24 underlying principle: design excellence
We often hear how Toronto is a city of neighbourhoods, and each has its own character and vibrant cultural spirit. When you say, Ossington, Queen West or Leslieville, different cultural experiences come to mind. But what about when you say Malvern or Albion? In these and other neighbourhoods that have traditionally had much less investment in their cultural spaces and public infrastructure, the library is providing cultural experiences, not only in terms of the experiences we are putting into those branches, but also, and this is important, in the aesthetic contribution that the physical buildings themselves make to their communities, and the important public spaces they represent, a space that says that this community deserves beauty and culture as much as any other community in this city.
