2016 was a very good season to be President of OBU.

The highlight was the Premier Team winning the Swindale Shield for the first time in the history of our club, in a record breaking first round. By season's end our Colts Green side had won both rounds of their competition, as had the Senior First Wolfpack. The Reserve Grade Championship final involved two of our teams and was won by the Pink Ginners over The Righteous Brothers. The Final was played in awful conditions at Te Whaea and both teams played fantastically well.

Our Premier Reserves did incredibly well, competing for the Hardham Cup while backing up for the Premier Team as well. Really good club spirit. The Women's team won the Challenge Cup, a great effort.

I regret that poor health did not allow me to see as many games as I would like. I was, however, lucky to be invited to the Junior Club Prize giving, held at NZRU Headquarters. It was a real pleasure to see all the young kids, parents and coaches enjoying themselves. Alastair Forde and his volunteers are doing a fantastic job.

cannot honestly present my report without commenting on the huge disappointment we endured when we were eliminated from the Jubilee Cup Semi Finals. In my opinion, the interpretation of the rules, and the final negative outcome was wrong, and unfair. A very poor piece of interpretation & administration by the WRFU. The action our club took was honourable and correct and the decision not to pursue the matter further in the Court of Appeal was a credit to our team and management. OBU must remain committed to ensuring and encouraging WRFU to maintain the highest standard of governance for our game.

Our Club is very well run, we have some brilliant people in key positions, especially Club Chairman, Treasurer, Club Captain, Secretary, Rugby Development Officer, Director of Rugby and WRFU Delegate.

Thanks to all Executive Committee members and club members who contributed this year and made us a top club.

Special mention must be made of all our Coaches, Managers and support staff, thanks for all you do.

Also thanks to our Supporters, it is great to see following we are increasingly getting. In 2017 we will celebrate our 25th anniversary of the amalgamation and forming of OBU, we look forward to an exciting and successful season

3. Chairman’s Report

2016 was another successful year for Wellington College Old Boys and Victoria University of Wellington Rugby Football Club Incorporated (“OBU”).

There were many highlights during the 2016 season with our men’s premier team securing OBU’s first Swindale Shield. The team dominated the Swindale Shield round securing the title with one week to spare. Our success continued with our under 21 Colts Green securing the Paris Memorial Trophy and the John E Kelly Cup, our First Grade team (Wolf Pack) securing the Thompson Memorial and Johnsonville Centennium Cups, our Premier Women securing the Challenge Cup and the Pink Ginners the Alan Seerup Cup. The remainder of our teams performed admirably throughout the season.

In March 2016, we launched our inaugural OBU Academy in partnership with Victoria University of Wellington (“VUW”). The academy aims to provide an intensive development programme helping to upskill some of our most promising players, on and off the field. The Academy met our expectations in its inaugural year and is set to continue in 2017. Thank you to Zac Feaunati who manned a number of the academy classes, and Karl Whalen at VUW who dedicated his team’s resources to the Academy which ultimately provided the platform for a successful year.

As always, the Executive Committee of OBU worked tirelessly to ensure the club’s operations ran smoothly with few surprises. Richard Boag, a club secretary, continues on his quest for automation (or as it is known in the media digital disruption) while ensuring our subscription recoveries are amongst the best of any club in New Zealand. Our Club Captain Maree Chivers has had a fantastic debut year in her roll and has exceeded expectations across the board. The rest of the Committee has worked hard and have all given up many evenings and hours to advancing OBU as a club, thank you.

Financially, OBU did relatively well in the 2016 financial year, however our reserves continue to decline, albeit slowly. The operating expenses amounted to $293,746.00 for the 2016 year up from $255,712.00 in the 2015 year.

Several changes are readily apparent in the financial statements for 2015 and 2016. First, our grant approvals increased by circa $57,000.00 in the 2016 year to $161,236.00. Against that, our coaching and training costs increased from $66,000.00 to $80,612.00, whilst consulting and accounting costs increased by some $15,000.00.

While additional funding has been obtained to ensure OBU offers the best club rugby experience in Wellington, this resulted in a deficit of $5,564.00 for the financial year. As Chairman I hope to see the club operate at a surplus in every financial year. Unfortunately the financial constraints upon clubs such as OBU continue to grow. We will continue to cut our cloth to ensure that we make ends meet in 2017; however, the margins will once again be finely balanced at the end of the 2017 financial year as while our grants success has increased our operating costs have also increased.

The importance of our sponsors and ongoing key stakeholder relationships cannot be underestimated. To ensure that OBU remains financially viable and secure for future generations of OBU players and members we should maintain and grow these relationships. Without naming all of our sponsors, I wish to extend a warm thank you to all sponsors for the support in the 2016 season and thank those sponsors who are continuing with us in the 2017 season. One change that is noteworthy and will be apparent from the start of the 2017 season is our sponsored premier jerseys. Several OBU related businesses have got behind the club and agreed to sponsor jerseys 1-22 with all sponsorship money being credited to the club accounts. I hope everyone at OBU supports our jersey sponsors where the opportunity arises.

