We’re so pleased to have you with us for CWA 2016! Behind the scenes, a great deal of work has been done by many hands over the last year to construct a comprehensive CWA strategic plan, a new CWA governance structure, and our first-ever Board. Allow me to highlight just a few features of these achievements. • The 2015 CWA strategic plan calls for a conference that enhances its ability to educate, engage, and inspire; a conference that is of ever-higher quality and visibility; a more diverse conference; and a conference that is financially sustainable so that it will remain free of charge for future generations. • Our new governance structure cements another central feature of the strategic plan – that the conference remain a collaborative partnership between the University and the broader community. This is reflected in a partition of responsibility whereby the Program Committee of community and student volunteers is responsible for recruiting our speakers and designing the content, and our CU staff is responsible for conference logistics, marketing, and fundraising. • Our Board consists of 4 elected community members, 4 University representatives, and a CU student, and is responsible for setting the policies of the CWA. As for conference improvements that are more readily observable, our Board has approved a number of features for 2016 based on suggestions from CWA friends and supporters. • A free, downloadable CWA “App” has been created to allow you to build your own schedule, find venues, rate panels, eceiver updates, and more. I encourage you to give it a try. • CWA @ Night features panels, films, and more after 5:00 p.m. to make the CWA more accessible to working professionals and students busy with classes during the work day. • CWA 2016 is complemented by a wealth of concurrent events to enhance the conference experience like never before, from a celebration of CU’s Arts programs to a birthday party for Shakespeare to salsa lessons, to a conceptual micro-conference put on by CU students. We hope you’ll give us your feedback on these enhancements, and all aspects of the conference. The best way to do that is to sign up for our updates and communications by visiting www.colorado.edu/cwa or by sending an email to [email protected], or by downloading the CWA app! Thank you for being part of CWA 2016. We’re certain you’ll be the richer for it. John Griffin, Faculty Director 04 cwa.colorado.edu Welcome to the Sixty-eighth Annual Conference on World Affairs presented by the University of Colorado and the community of Boulder. Under our new organizational structure, I was voted the Community Chair of the conference last spring by the Programming Committee which consists of community volunteers and CU students. I have been a volunteer for the conference for the last 18 years, working, most recently as the community co-chair for Politics & Media as well as the Housing Committee. The wonderful speakers I have met and the intellectual stimulation every year is important, but the opportunity to work with the students and watch them grow in confidence and maturity each year is why I continue to work with the conference. This year has been an exciting and inspiring time for all of us who volunteered our time and talents to bring the conference to the community and the University. We are committed to the ideals that have been the foundation of this organization for the past 68 years but we also want to remain open and responsive to program, community and student-focused enhancements. This conference will continue the tradition of bringing interesting and challenging speakers from all over the world. This week is packed with an exciting keynote, stimulating plenaries, exciting performances, thought-provoking panels, and the chance for you to listen, question and meet amazing people from all over the world. I’d like to thank our committee of volunteers who worked tirelessly to build this conference. Most of them joined the committee because they love the conference and they believe in it, but many knew nothing of the efforts required to attract and organize 100 participants into 220 panels and presentations. Everyone learned quickly and brought enthusiasm, fantastic ideas, connections, and a willingness to work until the program was good (and we believe it is better than good). I’d like to thank each of your for attending our conference and bringing your inquisitiveness, your interest and your enthusiasm to our gathering. Thank you for allowing us to share our passion and our conference with you. • Celebrities As Political Representatives: Explaining the Exchangeability of Celebrity Capital in the Political Field
Celebrities as Political Representatives: Explaining the Exchangeability of Celebrity Capital in the Political Field Ellen Watts Royal Holloway, University of London Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Politics 2018 Declaration I, Ellen Watts, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Ellen Watts September 17, 2018. 2 Abstract The ability of celebrities to become influential political actors is evident (Marsh et al., 2010; Street 2004; 2012, West and Orman, 2003; Wheeler, 2013); the process enabling this is not. While Driessens’ (2013) concept of celebrity capital provides a starting point, it remains unclear how celebrity capital is exchanged for political capital. Returning to Street’s (2004) argument that celebrities claim to speak for others provides an opportunity to address this. In this thesis I argue successful exchange is contingent on acceptance of such claims, and contribute an original model for understanding this process. I explore the implicit interconnections between Saward’s (2010) theory of representative claims, and Bourdieu’s (1991) work on political capital and the political field. On this basis, I argue celebrity capital has greater explanatory power in political contexts when fused with Saward’s theory of representative claims. Three qualitative case studies provide demonstrations of this process at work. Contributing to work on how celebrities are evaluated within political and cultural hierarchies (Inthorn and Street, 2011; Marshall, 2014; Mendick et al., 2018; Ribke, 2015; Skeggs and Wood, 2011), I ask which key factors influence this process.

