Until The Stress of Her Regard squall struck, Lake Leman was so still that the two men talking in the The Stress of Her Regard of the open sailboat could safely set their wine glasses on the thwarts. The man in the crook of the bow was staring ahead toward the east shore of the lake. Though he was only twenty-eight, his curly dark red hair was already shot with gray, and the pale skin around his eyes and mouth was scored with creases of ironic humor. Imagine climbing up to peer out of some barred window at all this. His friend pushed the fingers of one skinny hand through his thatch of fineblond hair and peered ahead. Mostly out in the lake? Lord Byron stared at Percy Shelley, once again not sure what the young man meant. Both of them were voluntarily in exile from England. Shelley was far less famous, though his offenses against propriety sometimes appalled even Byron. Only twenty-four, he had already been expelled from Oxford for having written a pamphlet advocating atheism, had been disowned by his wealthy father, and had deserted his wife and two children in order to run away with the daughter of the radical London philosopher William Godwin. Godwin had not been pleased to see his daughter putting into all-too-real action his abstract arguments in favor of free love. Four nights ago Shelley and the two girls he was travelling with had visited Byron, and rainy weather had kept the party indoors. What with the storm clamoring beyond the window glass and the candles fluttering in the erratic drafts, the conversation had turned to ghosts and the supernatural—luckily, for it developed that Claire was easily frightened by such topics, and Byron was able to keep her The Stress of Her Regard with alarm, and silent except for an occasional horrified gasp. It seemed that at about the same time that the Shelleys had arrived in Scotland, a young farm maid named Mary Jones had been found hacked to death with what the authorities guessed must have been sheep shears. Byron shot Shelley a look of gratitude, for he assumed that Shelley too was frightening Claire in order to keep her off the subject of her pregnancy; but the young man was at the moment entirely unaware of him. Byron realized that Shelley simply enjoyed scaring people. Post a The Stress of Her Regard. Tim Powers is for me a writer whose development is more obvious than a lot of others. One can see a wonderful imagination on the page, but not the talent to execute on a line by line basis. I daresay The Stress of Her Regard is the transition point from those novels to where we see Powers today, as and the novels which follow feature the author in his best form. Thankfully, unique imagination has remained a constant throughout. Accidentally leaving his ring on a statue, he returns the next day to find the object now clenched in a stone fist, unable to be loosened. A whole world of dark horrors slowly unveiling itself in the aftermath, Crawford escapes Britain, but does so into the arms of a creature which would rather have him dead. Trouble is, they too are haunted in their own way. There are many books and stories these days featuring people of old, real and fictional, in varying fantastical scenes. While not The Stress of Her Regard first, The Stress of Her Regard must certainly be considered one of the forerunners of this type of fiction, and as a result contains The Stress of Her Regard sincerity and integrity that a lot of the later, more imitative works do not possess. As mentioned, with The Stress of Her Regard Powers had finally honed in on a writing style capable of deeper scrutiny. There are innumerable anachronisms in terms of authorial voice superimposed on European culture of the 19th century, but the focus, as tucked into the scene and setting as it is, remains with horror elements. Patient and subtle, the story is built like bricks, one quality scene at a time. That being said, there The Stress of Her Regard be times that Powers is too patient. The content perhaps is not key nor adds significant value, and as a result the story sometimes does not escalate The Stress of Her Regard beyond the scene level. The Anubis Gatesfor example, does a better job generating momentum. The scenes are wonderfully unveiled and an intangible motif of Gothic horror delightfully pervades the story. But something still lacks between the scenes—an underlying motivation for plot that lurks. The twist on vampires is well-done so as not to be just another vampire story—to be more than a one-note story, and for that comes recommended to people who enjoy dark fantasy and horror.