While most our volunteers have re-committed to OBU in 2017 some have moved on (although they are still part of the OBU family). While I cannot name everyone in this brief report, Mark Larsen (our NZU Rep) and Jeremy Little (Jubilee Cup and Swindale Shield wining coach) have moved on to focus on their family obligations. While we have lost great talent in these two gentlemen I’m assured we remain in good hands with the return of Paddy Gough to assist our premier coach Jamie Williams in our coaching ranks whilst Patches O’Houlahan looks set to front up for another season of goat rugby.

We also extend a warm thanks to Terry Reilly & Associates who have been the clubs auditors for more years than I can recall and have hung up their boots at the conclusion of this years AGM. Terry and his team have kept OBU on the straight and narrow for many years and their work has been of the highest quality and is greatly appreciated.

2017 promises once again to be an exciting season for OBU. Our club membership is in good heart, whilst our playing stocks remain strong.

We intend to continue with our on-field success across the board, while planning for OBU’s 25th Anniversary on Queens Birthday weekend. This promises to be a fantastic weekend which will bring a lot of our members and supporters out of the woodwork to Wellington for a weekend of celebrations. Pencil this into your diaries now and go the “Goats “in 2017.

6. Hon Solicitor’s Report

Report received from Hon Solicitor covered in Chairman’s Report

7. WRFU Delegate’s Report

The responsibilities of the position of WRFU Delegate is set out in the OBU Constitution as:

 To liaise with other members of the Club to gauge feedback on relevant club issues.  To offer support or help to other Club Committee members.  To attend all WRFU Board meetings. If unable to do so, then give apology notice to WRFU Amateur Department and advise the Club’s alternate.  To be the conduit between the Club and WRFU Board ensuring two-way communication occurs.  Represent the Club at WRFU Board and WRFU Board at the Club, with representations always being balanced with the need to act in the best interests of rugby in Wellington.  To act as a liaison officer/volunteer for WRFU events/Club rugby activities.  To sit on sub-committees (including Disciplinary) within the WRFU Board to set and monitor rugby policy decisions.

NOTE: Attended all meetings (including WRB, CRSC, Wellington Sevens Fans Advisory Group & NZRU Sevens Think Tank), numerous club games and grade finals, WRFU Awards & AGM as well as 4 disciplinary sub committees. Therefore, all responsibilities (above) have been fulfilled in the 2016 OBU financial year and continue into 2017 subject to re-appointment at the AGM.

2016 Summary:

The 2016 year was a year of ongoing discussion around the premier grade structure and the makeup of the 2017 competition. The WRFU embarked on another survey of players, clubs, referees, coaches, RDO’s, administrators, officials and fans in order to identify and establish a consensus around such issues as:

 Representative player availability for Jubilee/ Hardham Cup semi-finals and finals  Season commencement  Season structure (full round robin) and therefore length  Preference for mid-week night games or double headers  Quality of grounds  Kick off times

Return to Contents Page 19

2016 Annual Report: Wellington College Old Boys & Victoria University of Wellington Rugby Football Club Inc Click Here to Return to Contents

All this information has been gathered and the results have helped to shape the recently released 2017 season format.

The WRFU also underwent a independent review by Dame Margaret Bazley of the unions conduct and recruitment processes in the wake of public uproar over the handling of the Wellington Academy player Losi Filipo. The review made the following recommendations:

1. Include more women in the administration of the game. 2. A task force should be created to design a new system of standards, policies and documents, including a new code of conduct which encompasses off-field behaviour. 3. A 10-year plan be initiated with the goal of bringing the WRFU’s cultural norms more in line with the expectations of modern society.

4. All committees and panels set up to develop the change plan have at least two women and one outside expert.

Club Chairman’s meetings have been re-established to include club chairs in the process and ensure that Chairman, WRB delegates and the WRFU are in regular communication and fully updated on current and relevant matters.

The WRFU CEO Steve Rogers continues to manage day to day operations with the Board managing governance including profitability.

The 2016 season introduced a grade where U21 second teams were able to opt for uncontested scrums if they are unable to supply front row forwards. This proved successful and played a big part in keeping players in the game.

The 2016 season was a further move forward for the WRB, with delegates communicating outside meetings over club matters and resolving issues before they arose or before they were passed to the union for judgement (e.g. rescheduling games to avoid defaults).

On a personal note, it was a pleasure to represent OBURFC and I look forward to continuing in the upcoming 2017 season.

Ian Cuff WRFU Delegate

8. Junior Club Convenor’s Report

It was pleasing to see that we increased our registrations to 59 in 2016. The growth being in the Under 6 and Under 7 players. This is vital for the club as the junior rugby base has to be large at this level to enable us to field teams when the size of teams increase in the 8 to 12 yrs from 7 to 10 and then to 15.

