Bryant (9-21, 7-11 NEC) • Bryant ended its second NEC season tied for the third-best total win turnaround in the nation in 2010-11, upping the program's wins by eight (one to nine). • Freshman forward Alex Francis (Harlem, NY/Holderness Prep (NH)) was named Choice Hotels NEC Rookie of the Week for the sixth time this season on Monday. He averaged 34.0 ppg and 9.5 rpg in two games, including a career-high 43 points in a loss to Long Island on Thursday. The 43 points established an NEC freshman record and was the highest total by an NEC player in nine years. It was also the most points by a freshman in the nation this season. • Senior swingman Cecil Gresham (Bloomfield, CT/Maine Central Institute) became the 11th member of Bryant’s 1,000-point, 500-rebound club, finishing his career with 1,386 career points (13th all-time) and 510 rebounds. Central Connecticut State (18-11, 11-7 NEC) • CCSU dropped its last three games of the regular season, but still managed to snag the #4 seed and a home quarterfinal round game against St. Francis (NY) on Thursday. • The Blue Devils have qualified for 13 consecutive NEC Tournaments, the longest current streak in the conference. • Junior forward Ken Horton (Ossining, NY/Ossining) has been on quite a tear as of late. Over the last eight games, he has averaged 23.0 points and 10.6 rebounds. Horton leads the league in scoring (20.0 ppg), double-doubles (12) and blocks (1.6 bpg), and ranks third in rebounding (9.0 rpg) and FT percentage (.866), eight in steals (1.5 spg) and ninth in field goal percentage (.495). • Horton (1,410 points) and senior guard Shemik Thompson (Milton, DE/Cape Henlopen) (1,300) have eclipsed 1,000 points for their careers. Junior guard Robby Ptacek (Bayport, NY/Blue Point) is just about there as well with 997 points. Fairleigh Dickinson (5-24, 3-15 NEC) • FDU snapped an 11-game losing streak and 14-game conference losing skid with an 85-74 win at Sacred Heart last Thursday. • After qualifying for 25 of the first 26 NEC Tournaments, the Knights have missed out on the postseason in three of the last four years. • Senior guard Terence Grier (Cranford, NJ/Cranford (URI)) ended his career on a high-note, averaging 23.5 ppg last week. He tallied a career-high 34 points in the win over the Pioneers. Long Island (24-5, 16-2 NEC) • LIU won its first NEC regular season championship since 1997-98, set a school record for league wins (16) and posted its highest victory total (24) since winning 25 games under in 1941-42. • LIU ranks seventh nationally in scoring (82.7 ppg), third in rebounds (42.0) and leads the nation in free throw attempts (30.4/game). The Blackbirds are 21-1 when scoring 80+ points this season. • The Blackbirds will be hosting a postseason game for the third straight season. LIU is 11-2 at home in 2010-11 and 23-4 at the WRAC against NEC opponents dating back to the 2008-09 season. In postseason play, LIU has posted a 12-7 mark at home. • LIU is ranked 18th in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major poll and its 10-game win streak is the third longest in the country at this time. • Sophomore forward Julian Boyd (San Antonio, TX/William H. Taft) is the current Choice Hotels NEC Player of the Week. He leads a balanced scoring attack with 13.1 ppg and is the NEC’s second-leading rebounder at 9.0 per game. He also ranks second in double-doubles (12) and field goal percentage (.532). Monmouth (9-21, 5-13 NEC) • Monmouth failed to qualify for the NEC playoffs for just the fourth time in its history. • Head coach resigned his position on Sunday after 14 years as head coach. The Hawks won NEC championships in 2001, 2004 and 2006 during his tenure. • Junior forward Mike Myers-Keitt (Waterbury, CT/Fairfield Prep (Marianapolis Catholic (CT))) was one of the league’s most improved players this season. He raised his scoring average from 3.8 ppg in 2009-10 to a team-high 10.1 ppg this season. • Senior guard James Hett (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) closed out his career with 492 assists, which ranks 18th on the NEC’s career chart. Mount St. Mary’s (11-20, 9-9 NEC) • The Mount snapped a four-game losing streak with a 64-55 win at Saint Francis (PA) on Saturday in its regular season finale. The victory locked up the #7 seed for the Mountaineers and a meeting with Quinnipiac in the quarterfinals. The Mount dropped a 77-75 decision on a shot at the buzzer in Hamden back on December 4, then beat the Bobcats back at home, 72-63, on January 22. • The Mountaineers have reached at least at least the NEC semifinals each of the last four years, and won the program's third NEC title in 2008. • Mount St. Mary’s led the NEC in scoring defense in league play, allowing just 63.1 ppg. • Junior guard Lamar Trice (Philadelphia, PA/Imhotep Charter) has improved his scoring average a league-best 