  • Jon Lord June 9 1941 – July 16 2012
Jon Lord June 9 1941 – July 16 2012 Founder member of Deep Purple, Jon Lord was born in Leicester. He began playing piano aged 6, studying classical music until leaving school at 17 to become a Solicitor’s clerk. Initially leaning towards the theatre, Jon moved to London in 1960 and trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama, winning a scholarship, and paying for food and lodgings by performing in pubs. In 1963 he broke away from the school with a group of teachers and other students to form the pioneering London Drama Centre. A year later, Jon “found himself“ in an R and B band called The Artwoods (fronted by Ronnie Wood’s brother, Art) where he remained until the summer of 1967. During this period, Jon became a much sought after session musician recording with the likes of Elton John, John Mayall, David Bowie, Jeff Beck and The Kinks (eg 'You Really Got Me'). In December 1967, Jon met guitarist Richie Blackmore and by early 1968 the pair had formed Deep Purple. The band would pioneer hard rock and go on to sell more than 100 million albums, play live to more than 10 million people, and were recognized in 1972 by The Guinness Book of World Records as “the loudest group in the world”. Deep Purple’s debut LP “Shades of Deep Purple” (1968) generated the American Top 5 smash hit “Hush”. In 1969, singer Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover joined and the band’s sound became heaver and more aggressive on “Deep Purple in Rock” (1970), where Jon developed a groundbreaking new way of amplifying the sound of the Hammond organ to match the distinctive sound of the electric guitar.

  • Whitehouse, "Never Forget Death", "Halogen"
Brainwashed - Whitehouse, "Never Forget Death", "Halogen" Written by Creaig Dunton Sunday, 03 June 2012 22:03 - Last Updated Sunday, 03 June 2012 23:20 These two albums are two thirds of what I consider to be Whitehouse's most idiosyncratic, and therefore most compelling phase in their 26-plus years of activity. Culminating with 1995's Qual ity Time , which I have discussed at length before , the phase began here, with probably their most musical and understated (in relative terms, of course) works, respectively. Susan Lawly Quality Time was my initial exposure to Whitehouse, but by the time 1998's Mummy and Daddy was released, I had pretty much already digested much of their discography. Looking over their body of work, I see four distinct phases in their albums, from lyrics to vocals to the noises that which accompanies them. The first phase, beginning with 1980's Birthdeath Experience up until 1983's legendary Right to Kill perhaps shows their greatest and most productive evolution. At that point, consisting of William Bennett and whomever he was acquainted with at that time (including Steve Stapleton for a few live performances), the band went from an atonal anomaly: in a modern context, Birthdeath Experience and Total Sex sound almost quaint; to a violent monstrosity: New Britain and Right to Kill are just as powerful and disturbing 30 years later. 1 / 5 Brainwashed - Whitehouse, "Never Forget Death", "Halogen" Written by Creaig Dunton Sunday, 03 June 2012 22:03 - Last Updated Sunday, 03 June 2012 23:20 The "second coming" as it was heralded at the time began with 1985's Great White Death and saw the band as a power trio of sorts: Bennett in the lead, backed by author Peter Sotos and Kevin Tomkins (then formally, and now once again currently of Sutcliffe Jugend).

  • Samon Takahashi G S E Idea of Finding the Recording of Silence
Samon Takahashi G!""#$%& $% S$'(%)( #e idea of $nding the recording of silence interesting could amuse some, as would indeed the sight of Marcel Duchamp’s Air de Paris. And yet, the same could go into raptures in front of a group portrait of their o%spring, or simply by listening to their favorite music. But it is precisely our subject: silence being recorded, or, when in thoughts associated with an object, can be set, identi$ed, delimited. Silence then becomes a space out-of-nature, ready to dissolve back into it, as does the old family portrait in one’s memory, as does music in the world’s echo. It raises embarrassed smiles because it absorbs everything but one’s fear of oneself. Let’s appropriate Debussy’s proposition “Music is the pause in between notes”, and freely stretch the length between them until the silence becomes concrete enough that their original note of emission, the ‘Anakrousis’, vanishes in ether. #e two framing notes can take any shape external to the music; in fact, they operate as simple markers creating boundaries. #e last spoken word before a si- lence then broken when speech is resumed, the sound of the amp switch-on and the following switch-o%, the turntable’s arm landing on the black and then going back to rest; all will do the trick. #erefore, and unquestionably, each recorded pause becomes music; silence not as noiselessness, but as the locus of all sound- ing possibilities, of all dreamt music. And, as for music, silences come in all forms and styles: more or less evoca- tive, at times loud or of di%erent strength, conceptual or traps, without forgetting those that one needs to $ll up.

