Sua Maestà Storm Elvin Thorgerson” S1:E3 “Sua Maestà Storm Elvin Thorgerson” Storm Thorgerson è il re del movimento evolutivo visuale del rock, le sue opere sono entrate a far parte della memoria collettiva per la loro originalità e carica espressiva e in cui si “divertiva a citare: “… tra gli altri Magritte, Kandinsky e Picasso.” Nato in Inghilterra il 28 febbraio 1944 a Potters Bar, nel Middlesex, aveva radici norvegesi. Studiò alla Summerhill e alla Brunswick di Cambridge, ma fu alla High School for Boys del Cambridgeshire che incontrò Syd Barrett e Roger Waters. Si laureò con lode in inglese e filosofia all’Università di Leicester e conseguì il master in cinema e televisione al Royal College of Art. Nel 1968 inizia la sua carriera professionale insieme ad Aubrey Powell, fondando lo studio di arte grafica Hipgnosis, culla creativa per la quale produce una lunga serie di rivoluzionarie cover di album discografici, ha scritto la storia del rock lavorando con Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett, The Nice, Led Zeppelin, Brand X, 10cc, Peter Gabriel, AC/DC e moltissimi altri. Il suo lavoro era frutto di un’intensa collaborazione con gli artisti, con cui analizzava la genesi del disco e ne studiava i testi fino ad assimilarne il significato e tradurlo in un’opera d’arte visuale. È interessante notare che, nonostante l’approfondita analisi del contenuto musicale, Thorgerson esercita il diritto creativo come artista autore della copertina, non vuole semplicemente rappresentare il progetto musicale, lo vuole evocare catalizzando l’attenzione del pubblico eccitandone l’immaginazione. La peculiarità di Thorgerson è l’elemento surreale, che ricorre nella struttura di tutti i suoi lavori. Subisce l’influenza di Magritte, rivelata dalla presenza di oggetti reali posti in contesti in cui assumono un nuovo significato, non prevedibile e totalmente immaginario. È un visionario surrealista che si getta nel futuro, interiorizza le intuizioni di Magritte e le sottopone a una profonda riflessione, che trasforma nelle raffinate immagini ottenute tramite la fotografia, le esposizioni multiple, i fotomontaggi. Nel 1998, il giornalista Steven Cerio intervista Thorgerson sull’influenza di Magritte nei suoi lavori, Thorgerson risponde: “Il nostro primo libro, che è del 1978, venne chiamato Walk Away René perché pensavamo di esserci lasciati quell’influenza alle spalle, ma la gente diceva che eravamo comunque Surrealisti. Credo che le nostre opere non siano così strane come le sue. Non credo che la mucca (Atom Heart Mother), Ummagumma o Division Bell siano lontanamente come Magritte“. Thorgerson ridimensiona il suo legame con il pittore surrealista, in realtà non ne rinnega il peso, lo riconosce facendogli omaggio con citazioni esplicite in alcune sue opere. Tra i suoi lavori più significativi sono le copertine realizzare per Alan Parson Project, di cui amo in particolare l’ouroboro, il serpente che morde la propria coda di Vulture Culture, è una cover molto rappresentativa del lavoro concettuale di Thorgerson, che ha una struttura circolare, con le sue opere ci provoca dandoci mille indizi, ci induce a seguire il percorso visuale portandoci alla destinazione, ma quando crediamo di aver compreso il messaggio, ci accorgiamo che abbiamo già ripreso il viaggio, avviluppati in un loop mentale dove non c’è inizio e non c’è fine. L’osservatore non è però mai sopraffatto, non ci sono limiti grazie all’uso di paesaggi naturali di estrema apertura, che danno sempre respiro e vita alla libera interpretazione. Thorgerson non aveva solo la freccia magrittiana nel suo arco, amava William Blake, Salvador Dalì e Luis Buñuel, ha alimentato la sua geniale immaginazione con ricerche continue, facendo germogliare anche le mille letture, come nel caso del libro di fantascienza Childhood’s End di Arthur C. Clarke, che ha ispirato copertina di Houses of the Holy dei Led Zeppelin. La storia narra che Thorgerson e Powell incontrarono i Led Zeppelin, di ritorno dal tour in Giappone, a Victoria Station e mostrarono loro le tavole poste nel bagagliaio dell’auto. Led Zeppelin – Houses Of The Holy Questo episodio accadde due mesi dopo la pubblicazione della copertina di The dark side of the Moon, una delle le più celebri copertine della storia e una delle tante che Thorgerson ha progettato per i Pink Floyd. Si ispira al processo di rifrazione della luce attraverso un prisma di vetro, collabora con l’illustratore George Hardie, che la disegna secondo i tratti essenziali che ben conosciamo. È un omaggio ad Alex Steinweiss, padre dell’arte figurativa legata alla musica e alla sua copertina della Sonata per pianoforte no. 5 di Beethoven. Pink Floyd – The dark side of the Moon Nei Primi anni ’90 Thorgerson fonda la società di design StormStudios insieme al designer Peter Curzon, al fotografo Rupert Truman e all’illustratore Dan Abbot. La Società è tutt’ora attiva in vari campi del design, con progetti di copertine di album per Pink Floyd, Muse, Biffy Clyro, Steve Miller Band, Ian Dury e The Blockheads, Pendulum, The Cranberries, The Mars Volta, Alan Parsons e molti altri. Thorgerson è autore di lungometraggi, documentari televisivi, video musicali e molti libri, tra cui: Classic Album Covers of 60s(1989); Mind over Matter (1997); 100 Best Album Covers (1999); Raging Storm (2011); The Gathering Storm (2013), ultimo libro di memorie pubblicato postumo nel settembre 2013, dedicato alla storia artistica cinquantennale di Thorgerson dalle origini con Hipgnosis a StormStudios. Nel 2003 subisce un grave ictus, successivamente gli viene diagnosticato un cancro contro cui ha lottato a lungo, cedendo alla morte nella primavera del 2013, a 69 anni. Il premio Prog Magazine è stato ribattezzato Storm Grand Thorgerson Award in suo onore. Dopo la sua morte, l’amico d’infanzia David Gilmour parla in sua memoria nell’ultimo episodio del podcast ‘The Lost Art of Conversation’: “Avevo 13 anni, lui ne aveva 15. Era un chiacchierone e rimase così per tutta la vita. È stato il motore dietro la maggior parte delle nostre opere d’arte fino alla sua morte. Era una persona con idee geniali. Voleva sempre fare tutto correttamente, qualunque cosa costasse!”