11.6 ppg. He averaged 1.9 ppg a year ago, and now leads the Mount with 13.5 ppg. Quinnipiac (21-8, 13-5 NEC) • Quinnipiac has qualified for the NEC Tournament in each of the past six years and reached at least the semifinals in three of the last four seasons. A year ago, the Bobcats reached the NEC title game and competed in the Postseason NIT. • The Bobcats are riding a six-game win streak heading into the playoffs where they will face #7 Mount St. Mary’s on Thursday. • Quinnipiac is 28-8 in NEC play over the last two seasons. • Senior forward Justin Rutty (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) comes off a big week that saw him post a pair of double-doubles and average 15.5 ppg and 13.5 rpg. He has compiled 999 career rebounds and is 24 shy of overtaking NEC career leader Ron Robinson, who played CCSU from 2000-04. Robert Morris (16-13, 12-6 NEC) • The two-time defending NEC champions Colonials will attempt to become the first program to win three straight tournament titles. Robert Morris has collected a league-best seven NEC crowns. • Robert Morris has won six straight NEC postseason games and is 10-2 at home this season where it will host #6 Wagner for the second time in less than a week in Thursday’s quarterfinals. • The Colonials have won 106 games over the last five seasons, a school and NEC record. • In place of injured leading scorer Karon Abraham (Paterson, NJ/Harp Academy), redshirt freshman guard Coron Williams (Midlothian, VA/Christchurch) paced RMU with a career-high 26 points in a 66-49 win over Wagner on Saturday. Sacred Heart (11-18, 6-12 NEC) • The Pioneers failed to reach the postseason for the second consecutive year, finishing one game behind Saint Francis (PA), which snagged the final tourney berth. • After sitting out last season, sophomore guard Shane Gibson (Killingly, CT/Killingly) developed into one of the NEC’s most lethal scorers. He ranks second in the league with 17.2 ppg, and was even better against conference competition, averaging 18.5 ppg. His 75 three-pointers ranks second on the circuit. • Head coach Dave Bike won his 500th career game earlier in the year and finished out his 33rd season with 506 victories. St. Francis (NY) (15-14, 10-8 NEC) • St. Francis (NY) has won four straight heading into its NEC quarterfinal game at CCSU on Thursday. The program’s #5 seed is its highest since 2003-04. • By winning seven of their last ten conference games, the Terriers finished over .500 in NEC play (10-8) for the first time since 2003-04. • Senior guard Ricky Cadell (New York, NY/The Patterson School) set the school’s new career scoring mark on Saturday and now has 1,624 points. He passed Darrwin Purdie, who posted 1,613 points from 1985-89. He averaged 23.0 points and 6.0 rebounds in two wins last week, and is sixth in the NEC in scoring at 16.1 ppg. • The Terriers lead the league and are 22nd in the country in turnover margin (+3.24). St. Francis also paces the circuit in steals (7.8 per game) with senior guard Akeem Bennett ranking first in the NEC and eighth nationally with 2.7 spg. Saint Francis (PA) (9-20, 7-11 NEC) • Saint Francis (PA) returns to the playoffs for the second straight year. The Red Flash hope to win their first tourney game since 1995. • The Red Flash holds the distinction of being one of just two NEC teams to knock off quarterfinal opponent Long Island this season with an 86-71 win in Loretto on January 22. • The Red Flash will have to buck history to advance, as a #8 seed has yet to oust a top seed in the tournament. • Sophomore guard Umar Shannon (Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) has had an outstanding season for the Red Flash, coming through in the clutch for the Red Flash on numerous occasions. He ranks fifth in the NEC in scoring at 16.2 ppg, a figure he bettered in league play with 18.5 ppg. Against conference opposition, he drained 50 three-pointers to lead all NEC players. Wagner (13-16, 9-9 NEC) • The Seahawks are back in the NEC playoffs following a one-year absence and will travel to #3 Robert Morris in the quarterfinals on Thursday. The Colonials defeated visiting Wagner, 66-49, on Saturday. • Despite being picked to finish 11th in the NEC preseason coaches poll, Wagner increased its victory total from five to 13. The eight game turnaround is tied for third-best in the nation. • Freshman guard Latif Rivers (Elizabeth, NJ/Avon Old Farms (CT)) is a six-time Choice Hotels NEC Rookie of the Week who averages 14.2 ppg and is second in the conference in FT shooting (.882). • Junior guard Tyler Murray (Toronto, Ontario/Eastern Commerce) developed into one of the NEC’s premier scorers. He is third on the loop with 16.9 ppg and has hit 40.4 percent of his three- point attempts to rank fifth in the league. NEC Men’s Basketball 2011 NEC Basketball Tournament Facts/Figures Schedule
