ARCTIC WINTER GAMES (AWG) TEAM Dog Selection Criteria and Procedures

1. General information

• AWG 2020 will be held March 15th-21st, 2020 in Whitehorse, . Age Eligibility: Arctic Winter Games Team Alaska (AWGTA) Dog Mushing athletes must have been born (Coed Juvenile between Born between April 1, 2005 and March 31, 2009, Coed Junior between Born between April 1, 2000 and March 31, 2005.

• This competition will be conducted under the Alaska Dog and Racing Association (ASDRA) and/or Junior ASDRA rules as modified by the Arctic Winter Games International Committee.

• Athletes must comply with athlete eligibility policies as defined by the Athlete Eligibility Policy in the AWG International Staging Manual.

• Arctic Winter Games Team Alaska (AWGTA) Dog Mushing Team Size will be 4: one athlete in the coed Junior male and one athlete in the coed Juvenile Female, two athletes and two coaches. • Dog Mushing is co-ed. • Each athlete must bring along one coach. • Each athlete must provide his/her own dog team • The teams will be selected by an application process. • Technical Package is regulations developed by the AWG International Committee on each sport. The detailed specifications may include age categories, events, competition formats, equipment requirements, etc. See: www.awg.ca

2. How to tryout/apply* • Applications must be postmarked by January 3, 2020 and can be emailed to [email protected] • Applications must follow the official Arctic Winter Games Team Alaska Dog Mushing team application form, available at www. teamalaska.org. • There is no cost to apply however, if selected for Team Alaska, you will have a participant fee.

3. Selection Standards / Basis for Selection* Arctic Winter Games – Team Alaska will select the team based upon: • Application Form • Mushing Experience • References

4. Final Selection* • Top applicants in each of two age classes will be selected. • Arctic Winter Games – Team Alaska will select the athletes in collaboration with a selection committee and confirmation by the Chef de Mission. • Mushers will be notified of their selection not later than January 10, 2020

• Those selected for the team must commit to attend the Games not later than January 13, 2020 Failure to commit to attend by this deadline will result in the athlete being replaced on the team.

5. Alternates* • If an athlete who initially accepts a position on the team withdraws from the team, a replacement will be selected from among the original applicants. • If for any reason there are no available applicants the selection committee will fill the position.

6. Coaches • Each athlete will choose a coach. • Coaches must complete and submit an AWGTA Coach Application form by January 15th • Coaches are required to submit to and successfully pass a criminal background check.

7. Transportation/Travel • Athletes and coaches are responsible for the logistics of transporting their dogs by truck from their location in Alaska to the site of the Games. • The Arctic Winter Games Team Alaska will not reimburse fuel expenses but will deduct $200.00 from the participant fee for fuel credit.