…”una forza costante nella sua vita, sia sul piano lavorativo che umano, una spalla sulla quale piangere, e un grande amico“. Syd, grande amico e membro della band fino al 1968, lasciò i Pink Floyd per problemi psichici legati all’abuso di LSD. Syd apparve senza preavviso nel mezzo di una sessione di registrazione e venne riconosciuto a fatica dagli altri. Era molto ingrassato ed aveva la testa e le sopracciglia rasate.     STORM THORGERSON Storm Thorgerson was the man behind some of the most iconic im- ages in the history of Rock and Roll. He was the genius sleeve design- er behind the weird and wonderful images of Led Zeppelin, Gene- sis, Ian Dury and the Mars Volta. He is best known for his crucial role in creating Pink Floyd’s progressive aesthetic. Storm Thorgerson was an English artist, graphic designer, film maker and tennis fiend. He was born in Potters Bar, Middlesex on 28 February 1944. Whilst at the Royal College of Art in London, Thorgerson shared a flat in South Kensington with his friend Aubrey Powell. It soon became a swinging sixties hub for a variety of artistic and musical characters. Together Aubrey and Thorgerson formed Hipgnosis, the preemi- nent and most visionary album art design firm in the world. Hipgno- sis’ client list included Genesis, Yes, 10cc, Bad Company and Paul McCartney and Wings. In 1987, following the dissolution of Hipgno- sis, Thorgerson formed his own design studio called Storm Studios. He went into video directing and made TV documentaries, includ- ing “The Art of Tripping” (1993), which investigated the effect of drugs on creativity, and a science documentary called “Rubber Uni- verse” (1994). He designed album artwork for more recent artists such as the Cranberries, Anthrax, Audioslave and Biffy Clyro and continued to work on Pink Floyd projects. In March 1973 one of the most successful albums of all time was released: Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of the Moon”.The artwork for the album, which was designed by Storm Thorgerson, has become as famous and iconic as the music.

Previously unseen photographs taken on seaside holidays and other family occasions show us a happy and loving young man, smiling energetically in images that map his early life, from childhood through his teenage years. Along with newly available photos from the album cover shoots for The Madcap Laughs and Barrett (taken by Storm Thorgerson and Mick Rock) they reveal the positive energy of a grinning Syd as he fools about in front of the camera. I was young and naïve; I figured, one can but ask…) they might be interested in my work. ã Rutherford 1980 To my astonishment, I was invited to meet founder Storm Thorgerson (who, with Aubrey Powell, had pioneered photoshopping before the word) who was kind enough to agree to see this young photographer and to offer me a critique of the half-dozen black & white prints that (in the hope of arranging just such a meeting) I had brought with me from Canada. Passionate and intelligent in equal measure, as he looked through my work, he asked questions that required me to re-evaluate my work – to consider the decisions I had made (both those in camera and those I had made in interpreting the negative in the darkroom) in relation to my intention: Did they work? And how did I know? What I learned from his questions – and from the answers he elicited from me – made me a better photographer. As he considered each photograph, I marvelled to find myself sitting in the basewomb from which had come many of the album covers for Genesis, Led Zeppelin, and (The) Pink Floyd (some of which are fine art in their own right) over which I had poured – while Storm Thorgerson offered cogent advice on ‘developing my voice’ in visual communication.

    Malcolm Jones The Making Of The Madcap Laughs 21st Anniversary Edition Courtesy of www.Brain-Damage.co.uk Preface This publication was written and published, in a private printing, by renowned producer Malcolm Jones in 1982. It was since reprinted in a limited run by the Orange Sunshine (Pill) Press in 1986, and sold through the pages of Syd Barrett fanzines Opel and Terrapin (both of which have been defunct for some time). In 1997, arrangements were being made for Brain Damage, the International Pink Floyd Magazine, to do a fresh printing of this work. Tragically, shortly after publishing an interview with Malcolm, and commencing arrangements for this, Malcolm passed away. The desire to make this important and fascinating work available again to all Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett fans, has never died. With the return of Brain Damage, this time as a website, the opportunity to rekindle this project arose. This new, twenty-first anniversary edition of the “The Making of The Madcap Laughs” is being made available as a tribute to Malcolm Jones. We have faithfully transcribed from the original, to ensure this is the most complete version currently available. In the last few years, there have been a few different versions available, both electronically, and printed, most of which have errors, omissions or “corrections” from Malcolm’s original text. This edition hopefully corrects all those errors and amendments, and is as Malcolm intended from his original notes and memories.