In 2016 we had four teams in the OBU Kids colours and one side combined with the Wellington Club at Under 12. The teams were Under 6 Wilsons coached by Anthony Taylor, Under 7 Sadlers coached by Jessie and Dylan Johnson, Under 7 Prestons coached by Bryn Jones and the Under 9 Steinmetz coached by Troy Newton, Carl Grant and Albie Rotham. We also combined a team with Wellington Club at Under 11 which was assisted by Ian Cuff and Paul Barton. Our under 9 side was a combination of players that were eligible for Under 8 and Under 9. This team struggled at times particularly at the start of the season where they were playing teams that had a year’s tackle experience. With hindsight, this experiment did not work especially well, with the majority of the players being Under 8 eligible. The extra year’s experience and a bit more maturity was very evident in the games. The club had two successful club days at the start of the season which introduced new parents and players and brought together the teams from last year. We also had team breakfasts for each side at the start of the season at the Cambridge Hotel. Our end of year prise giving was a great success at the NZRFU function room. Our thanks to Jessie Johnston for arranging the venue. Thanks to our sponsors TSB Bank and Hell Pizzas, as well as Richard Boag and Dave Loveridge for their assistance during the year.

Part way through the year, Mark Larsen stood down as OBU’s Delegate to the NZ Universities Rugby Council. Many thanks to Mark for his great representation over a number of years.

With the cancellation of the Kanto tour NZ in 2016, NZU played a match against Poverty Bay for the Wananga Toa Trophy – called Te Whao (the Chisel). This trophy is now on display in the OBU Clubrooms, Cambridge Hotel and a background to this trophy appears later in the Annual Report. OBU was well represented in the NZU team, this is covered in the Representative Players section.

Despite the cancelation, NZURC remains positive about its relationship with Japanese rugby and with their & NZRU’s ongoing support, will continue to add to the NZ rugby mix. Some excellent news at the NZURC AGM was the confirmation of the continuation of the sponsorship from ANZCO and Nissui to 2020. This sponsorship has been going on since 2003 and its value over that time is near on $NZ 2m. so this is a vital relationship for NZ Universities Rugby and indeed NZ Rugby. A very warm thank you to Sir Graeme Harrison for facilitating this outstanding sponsorship.

NZU has continued their recent focus on Women’s Rugby with combining with University & Tertiary Sport NZ to send a team to International Women’s University Seven’s Tournament held in Wales. OBU was well represented with the Coach being Zak Feaunati and a number of players – details in Women’s Team report. 2017 will continue this with confirmation of the National Tertiary Women’s Seven’s Championship to be played in Palmerston North

Thanks to OBU Vice President and Life Member of NZURC Roger Drummond for his continued leadership of NZURC and of course to the other members of the council, sponsors and supporters who continue to ensure NZU Rugby thrives.

11. Club Captain's Report

2016 was another successful year for the club from a club captain’s point of view. We had good representation across all grades and all teams conducted themselves well on and off the field. The launch of the OBU/Victoria University Rugby Academy this year will continue to bring benefits to the club by making better players and better people. The club also maintained a good relationship with the WRFU.

There are some issues that the club faced in 2016:

The university holiday period continues to be a challenging time for our three colts’ teams and our Under 85Kg teams. During this time a lot of players were unavailable. The WRFU was understanding of our predicament and where possible gave us favourable draws. We also successfully managed players between the three colts’ teams. Even with taking these measures we still had to default some games and withdrew the Spartans from the second round. I believe this process can be better managed in 2017.

The club has traditionally had a large number of teams in the Under 85kg and Reserve grades and we look to re-establish this moving forward as well as the possible addition of the Antiques (presidents grade) in 2017.

Training facilities are good although cramped and we thank everyone for their understanding and patience as we try to provide training opportunities as requested and needed.

Sevens is a growing and successful part of the rugby year. This year we needed to charge a sub so the teams could participate in tournaments. We will need to plan and budget for our sevens programme moving forward.

In order to continue to be a highly successful club I consider that these issues will need to be addressed in 2017.

Maree Chivers Club Captain

12. Reserve Grade Convenor's Report

While 2015 may have been the year of the Bears, it is one thing to emerge at the of head the pack and another thing entirely to stay there. Like huskies pulling a sled, the Brothers, Ginners and 69ers had grown tired of staring at the Teds' dirty arse and were each determined to improve their view.

