I moved to Toronto from Calgary to see a musical injuries doctor, after losing my voice on my first cross-Canadian tour when I was 19. Not knowing a soul in Toronto I spent 6 months in a dark basement apartment with a 4 track and having been told not to sing I got a guitar to do it for me. A couple of years later I was playing guitar in By Divine Right and toured for 6 months opening for the Tragically Hip, mostly in front of stadium crowds of around 40,000.

  • A Concert Review by Christof Graf
Leonard Cohen`s Tower Of Song: A Grand Gala Of Excellence Without Compromise by Christof Graf A Memorial Tribute To Leonard Cohen Bell Centre, Montreal/ Canada, 6th November 2017 A concert review by Christof Graf Photos by: Christof Graf “The Leonard Cohen Memorial Tribute ‘began in a grand fashion,” wrote the MONTREAL GAZETTE. “One Year After His Death, the Legendary Singer-Songwriter is Remembered, Spectacularly, in Montral,” headlined the US-Edition of NEWSWEEK. The media spoke of a “Star-studded Montreal memorial concert which celebrated life and work of Leonard Cohen.” –“Cohen fans sing, shout Halleluja in tribute to poet, songwriter Leonard,” was the title chosen by THE STAR. The NATIONAL POST said: “Sting and other stars shine in fast-paced, touching Leonard Cohen tribute in Montreal.” Everyone present shared this opinion. It was a moving and fascinating event of the highest quality. The first visitors had already begun their pilgrimage to the Hockey Arena of the Bell Centre at noon. The organizers reported around 20.000 visitors in the evening. Some media outlets estimated 16.000, others 22.000. Many visitors came dressed in dark suits and fedora hats, an homage to Cohen’s “work attire.” Cohen last sported his signature wardrobe during his over three hour long concerts from 2008 to 2013. How many visitors were really there was irrelevant; the Bell Centre was filled to the rim. The “Tower Of Song- A Memorial Tribute To Leonard Cohen” was sold out. Expectations were high as fans of the Canadian Singer/Songwriter pilgrimmed from all over the world to Montreal to pay tribute to their deceased idol.

  • The Kanpe Foundation's Manifesto
THE KANPE FOUNDATION’S MANIFESTO - ON THE EVE OF THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE EARTHQUAKE IN HAITI. January 8th, 2020 (MONTREAL): Every January 12th, for the past 9 years, critiques of the mismanagement of funds allocated to earthquake relief reappear in the news cycle. The Haitian government, NGOs and international actors have been singled out for their inability to efficiently collaborate in crisis management, relocation of displaced citizens or reconstruction of devastated areas. As an organization aiming to help the less fortunate, KANPE has chosen - since its inception - to look beyond specific failures or crises and focus instead on potential successes, by supporting rural communities and accompanying them on their journey towards autonomy. While we recognize the numerous challenges that Haitians still face, we also bear witness to many success stories that go unreported in the media. These significant results are often submerged in unfairly critical coverage of Haiti, as the international community can have a tendency to ignore the country’s rich culture and history. We have made it our priority to share these achievements. And, to celebrate Haiti’s culture while also highlighting the country’s strengths and wealth. The last decade reminded us of the will, courage and determination of Haitians. At KANPE, we work with Haitian communities, partners and experts along with Canadian and American collaborators and donors who, like us, do not give up on seeking out and implementing solutions, despite the crises and injustices affecting the country. Ann vanse! Signatories Dominique Anglade and Régine Chassagne, co-founders of KANPE along with current and former members of its Board of Trustees with friends and collaborators from Canada, the United States and Haiti.
