“Shine on you crazy diamond” è dedicata a lui.” Edizione: Edizione 30. • Book Proposal 3
Rock and Roll has Tender Moments too... ! Photographs by Chalkie Davies 1973-1988 ! For as long as I can remember people have suggested that I write a book, citing both my exploits in Rock and Roll from 1973-1988 and my story telling abilities. After all, with my position as staff photographer on the NME and later The Face and Arena, I collected pop stars like others collected stamps, I was not happy until I had photographed everyone who interested me. However, given that the access I had to my friends and clients was often unlimited and 24/7 I did not feel it was fair to them that I should write it all down. I refused all offers. Then in 2010 I was approached by the National Museum of Wales, they wanted to put on a retrospective of my work, this gave me a special opportunity. In 1988 I gave up Rock and Roll, I no longer enjoyed the music and, quite simply, too many of my friends had died, I feared I might be next. So I put all of my negatives into storage at a friends Studio and decided that maybe 25 years later the images you see here might be of some cultural significance, that they might be seen as more than just pictures of Rock Stars, Pop Bands and Punks. That they even might be worthy of a Museum. So when the Museum approached me three years ago with the idea of a large six month Retrospective in 2015 I agreed, and thought of doing the usual thing and making a Catalogue.

  • Designer.Thorgerson
STORM THORGERSON Storm Thorgerson was the man behind some of the most iconic im- ages in the history of Rock and Roll. He was the genius sleeve design- er behind the weird and wonderful images of Led Zeppelin, Gene- sis, Ian Dury and the Mars Volta. He is best known for his crucial role in creating Pink Floyd’s progressive aesthetic. Storm Thorgerson was an English artist, graphic designer, film maker and tennis fiend. He was born in Potters Bar, Middlesex on 28 February 1944. Whilst at the Royal College of Art in London, Thorgerson shared a flat in South Kensington with his friend Aubrey Powell. It soon became a swinging sixties hub for a variety of artistic and musical characters. Together Aubrey and Thorgerson formed Hipgnosis, the preemi- nent and most visionary album art design firm in the world. Hipgno- sis’ client list included Genesis, Yes, 10cc, Bad Company and Paul McCartney and Wings. In 1987, following the dissolution of Hipgno- sis, Thorgerson formed his own design studio called Storm Studios. He went into video directing and made TV documentaries, includ- ing “The Art of Tripping” (1993), which investigated the effect of drugs on creativity, and a science documentary called “Rubber Uni- verse” (1994). He designed album artwork for more recent artists such as the Cranberries, Anthrax, Audioslave and Biffy Clyro and continued to work on Pink Floyd projects. In March 1973 one of the most successful albums of all time was released: Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of the Moon”.The artwork for the album, which was designed by Storm Thorgerson, has become as famous and iconic as the music.

Written evidence submitted by Christian Castle November 16, 2020 Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee UK Parliament Inquiry on the Economics of Music Streaming Thank you for the opportunity to comment on the economics of music streaming. This comment addresses a number of questions raised by the Committee including a discussion of dominant business models, the impact of algorithms, long term effects of the dominant business models, alternate approaches and specific recommendations for the role I respectfully suggest that government could play in approaching the problem. I am a music lawyer in Austin, Texas and have been actively involved in the traditional music business as a musician and lawyer for many years at companies like A&M Records in Hollywood, Sony Music in New York, and in private practice. I have worked on these policy issues for the digital music business since its inception, which drew me to Silicon Valley in 1998 when I worked with clients such as the original Napster.1 My biography is available on our firm website.2 While I do not address the Committee’s question on piracy directly, I would respectfully say that the solid work of the European Parliament on the Directive on Copyright In the Digital Single Market should be supported in spirit and that the UK has the opportunity to lead the way in building upon that work to protect creators of all categories. For too long the various safe harbors available online have degenerated from well-meaning efforts at encouraging development of the Internet into mere alibis for what would otherwise be massive crimes.