And it didn't take long to cut the Teds down to size, with the Brothers getting first crack at the Ruru Shield in the opening game of the season. The signs were ominous before the whistle had even blown, with Big Red separated from his locking partner Big James who had been wooed by the classy sheilas out at Pare-Plim - a decision he deeply regretted as not only did he get towelled up every week but he had to trade in his penchant for Cloudy Bay for a Pak'n save goon bag at each post-match function. Like a sunburnt Emperor Penguin, the loss of his mate left Big Red in a state of despair and he could not halt the Brothers juggernaut that unleashed a whole off-season of pent up fury in that opening fixture. It was not even close, as the Brothers, led by storming performances from Augusto, Fawkes and Steady Swinburn, ran away 31 - 5 to take the Ruru on a pub crawl.

The Ginners then got an immediate crack at the shield and threw the kitchen sink at it in the first half, but for all their pill and territory were reduced to taking shots at goal and could only walk off with a one point lead. The Brothers stepped up a gear in the second stanza with Fungus putting on a virtuoso display despite nearly losing his nuts as the victim of a nasty squirrel grip. The final score of 27 - 13 didn't really reflect the closeness of the contest, with the physicality of the game, notably the big defence of the Ginner's resident silver fox Tom, showing how brutal it was going to be for any team to hold onto the Ruru during the year.

And the Brothers couldn't hold on much longer, going down in their next defence after being carved up early by the 69ers midfield giving them a 14 point lead they never surrendered. Then the 9ers themselves fell victim to a Teds ambush, failing to defend the Ruru even once in a performance their affable managing director Moonlight referred to as "pretty ******* ****". Big Red had his grin back at least. Well he did, but then the Teds followed the pattern and also failed to defend their prize as the Brothers swooped back in once more. The Ruru could be forgiven for thinking it had been mistaken for the parcel at a 5-year-old's birthday party such was the ease with which it was being passed around. The Brothers at least put an end to that, once again putting paid to the Ginners in an Ian Galloway bog, with Masaga nearly killing a couple of his opponents as he channelled his inner Jerry Collins.

The final defence was the greatest of all, played in a gale force southerly and driving rain at Nairnville Park. The backs didn't see much pill, it's fair to say, as the forwards just set about brutalising each other. The injury toll mounted on both sides, with subs playing out of position and no one giving an inch. The 9ers, holding a 7 point lead with 10mins to go into the wind, were defending with their guts and it took an appearance from Pokies to finally crack them. The giant tighthead drew in 3 defenders on the line and rolled an offload for Fungus to dive over out wide, with Steady Swinburn absolutely shanking his conversion only for the wind to pick it up and swing it over the sticks. The tie was enough to put the Ruru away for the season.

Return to Contents Page 24

2016 Annual Report: Wellington College Old Boys & Victoria University of Wellington Rugby Football Club Inc Click Here to Return to Contents

The Brothers and 9ers met again the following week in the semifinal, both sides weakened from the previous encounter but the Brothers having enough depth to pull clear and move one win away from the title/Ruru combo. The Ginners however had started building their own form, and dispatched Wests (who had dropped down from Div 1) twice in consecutive weeks showing a ruthlessness to make it an all OBU final. And it was the Ginners who ultimately had the last laugh, scrapping their way into the lead with the Brothers a man in the bin and then putting together a classy and composed final 20mins to own the pill and close out a 2 point win. Manager Bob ran onto the field and took a victory humping from the squad for good measure.

Overall, a quality reserve grade season dusted with some epic derby games. The rivalries will be picked up again come 2017 with the Teds and 9ers no doubt keen to reverse the current pecking order.

15. 100 Club Captain’s Report

The OBU 100 Club is continuing to go from strength to strength and we intend to grow it further this coming season.

Net proceeds after prizes last season were $8,250.

The importance of the 100 Club to our Club was reflected by the Committee's decision that all members should receive a vest. The cost of the vests came out of the $8,250. Most jerseys haven't been collected by members and for those of you who haven't collected your jersey we will make every effort to get them to you before next season starts.

Last season we were delighted to have the support of the Wellington Employers Chamber of Commerce. A number of members went to the Chamber's function. This was a welcome addition to the benefits membership provides.

We would also like to thank the Hideaway for their support to the Club. We are now working on further benefits to members next season and the Club looks forward to your continuing support and we welcome new members.

17. DHC Wellington College Scholarships

OBU was very pleased to announce the establishment of the DHC Trust Scholarships in 2016. Two scholarships will be awarded each year to graduating Wellington College students who enrol to study at Victoria University of Wellington (or another regional tertiary provider) and who registers to play their rugby at OBU. The inaugural DHC Scholarship for 2016 was awarded to Adam Blackwell. It is anticipated that three scholarships of $2,000.00 each per annum will be awarded in 2017.

Applications for the scholarships were considered by Mr Roger Moses, Mr Doug Catley and Mr Dave “Trapper” Loveridge. We are extremely grateful for the support the DHC Trust has provided to OBU, without which the scholarship programme would not be possible.

