I WWW.FTBOA.COM • WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 28, 2015 • 3 www.facebook.com/thefloridahorse OBS Star Of the Day From Claiming to Classic, Sr. Quisqueyano upsets By Brock Sheridan HALLANDALE BEACH – Sr. Quisqueyano made it three out of five for the Florida-breds on Florida Sunshine Millions Day at Gulfstream Park Jan. 17 and he did it in fashion by winning the $250,000 Sunshine Millions Classic at odds of 20-1. The Classic was one of five stakes on the day for horses bred in Florida, New York, Pennsylvania and Maryland with Florida- breds winning three; New York-bred Weekend Hideaway won the $100,000 Florida Sunshine Millions Sprint and Pennsylvania-bred Dame Dorothy won the Filly & Mare Turf. Trained by Peter Walder for Ron Paoluchi’s Looch Racing Stables of Dallas, Sr. Quisqueyano was making his first start for the duo after being claimed for $62,000 from a Dec. 21 optional claiming race at Gulfstream Park. “I hate looking at the board and being 20-1,” Walder said after the race. “So it’s kind of satisfying when you put one over like that. But I have to give all the credit to the owner. It was his decision to claim the horse and he put up all the money.” Sr. Quiqueyano drew post 1 for the mile and one-eighth Classic for older horses and broke just a bit slow. That allowed jockey Edgar Zayas to settle the 5-year-old horse midpack as 60-1 shot I’m Step- pin It Up and 8-5 second choice Wildcat Red went quickly to the lead in tandem and took the six-horse field around the far turn. Wildcat Red led after a quick quarter-mile in :22.77 with I’m Steppin It Up an- other length back in second with Sr. Quisqueyano third. I’m Steppin’ ????????????????? It Up challenged Wildcat Red for the lead midway down the back- stretch as Sr. Quisqueyano also inched closer as they went a half- mile in :46.17. Going into the second turn, Zayas went to the lead with Sr. Quisqueyano as East Hall, at 7-2, began to move while rac- ing three-wide. Sr. Quisqueyano held the lead into the stretch with East Hall just to his outside and Catholic Cowboy also with a chance as Wildcat Red and I’m Steppin It Up began to fade. Sr. Quisqueyano drifted out a bit midway for home, but East Hall and Catholic Cowboy could not make up any ground as they ran toward the finish. At the wire, Sr. Quisqueyano was half-length in front of East Hall in second with Catholic Cowboy another length and-a-quarter further back in third. The final time was 1:50.09 on the fast track. “[Owner] Ron [Paoluchi] and I discussed it this morning and we See Sr. Quisqueyano on page 4 WWW.FTBOA.COM • WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 28, 2015 • 4 www.facebook.com/thefloridahorse Sr. Quisqueyano from page 3 knew that [jockey Jose] Caraballo was going to go to the lead [aboard I’m Steppin’ It Up] and [Wildcat Red] was going to go with him,” Walder said. “And [jockey] Edgar [Zayas] was very confident he could stalk. And you know that Sr. Quisqueyano is older now and a little bit wiser and today proved he doesn’t have to have the lead.” Sr. Quisqueyano was bred in Florida by Do- Little Farm LLC. He is by the Journeyman Stud stallion Exclusive Quality and out of Royal Navy, by Polish Navy. He earned $153,450 in the Clas- sic, pushing his career earnings to $713,560. It was his eighth win from 29 starts. Sr. Quisqueyano graduated from the OBS Winter Mixed Sale of 2011 when he was sold for $5,500 as a yearling from the consignment of Sr. Quisqueyano Thoroughstock, Agent.