  • PINK FLOYD ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM DETAILS - the Endless River, Release Date 10 November
2014-09-22 16:05 CEST PINK FLOYD ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM DETAILS - The Endless River, release date 10 november. Details about The Endless River, the new Pink Floyd album from David Gilmour, Rick Wright and Nick Mason, were revealed today as the album artwork appeared on buildings in ten international cities, including an eight metre lit installation on London’s South Bank. The album will be released on Parlophone on 10 November and is produced by David Gilmour, Phil Manzanera, Youth and Andy Jackson. David Gilmour said: “The Endless River has as its starting point the music that came from the 1993 Division Bell sessions. We listened to over 20 hours of the three of us playing together and selected the music we wanted to work on for the new album. Over the last year we've added new parts, re-recorded others and generally harnessed studio technology to make a 21st century Pink Floyd album. With Rick gone, and with him the chance of ever doing it again, it feels right that these revisited and reworked tracks should be made available as part of our repertoire.” Nick Mason said: “The Endless River is a tribute to Rick. I think this record is a good way of recognizing a lot of what he does and how his playing was at the heart of the Pink Floyd sound. Listening back to the sessions, it really brought home to me what a special player he was.” The Endless River is mainly an instrumental album across ‘four sides’ with one song, ‘Louder Than Words’ with new lyrics by Polly Samson.

  • Eyes and Ears
Issue 168 Eyes and Ears Diego Perrone’s audio, visual world ‘One Of These Days’, the opening track on Pink Floyd’s 1971 albumMeddle , is an instrumental, save for a single sentence spoken by the drummer Nick Mason: ‘One of these days I’m going to cut you into little pieces.’ Mason’s voice is distorted and slowed down to such a degree that it sounds like that of an evil cartoon character, and it’s hard to understand what he says, though his menacing tone is clear enough. There is an iridescent, psychedelic colour photograph of a brownish thing against a turquoise background on Meddle’s cover (designed, as numerous other Floyd covers were, by Hipgnosis); only once you open the gatefold sleeve does it become apparent that this image is Untitled, 2014, glass casting, 87 × 73 × 12 cm. All actually a close-up of an ear underwater, surrounded by circular ripples that images courtesy the artist, Massimo De Carlo, look as if they’ve been caused by sonic vibrations. Discerning whether this ear London, and Casey Kaplan, New York is attached to a body or has been cut off is left to the viewer’s imagination. A self-confessed teenage fan of Pink Floyd, Diego Perrone has always been fascinated by our inborn capacity to apprehend sound, and the ways in which it can be distorted and contorted. Perrone’s approach to making art – from video and digital animation to painting and cast sculpture – is defined more by how a work is perceived visually than aurally. And yet, during a recent conversation, he claimed never to have thought about this emphasis on the auditory dimension of his work.

  • Barrett Vol 1.Pdf
Introduction usician, psychedelic explorer, eccentric, cult icon – Roger “Syd” Barrett was many things to many people. Created in conjunction with the Barrett family and The Estate of Roger Barrett, who have provided unprece- dented access to family photographs, artworks, and mem- Mories, Barrett offers an intimate portrait of the Syd known only to his family and closest friends. Previously unseen photographs taken on seaside holidays and other family occasions show us a happy and loving young man, smiling energetically in images that map his early life, from childhood through his teenage years. Along with newly available photos from the album cover shoots for The Madcap Laughs and Barrett (taken by Storm Thorgerson and Mick Rock) they reveal the positive energy of a grinning Syd as he fools about in front of the camera. We are offered a rare glimpse of one who was immensely popular among friends and contemporaries. Also contained within these pages are recently unearthed images of Pink Floyd in which we see Syd practising handstands, making muscle-man poses, and having fun. The other members of Floyd lark about too – a fledgling young band enjoying itself with a sense of real camaraderie. The images transport one back in time to 166–67: the London Free School gigs, the launch of International Times at the Roundhouse, the UFO club, the band’s first European dates. There are photos of Syd and Floyd at numerous locations and events, giving a real sense of what it must have been like to be there as the infant light shows, experimentation, and collective spirit of the time emerged, grew, and flourished in the psychedelic hothouse that was the late 160s.
