  • Abel Tasman Wins the 143Rd Longines Kentucky Oaks in Front of Rain-Soaked Crowd
May 5, 2017 Abel Tasman Wins the 143rd Longines Kentucky Oaks in Front of Rain-Soaked Crowd 105,100 Brave Coldest Oaks Day Since 1940 Just Shy of Setting the All-Time All-Sources Wagering Record LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 05, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Fans braved an all-day rain and the coldest Oaks Day since 1940 as Abel Tasman captured the 143rd running of the $1 million Longines Kentucky Oaks (Grade I) at Churchill Downs Racetrack. The dreary weather, which kept thousands of fans at home, still resulted in attendance of 105,100. The highest all-time attendance record for the Kentucky Oaks of 124,589 was set just last year under perfect weather. Wagering from all-sources on the full Kentucky Oaks Day race card of $48.9 million was down only slightly to 2016's record- setting total of $49.0 million and represents the second highest all-sources wagering on Oaks Day. All-sources wagering on the Kentucky Oaks race of $14.9 million was also down slightly compared to 2016's $15.0 million. On-track wagering on the Kentucky Oaks Day race card of $9.3 million was down 22% compared to 2016. On-track wagering on the Kentucky Oaks race of $2.4 million was down 21% compared to 2016's $3.0 million. TRACK PRESIDENT COMMENTARY "Congratulations to the connections of Abel Tasman and special thanks to all of our amazing guests who braved record cold and rainy conditions," said Kevin Flanery, President of Churchill Downs Racetrack. "Today's near-record handle numbers, despite the dismal weather conditions, shows that the Kentucky Oaks continues to grow and has established itself as one of the world's most popular events.

  • Looking to Bolster Regional Racing, Stronach to Close
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2017 LOOKING TO BOLSTER WHAT THE TAX CHANGE MEANS TO A HORSEPLAYER by Joe Bianca REGIONAL RACING, Last week, the NTRA announced that a decade-long effort to modernize tax regulations for horseplayers was set to become STRONACH TO CLOSE FARM law. Its CEO Alex Waldrop recounted Tuesday in the TDN the lobbying efforts, stalled bills and fighting through bureaucracy that brought the industry to this unmitigated victory. The crucial turning point occurred after the NTRA, acting on suggestions from prominent horseplayers like Steve Crist and Andy Beyer, as well as its key lobbyist on the Hill, decided to stop trying to go through the morass of Congress and instead petition the Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service directly to make the change. That proved to be what pushed the effort across the finish line, thanks in large part to two comment periods, one in early 2015 and one at the end of 2016, where thousands of horseplayers wrote in and explained why the current tax law was unfair, ridiculously out of date and a drain on them as well as the industry at large. • Ron Mcanally, John Henry’S Hall of Fame Trainer and Poster Boy for the Geriatric Set
CALIFORNIA THOROUGHBRED TRAINERS WORDS: Steve Schuelein PhOtOS: BenOit PhOtOS IKE fine wine…” flowed the “ words from emcee Ted Bassett at the annual Eclipse Awards Dinner to announce that John Henry had been named 1984 Horse of the Year at the advanced age of nine. LThe same words today could describe octogenarian Ron McAnally, John Henry’s Hall of Fame trainer and poster boy for the geriatric set. McAnally, who celebrated his 82nd birthday on July 11, ages gracefully while continuing to pump out Grade 1 stakes winners. Seated at a Clocker’s Corner table one morning in June near the end of the extended Santa Anita Park meet and looking forward to Del Mar, McAnally made only a few minor concessions to Father Time while continuing his lifelong love affair with his job. “As long as I’m alive, that’s all I know how to do,” said the soft-spoken trainer of the regimen that keeps him young: showing up at the track early every morning seven days a week. “I don’t play golf, tennis, or cards.” McAnally admitted that he does not move as smoothly as he did when he was 41, largely the John Henry’s trainer and Hall of Famer Ron McAnally has just turned 82 years old result of partial knee replacement surgery in 2012, but the anticipation of his next stakes win keeps a bounce in his step and a glint in his eye. “Dan Landers, my assistant since 1995, has Ron McAnally: been my right arm, especially since the knee surgery,” said McAnally, who conditions 15 horses at Santa Anita and another four at Pomona with Jose Miranda, an employee for 42 years.