  • Notes from the Underground: a Cultural, Political, and Aesthetic Mapping of Underground Music
Notes From The Underground: A Cultural, Political, and Aesthetic Mapping of Underground Music. Stephen Graham Goldsmiths College, University of London PhD 1 I declare that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Signed: …………………………………………………. Date:…………………………………………………….. 2 Abstract The term ‗underground music‘, in my account, connects various forms of music-making that exist largely outside ‗mainstream‘ cultural discourse, such as Drone Metal, Free Improvisation, Power Electronics, and DIY Noise, amongst others. Its connotations of concealment and obscurity indicate what I argue to be the music‘s central tenets of cultural reclusion, political independence, and aesthetic experiment. In response to a lack of scholarly discussion of this music, my thesis provides a cultural, political, and aesthetic mapping of the underground, whose existence as a coherent entity is being both argued for and ‗mapped‘ here. Outlining the historical context, but focusing on the underground in the digital age, I use a wide range of interdisciplinary research methodologies , including primary interviews, musical analysis, and a critical engagement with various pertinent theoretical sources. In my account, the underground emerges as a marginal, ‗antermediated‘ cultural ‗scene‘ based both on the web and in large urban centres, the latter of whose concentration of resources facilitates the growth of various localised underground scenes. I explore the radical anti-capitalist politics of many underground figures, whilst also examining their financial ties to big business and the state(s). This contradiction is critically explored, with three conclusions being drawn. First, the underground is shown in Part II to be so marginal as to escape, in effect, post- Fordist capitalist subsumption.

  • Mike Vernon: “The Producer” by Gianni Franchi
Mike Vernon: “the Producer” by Gianni Franchi Interview SB: Can you tell me something about your beginning in music as artist and then as producer? MV: I always had had a strong interest in music from a very early age. My father had a War time friend...I only really ever knew him as 'Uncle Charlie'...as a family we used to go their home on a Sunday for lunch. I remember that Charlie had a collection of 78s and he would often pick out a few and play them whilst we were relaxing after eating. The collection was very varied but he had a number of items that really intrigued me...even though I was not even a teenager at that time! Louis Jordan & His Tympany Five; The Mills Brothers and The Ink Spots in particular. Those Rhythm & Blues sounds were to become a very important part of my musical journey in future years. My mother was a regular Church goer and both my brother Richard and I attended on a regular basis also. We both had decent voices and joined the Church Choir...St. James's Church Riddlesdown, Purley in the County of Surrey. I started out as a treble but once my voice broke I found myself able to fulfill my duties as an alto; tenor (first and second) baritone and even basso profundo...that very much depended on my health! If I had a bad cold then my voice dropped another octave. I suppose I would have to say that the gift of a good voice did help me in the latter years of my life.

  • DEEP PURPLE, RHAPSODY in ROCK De Laquelle Tout Ce Qui Précède Ou Succède, Est Le Plus Souvent Négligé Et Minimisé

  • Pierre Alexandre Tremblay
Pierre Alexandre Tremblay What is noise (music) to you? If we take the musical act as expression, therefore communication, then signal theory forces us to accept every sound as music as long as it is intended to be. What is not intended is noise, even in the form of a Bach partita played next door when I want to listen to Bernhard Günter. Music as art is a statement of intent, and everything (and only what) the artist wants to produce is the work. There is only noise in non-intent. That definition of music versus noise, in line with Varèse’s “organised sound,” has a contradicting sibling in my practice: I like to embrace uncertainty, the unexpected, and instability fascinates me as it reminds me of living things. Only human thoughts and models can dream up abstract perfection, and I prefer the filthy, gritty, humid, sticky unevenness of nature. So music, as human construct, contrasts with noise as the undesired artefact of reality. In that respect, we could take the harmonicity of a signal to declare it pure, and inharmonicity to be noisy … quite a boring scale, but quite useful, and definitely in phase with the ideals of consistency in instrument making and performance practice of the Western world. This scale has its limits though, as there are perceptual limits to saturation. One is Gestalt grouping, when accumulation becomes too dense; another is that we perceive in contrasts and get used to anything that is constant, even information overload. Therefore I like to think of this axis as being curved, with the maximum noisiness at the peak of perceptual saturation.