Women's Experimental Autobiography from Counterculture Comics to Transmedia Storytelling: Staging Encounters Across Time, Space, and Medium Dissertation Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Ohio State University Alexandra Mary Jenkins, M.A. Graduate Program in English The Ohio State University 2014 Dissertation Committee: Jared Gardner, Advisor Sean O’Sullivan Robyn Warhol Copyright by Alexandra Mary Jenkins 2014 Abstract Feminist activism in the United States and Europe during the 1960s and 1970s harnessed radical social thought and used innovative expressive forms in order to disrupt the “grand perspective” espoused by men in every field (Adorno 206). Feminist student activists often put their own female bodies on display to disrupt the disembodied “objective” thinking that still seemed to dominate the academy. The philosopher Theodor Adorno responded to one such action, the “bared breasts incident,” carried out by his radical students in Germany in 1969, in an essay, “Marginalia to Theory and Praxis.” In that essay, he defends himself against the students’ claim that he proved his lack of relevance to contemporary students when he failed to respond to the spectacle of their liberated bodies. He acknowledged that the protest movements seemed to offer thoughtful people a way “out of their self-isolation,” but ultimately, to replace philosophy with bodily spectacle would mean to miss the “infinitely progressive aspect of the separation of theory and praxis” (259, 266). Lisa Yun Lee argues that this separation continues to animate contemporary feminist debates, and that it is worth returning to Adorno’s reasoning, if we wish to understand women’s particular modes of theoretical ii insight in conversation with “grand perspectives” on cultural theory in the twenty-first century.

At the state and national level, the Kochs use their unlimited resources to influence policy to suit their political and personal needs while hurting middle class and working families. The policies they favor include cutting taxes for corporations and the wealthy; reducing and eliminating regulations to protect workers, consumers, and the environment; privatizing and cutting both Social Security and Medicare; and cutting other programs, including Pell Grants for college. For decades, the Kochs and their network of dark money political front groups have been pushing the Koch agenda in New Hampshire — perhaps more than any other state in the country — which has benefitted billionaires like the Kochs at the expense of Granite Staters. In 2016, New Hampshire will continue to be on center stage in American politics with the First In The Nation primary, a top- tier Senate race, marquee Congressional contests, an open governor’s mansion, and a number of hot button issues in the limelight. At the same time, the Koch network has promised to spend nearly $900 million to buy elections for candidates who will do their bidding for them. The Kochs themselves admit they “expect something in return” for the millions they spend propping up their candidates, but for candidates, backing from the Kochs comes with a high price tag.

  • The Evolution of the Digital Political Advertising Network
PLATFORMS AND OUTSIDERS IN PARTY NETWORKS: THE EVOLUTION OF THE DIGITAL POLITICAL ADVERTISING NETWORK Bridget Barrett A thesis submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts at the Hussman School of Journalism and Media. Chapel Hill 2020 Approved by: Daniel Kreiss Adam Saffer Adam Sheingate © 2020 Bridget Barrett ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Bridget Barrett: Platforms and Outsiders in Party Networks: The Evolution of the Digital Political Advertising Network (Under the direction of Daniel Kreiss) Scholars seldom examine the companies that campaigns hire to run digital advertising. This thesis presents the first network analysis of relationships between federal political committees (n = 2,077) and the companies they hired for electoral digital political advertising services (n = 1,034) across 13 years (2003–2016) and three election cycles (2008, 2012, and 2016). The network expanded from 333 nodes in 2008 to 2,202 nodes in 2016. In 2012 and 2016, Facebook and Google had the highest normalized betweenness centrality (.34 and .27 in 2012 and .55 and .24 in 2016 respectively). Given their positions in the network, Facebook and Google should be considered consequential members of party networks. Of advertising agencies hired in the 2016 electoral cycle, 23% had no declared political specialization and were hired disproportionately by non-incumbents. The thesis argues their motivations may not be as well-aligned with party goals as those of established political professionals. iii TABLE OF CONTENTS LIST OF TABLES AND FIGURES ....................................................................................................................