In conjunction with the above and with the full support of OBU, the DHC Trust has made another significant contribution to Wellington College to enable the establishment of a Director of Rugby role. Lincoln Rawls was appointed to this role in 2016. OBU anticipates that the

18. Premier

2016 was a year of significant change for the OBU Premiers. Following a successful 2015, 19 players who played for the team in 2015 left the club, mainly due to moving out of Wellington. This included 10 players who featured in the 2015 Jubilee Cup final win. However, we did well with recruitment and other players got promoted within the club. 21 players made their debut for the team this year and all players added a lot to the team. There were changes to the coaching team as well. Paddy Gough stepped down as forwards coach, but we welcomed Bernie Upton to the team as his replacement. Bernie added a lot to the team with his knowledge and ability to relate well to the boys.

The season got off to a great start. We won the first Swindale Shield in the history of OBU, losing only one game in the process. This meant that our trophy cabinet was getting very full, as we won - Jack Lamason Cup (MSP), Marc Verhoeven Memorial Trophy (Petone), Wood Cup (Hutt Old Boys Marist), Dean Gifford Memorial (Wellington), Peter Dunford Trophy (Wainui) and the Swindale Shield.

There were many highlights in the Swindale Shield, with the team playing a very attacking brand of rugby and scoring some great tries. One big highlight was the opportunity to play at Westpac Stadium, as a curtain raiser to a Hurricanes game. To play at such a great venue, and to produce a commanding 32-6 win over the Wellington club, which included four push over tries, was a very special day.

We had a frustrating start to the Jubilee Cup, with a last minute loss to Upper Hutt. From then on we struggled to build momentum and finished the Jubilee Cup with four wins and three losses. Luck was not on our side in the Jubilee Cup, with a lot of season ending injuries to key players. Our best performance was in the last round, when we bet a strong Ories side in shocking weather conditions at the Polo Ground. Despite several regular starting players being injured, those that played took their opportunity and showed a lot of heart to win in trying conditions.

We missed qualifying for the semi finals in unusual circumstances. We were one of four teams on 19 points after the round robin, and only three could go through. While it was disappointing missing out due to a technicality, we appreciate the OBU Executive’s support in appealing the decision with Wellington Rugby Union.

We wish to congratulate the 21 OBU Premier players that were selected for various representative teams. From Tomasi Palu (Tonga) and Alex Barendregt (Netherlands) playing test rugby, through to the various players in Wellington representative teams, this is a great achievement. It really shows the opportunities that OBU can help provide for players aspiring to play for representative sides.

We would like to say a big thank you to the coaching team we had this year. Jeremy Little did a great job again in 2016 as head coach and will be missed next season. Jamie Williams did a fine job as backs coach and we are delighted that he has been appointed head coach for 2017. Bernie Upton was a strong addition to the team, as forwards coach. He was well respected by all the players and the club is sad to see him move on, but wish him well in 2017

We would also like to acknowledge the Premiers wider management team for all their support this year. Simon Chatterton (Trainer), Darragh Kenny (Physio), Peter Menhinick (Physio), Stu Holden (Videographer) and Hayden Smith (medic/management support) all made big contributions to the team.

Thank you to the sponsors for their support to both our team and the wider club throughout the year. Lastly, a big thank you to Jaesen Sumner, Chairman and the rest of the OBU Executive for their support throughout the season.

The OBU Impala’s had another good season with the return of Gary Hilsdon joining David Jensen as Co-Coaches. We saw the addition of more teams into the women’s competition but unfortunately played less games due to 2 defaults with only 12 games played.

The highlight of our season was winning the Challenge Cup off old foes North’s on Hiria’s 100th Cap at the Women’s Gala Day in Petone.

In the Fleur Trophy (first round) we won 7 (1 by default) and lost 2 games finishing 4th In the Victoria Tavern Trophy (second round) we won 2 (1 by default) lost 2 finishing 3rd Lost our semi-final against Ories unfortunately we were without the girls away with NZ Universities.

We celebrated 2 milestones within the team with Hiria McRae reaching her 100th Cap after an impressive rugby career for Waikato University and a number of other Wellington clubs before reaching her 100 caps for OBU and still going strong. No one will forget her 60 metre dash down the sideline for a try this season. Hiria also serves with Kendell Templeman on the WRFU Women’s Advisory Board. Charlotte Chivers reached her 50th Cap for OBU in our last game of the season at 18 years one of the youngest in the country to reach this milestone

2016 Annual Report: Wellington College Old Boys & Victoria University of Wellington Rugby Football Club Inc Click Here to Return to Contents having started playing for OBU at the age of 14. Charlotte also scored a game high 37 points in a game this season.

This year saw a New Zealand enter a team in the International Women’s University Seven’s Tournament held in Swansea. Unfortunately the results did not go NZs way but for the girls it was a great learning and life experience. Georgia Daals, Sauimoana Solia and Holly Macdonald represented NZU alongside Coach Zak Feauanati. Victoria University won the New Zealand Universities Tournament with Georgia Daals, Sauimoana Solia, Holly Macdonald, Hope Hakopa and Abbigail Weir part of that team.

