He is a PITCHING switch-hitter who had an off year at the plate last season, but After two seasons of steady improvement, pitching bounced back in the fall season by hitting .321. should be a strong suit in 1990. The Panther mound corps Junior Mike Kelly raised some eyebrows last fal l with an knocked about three runs off its team ERA last year and this outstanding showing at the plate and treme ndo us season, with each member of the starting rotation being at improvement in the field. Kaul was probably the most consistent of the starters he was a part-time starter last season. He will rep lace the last season and Duthie showed flashes of brilliance against graduated Brian Scheidegger, who held down the positio n in some of the top opponents. Hanken has been as good as outstanding fashion the past two years. 2 game. He will need some time to adjust to college pitching, but looks to have the potential to be an outstanding college catcher.

OUTFIELD If one position on the team stands out, it will be the outfield with three returning starters. All positions should be strong offensively and solid on defense. Two-time All-AMCU rightfielder Mark Lumpa (.333, 6 HR, 28 RBis) returns to provide the biggest power threat for the Panthers. He has good power to all fields and runs well. Junior John Pratt (.261, 3 HR, 20 RBis, 16 SB) a legitimate professional prospect, will anchor from center field. He can hit for average, has good power, can run and throw well, and, perhaps most importantly, is constantly improving. Senior Geff Gescheidler (.277, 2 HR, 20 RBis) will be the leftfielder. He is very sound fundamentally and makes all the plays in the field. Three others who can add depth at any of the three positions are sophomore P.J. Conlon, senior Jim Welsh and sophomore Mark Chambers. All three are dependable and could see more playing time if Lumpa is moved to first base.

37 Donnie Allen (1989) Cedar Falls, IA Most memorable moment - ''Allowing only one earned run over six innings at Minnesota. It was my best game ever and the last start of my career. " What I liked about playing baseball at UNI - ''/liked going to the big schools on road trips ... playing against the best teams in NCM Division I in front of their big crowds. "

Rod Hulme (1989) Waterloo, IA Most memorable moment- ''At Arkan sas in 1988, I came into relieve Steve Bair. Arkansas was ranked seventh at the time and I shut them out on two hits over the final 42h innings. " What I liked about playing baseball at UNI - "The fact that we were a bunch ofguys playing ball just because we loved to play. Everybody gave 100 percent, but we never forgot how fun it was just to play the game. "

Brian Scheidegger (1989) Chadwick, IL Most memorable moment - "During a rain-delayed game against the 1 Oth ranked Arkansas Razorbacks, I went 4-for-4 at the plate. It was the first and last four-hit game of my career. " What I liked about playing baseball at UNI - "The opportunity to compete against the elite college baseball programs in the nation. Being competitive at this level was a rewarding experience for me. "

Dan Wirtz (1989) Sarasota, FL Most memorable moment - "The first weekend of conference play my senior year at Western Illinois. I had seven hits for the series including a game-winning RBI single in the first game on Sun day." What I liked about playing baseball at UNI - "Playing ball at UNI gave me the opportunity to play against the top univer sities in some of the nicest ballparks in the country. "
