It is a pleasure to host you in Istanbul and Ankara for what promises to be an unforgettable 10 days of basketball. The 16 best teams in the world are here with us, and I have no doubt that they will inspire basketball lovers in Turkey and around the world. For the Turkish Basketball Federation (TBF), which is currently celebrating the 55th anniversary of its founding, this is a poignant opportunity to reflect on the history of our game and our vision for the future. With this world championship Turkey has become the first country to host FIBA World and continental championships in both men’s and women’s basketball in the last 15 years. This year, for the first time ever, our men’s and women’s national teams will have competed in FIBA’s flagship tournaments. Earlier this summer our U18 and U20 Men’s National Teams were crowned European Champions. At TBF our goal is increasing the impact of basketball, and that means making a difference in the community. This year we inaugurated our new social responsibility project, PASS IT ON, the centrepiece of which was Camp PASS IT ON. From August 11–18 we welcomed more than 200 kids and 100 coaches from 87 different countries to Istanbul for one week of basketball learning and cultural exchange. This was just the first of many new initiatives that reflect TBF’s commitment to changing lives through basketball. The 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women represents another important opportunity to make a difference. Boys and girls around the world will be watching these remarkable athletes, and I can think of no better setting for the excitement to come than Turkey.