Representative honours - Anna Darling, Sauimona Solia, Gina Williamson, Hope Hakopa, Kaycie Mosley and Georgia Daals made the 2016 Pride and Pride Development teams. Since added to Pride Development Hinerangi Temara, Georgia Scott, Malin Dolden, Abbigail Weir, and Te Aniwa Hurihanaganui coached by David Jensen.

Georgia Daals has continued to be involved in the Black Ferns wider training groups for both sevens and fifteens.

Others of our team have been part of the newly created Wellington Woman’s Tongan team with Hiria McRae and Shar Fagalilo coaching and Emma Hopoi and Losaline Hopoi playing.

2016 was indisputably a very successful year for OBU Wolfpack First Grade Team. At the start of the season, there were a lot of emotion and expectations after the administrative incident which disqualified our team to play the Finale despite beating Stokes Valley in the Semi. This energy carried through the wide season, resulting in an excellent outcome.

Our OBU Wolfpack Team was identified middle of March. As each year, we benefit from an excellent reservoir of senior players who like very much to play for our team, showing up 2 or 3 weeks before the season starts, enjoying physical training and great camaraderie in pre- warm up touch game style. We also welcomed new team members from across OBU grading.

Each year we have also an interesting and exciting mix of young talents and foreign players. In 2016, we had players arriving from England, Scotland, Ireland, Canada, France and newly Colombia. These players are a great asset to our game plan and are often very committed, with one player changing return flight to ensure he could play the finale against HOBM on 13 August 2016.

We started straight in the competition against North in 2 April (29-5). From this game, the team played exceptionally well, losing only one game in the first round against Petone Brotherhood, 18 June (15-25). Despite changing players between injuries, some away or unavailable for work and a short bench, the team still managed to lift the Thompson Memorial First Grade Cup while I was in France in May. I would like to take this opportunity to thanking Tim, Matt, Hamish and Brodie for looking after the team so well in my absence.

Then, the second round, we lost several foreign players who needed to return home. Also few injuries, inevitably, and players called for the Premiere reserve, making our bench slim. Nevertheless, coaches managed well to still keep high quality players and ensure key players could have a break when required. Our bonus this year was to work with different kicker who could do the job on the day, no matter the weather condition supported by a dynamic pack and a very strong versatile organised defence. Fitness of the players for the entire season was

Return to Contents Page 37

2016 Annual Report: Wellington College Old Boys & Victoria University of Wellington Rugby Football Club Inc Click Here to Return to Contents another important asset, reducing injuries and contributing to become the first Senior OBU Team to win both first and second round in the same year. Statistics and results demonstrate that with:

Another successful year for the Colts Green saw the team finish off the year with both first and second round trophies, regaining the Paris Memorial as overall winners following their 2015 semi-final loss. Led by the experienced Jack Green and Jared Martinovich, captain and vice- captain respectively, the team won 18 of 20 fixtures amassing a total of 658 points. At the heart of this points total was first year full-back Sam Reid who alone notched up 230 points through his prestigious boot and eye for the try line. Not to be outdone however were hooker Wirangi Parata and loosie Jarrod Gwynne who combined for 17 tries between them. Gwynne finished the season as the teams MVP, with notably mentions for Parata, first year Paddy Carter and Otene Williams. A team with an experienced core group of players combined with exciting new young talent provided for both structure and flair across the park in the teams play on their journey to success. This couldn’t have been implemented without the knowledge and coaching of Michael Barnes and James Bailey and manager Matt Loveridge, with support from Con Williams and Dan Mellon. With significant returning numbers in 2017, it looks set to be another strong team which will again compete for the title.

The Colts Green team would like to extend thanks and congratulations to both Barnsey and Bailey who will now move on to new coaching roles, with the OBU Premier team and Wellington Representative Rugby respectively.

I joined OBU Colts Black about 3-4 games into the season as their Manager.

The team were a great group of players and whilst not overly successful on the field, they never lacked determination.

We were somewhat hamstrung by University Holidays and restrictions with exams etc. and at times numbers on the field were an issue

Whilst we managed 2 wins for the season we were also on the end of a few heavy losses.

A lot of this was due to quality opposition and also the difficulties of working around University exams and other such obstacles.

There were a few problems chasing players for subs and this may need to be addressed in the 2017 season with an early season push for players to get those sorted or face stand downs until these have been paid.

The coach, Iofeta Matalasi and myself built a great rapport with the players as the season progressed and the lads never gave up trying !

27. Sixty-Niners

The Sixty Niners had 46 different players put the niner jersey on throughout the 2016 season. 11 of these players were new to the team and were named in one of the six Court Sessions held by Judge Thor throughout the year.

