5 HONORS DAY 2016 DAY HONORS

In what has become something of a tradition at Gustavus, the previous year’s faculty winner of the Edgar M. Carlson Award for Distinguished Teaching addresses the audience of high-achieving students and their parents and friends gathered for Honors Day. The 2016 Honors Day Convocation speaker is Associate Professor of History, Environmental Studies, and Japanese Studies David Obermiller, PhD, who last spring was named the 2015 recipient of the Carlson Award, the Gustavus faculty’s highest accolade for teaching excellence. One Gustavus student said “After taking his class, my world view has expanded tremendously and I feel like I’ve grown as a reader, writer, student, and most importantly, grown as a person.”

Obermiller joined the Gustavus faculty in 2008. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa, and his master’s and doctorate from the University of Iowa. At Gustavus, Obermiller teaches courses such as Introduction to Modern East Asia, Introduction to Modern Japan, Introduction to China, and Environmental History. Hymn (Please stand as you are able.)
