10 PENSIONERS’ CLUBS PENSIONERS’ CLUBS 11 Women in Barclays increased to £275, which equates to 30%, even though both would have been employed for the same job role. By 1979, Barclays was employing 38,000 women in the UK, and more importantly, 266 were managers and nine were branch managers. In 1983, Mary Baker became the first female director, and significantly, at this time, 65% of colleagues were female. It followed that, in 1984, Tina Boyden was appointed as the first equal opportunities manager – this was at a time when Barclays was largely female in staff numbers but predominantly male in management. The small projection of women to high-level decision-making roles led to Barclays introducing the Career Break Scheme in 1986, which, significantly, was the year that saw women hold proportionately more senior positions at Barclays than at the other four big UK banks.