We also had three niners celebrate their 69th games. While the ginners were practising their set piece the sixty niners gathered in the NZ Rugby House basement car park and re-learnt their haka ‘Te Tangi a te Ruru’ which was unveiled for the first time in three and a half years against old foes the Righteous Brothers in the lead up to the final Ruru encounter (a 14-14 Draw) of 2016. The Sixty Niners then went on to lose their semi-final to the Righteous Brothers the following week.

As many of you would have seen on the tele, Emmett ‘Paris’ Vallender managed to fly the OBU and Sixty Niner flags high with his off field antics on this year’s season of The Block NZ. The auction night and final episode bought 53 niners, WAGs and children out into a local bar on Sunday the 14th of August to see Paris and Sam (a friend of the niners) win The Block NZ and break all previous records with a $480k haul.

Another very enjoyable year for all involved with the Soixante Neuf clan.

Winner Alan Seerup Cup – Reserve Grade Division II

The COBVURFC Pink Ginners AFASF 2016 season further enriched the team’s storied 44- year history. The start of our season was patchy. A large influx of new players resulted in some inconsistency at early stages. We had some success against other OBU teams - but we could not beat the Righteous Brothers (who became our 2016 nemesis).

However, we gained momentum as the year progressed. Whether this was due to growing familiarity, the cumulative effect of Coach Bob Coyle’s half time shouting, or a combination of both is difficult to tell. Regardless, the season ended in a flourish of clutch victories:

 In our (effective) quarterfinal, we beat Wests Mixed Veges by one point.  In a semi-final rematch against the Veges, we bested them again – this time by two points.  In a dramatic, evenly matched final, our season culminated in a spectacular (and 2016 first) victory over the Righteous Brothers by two points (again!)

Holders Jackie Ruru Shield

The Brothers stocks had suffered during 2015, but some solid off-season recruiting combined with the healing powers of cold summer beers saw a very healthy (in some cases about 10 kegs too healthy) squad assemble ready to light up Div 2 in 2016. The opening fixture threw up a Ruru challenge v the Teds, with neither side particularly well prepped to start off with a brutal clash but it was the Brothers who remembered enough about their past combinations to romp home and raise the Lion Browns in celebration. A defence was then immediately on the agenda the following week against the Ginners - a corker of a game dominated by the searing boot of Steady Swinburn that was only settled in the last 10mins when Fawkes finished off a bust triggered by a Dan Lambinator spin and offload. But the win came at a cost, with new backs recruit Jonesy doing a hammy.

The following week saw crisis stations triggered when Steady, Fungus and Naughty Nicky (the 10, 12 and 13 combo) all go down injured in the messy win against Para-Plim. Then the Lambinator did a rib the next week, meaning the loss of 5 starting backs in 3 weeks. Not ideal, but it did result in an early transition for Mr OBU standout Fin 'Dad Bod' Scott, who gave up hooking duties and showcased a remarkable range of skills including a booming spiral punt to ensconce himself as first choice second-five for the rest of the season. The loss of Steady for 8 weeks to a popped rib hurt the Brothers, with the 69ers capitalising immediately by swooping in to steal the Ruru. But the Brothers are accustomed to set-backs and quickly regrouped, with the arrival of Skux Masaga adding to an already formidable forward pack built on the brutality of Big August and Blake 'Small Man Syndrome' Chamberlain and the reliable defensive prowess of Machine, Shenty and Wazza. Though it's probably fair to say it's a good thing the new breakdown laws are dead in the water, as a number of the Brothers forwards still don't know what to do with the current ones. Ferigno, Tan Man and Danny Collins spend more time lying on the ball than running with it, while Blake is very familiar with the colour yellow.

The mid-season run was productive enough, with controversial last play losses to the 9ers and UH Pirates leaving the Brothers with a 6 - 4 record at the end of the first round. The backs had finally found their groove, even if Jonesy would reinjure his hammy every time he attempted to return. And as luck would have it the Teds demoralised the 9ers to reclaim the Ruru. The Brothers, now back at full strength and boasting ginger ninja Oakley at halfback, then dished out the same favour to the Teds. Again the Ginners got a crack at Ruru glory, and again they were dispatched, this time comprehensively as Masaga set about annihilating anyone who

Return to Contents Page 45

2016 Annual Report: Wellington College Old Boys & Victoria University of Wellington Rugby Football Club Inc Click Here to Return to Contents tried to tackle him. Pare-Plim got the same treatment the following week, as Lil Mike, Fungus and Nixon ripped them to shreds. Wests went the same way, leaving only a Ruru defence against the 9ers to wrap up the regular season. And what a brutal game it was. Howling gales and horizontal rain up at Nairnville was not conducive to open footy. Both backlines looked more like 5 year olds busting to take a leak as they tried to stop hypothermia from setting in. In a fitting finale it came down to the ugliest of conversions from Steady to tie up the scores at 14 a-piece and secure the Ruru for the year, but it came at a heavy cost with Masaga and Blake (and Jonesy again) injured.

The semi was a rematch at Te Whaea, with the Brothers cruising home with more secure footing against a fairly depleted 9ers team. The less said about the final the better. Pretty sure the Ginners will have that covered off. The better side on the day won. Revenge is the only KPI on the Brothers agenda for 2017.

31. Under 12 Conrad Smiths

Due to low OBU U12 junior numbers, 2016 saw the combination of an OBU and Wellington club combined under 12 team.

Mutual agreements were again reached around training venues (Hataitai Park and Boyd Wilson), team kit (alternating Wellington and OBU jerseys with club socks), Registrations etc.

The coaching staff was made up of 4 representatives from Wellington and two (Paul Barton & Ian Cuff) from OBU. The season was a struggle with the team unable to progress from its last year’s success. New inexperienced players were introduced and a few key 2015 stars were sorely missed. Benefits were received from both clubs including the ability to register in a number of tournaments (through OBU) that the other Wellington team (Wildfish) have entered exclusively in the past.

The highlight of the year was a team trip to Napier to meet the Wellington Lions and watch them beat the Magpies. As usual the 7 players from OBU held their own with Harry & Elliot making the U12 Wellington squad and picking up the MVP and Team player awards.

33. Under 7 Prestons

It was an exciting year of Rippa Rugby for the OBU U7 Prestons. After a big recruiting drive, the team was made up from the boys from Wadestown School, a mix of first timers and returners from the 2015 U6 Wilsons. Early Saturday morning starts were spent at Boyd Wilson Field learning the basic skills of the game, passing and catching, evading

and ripping. It was great to see the improvement in the returning players and the skills of the new comers. As the season began we were a ball of excitement. The experience of last season saw lots of rips and passes right from the start, whilst our running and

evasion skills saw many runaway tries. Storming runs into the opposition became a feature of some of the more experienced kids, whilst the timid players eased their way in. Keen involvement was shown by all in the pre-game training sessions. As the season progressed everyone improved with every game, timid boys that

had to be encouraged onto the field encouraging in the early games slowly caught their stride and were scoring runaway tries by seasons end.

2016 Summary:

The Young Sadlers, named after All Black great Joey, had a stellar 2016 year and included many players destined for greatness.

A quick Google search on Joey shows a young man dubbed the “pocket battleship”, known for his strength, ball playing ability and leg speed.

How fitting then that this group of mini-goats were to be named after this legend as these were exactly the qualities that they displayed.

Teams ventured to Boyd Wilson filled with hope, but all left with their tails between their legs. The speed was too much for Ories, the strength superior to the boys of Poneke and their ball playing ability blew the multiple Wests teams off the park.

But above all the kids always played rugby as it should be, with a smile on their face. Satisfied with a long run and willing to pass the ball around in order to help one another.

All in all it was a fantastic season enjoyed not least by the coaching staff. Special mention must go to the ever reliable parents bringing their kids to Boyd every Saturday morning without fail.

2017 holds bright things for this talented group of goats!

35 Under 6 Wilsons

The Under 6 Wilsons Rippa rugby team had 13 players this season with a great turnout most weekends. We had 5 girls and 8 boys, with three brother-sister pairs. As such we had a few younger players which were less involved than the older players, but seemed to like the run round.

The season had great fun, great involvement, and some great rugby. A real improvement in skill levels during the season was obvious, with passing the ball following the rips taking less time, and some real side-stepping runs undertaken. A lot of the kids wanted to be involved with running the ball from pass-off, and rips were being taken more regularly.

Smaller tags were provided at the start of the season, but they gradually begin to fall off when the kids were running, so we reverted back to the larger tags. The regular playing time and location at the same park seems to make it easy and carefree for the parents. Although game cancellations were somewhat difficult to get early conformation.

Overall a really great season with the kids having fun, and playing some good Rippa rugby.

43. WĀNANGA TOA TROPHY

WĀNANGA TOA TROPHY New Zealand Universities Trophy.

The Wānanga Toa trophy was presented for the game played between New Zealand Universities and Poverty Bay in Gisborne, May 2nd 2016. It recounts the journey of Tanenui a rangi, the great son of the sky father.

Tāne traversed the skies above in search of the sacred baskets of knowledge. It was not an easy quest. The children of the wind god, Tawhirimātea and Whiro, the evil one challenged him. Nonetheless, Tāne remained true to his mission and defeated his opponents to secure the baskets. After returning to the Earth Mother, Papatūānuku, he established the first house of learning for humankind. Today’s New Zealand Universities players carry on this legacy of questing for knowledge and overcoming opponents.

TE WHAO - The Chisel

For Maori the art of woodcarving is considered highly sacred. In sourcing wood for carving the taking of Tanes children from the great forests was handled with pronounced care. The chisel and the adze were revered as they allowed Maori to become known throughout the world of indigenous peoples as being at the forefront of artistic excellence.
