Eva von Bahr ”there is order here, very faint, very human”.

  • Sir Hans Kornberg, FRS
Sir Hans Kornberg, FRS Hans Kornberg was born in Germany in 1928 to Jewish parents. Following the advent of Hitler, the life of the family became increasingly dangerous and in 1939 Hans was sent to live with an uncle in England. Hans was educated at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Wakefield and left at 17 to work as a laboratory assistant at the University of Sheffield under the supervision of Hans Krebs. The latter encouraged him to study further, which led to a degree in Chemistry and a PhD in Biochemistry at Sheffield where Hans carried out ground-breaking work on urea metabolism. Postdoctoral work encompassed a period in America on a Harkness Fellowship, followed by a very productive few years at the MRC Metabolism Research Unit at Oxford during which he and Krebs (by now Sir Hans Krebs and a Nobel Laureate) elucidated the glyoxylate cycle, an important process in bacterial metabolism. In 1960 Hans was appointed to a Chair at the University of Leicester with the remit to set up a new Department of Biochemistry. In July 1961 Hans and several colleagues set off from Oxford to visit the Department for the first time. Having lunched well en route, it was late afternoon by the time they arrived in Leicester. As it was during the long vacation the University was closed and they were forced to enter the Department, which in those days was located in the Fielding Johnson Building, via an open toilet window. Hans’ first year as Professor was largely taken up with appointing staff and converting the old chemistry teaching laboratories into accommodation suitable for biochemistry research and teaching.

An interview with Ron Whittam Conducted by David Miller and Richard Naftalin on 12 August 2014 Published December 2019 This is the transcript of an interview of the Oral Histories Project for The Society's History & Archives Committee. The original digital sound recording is lodged with The Society and will be placed in its archive at The Wellcome Library. An interview with Ron Whittam Ron Whittam photographed by David Miller This interview with Ron Whittam (RW) was conducted by David Miller (DM) and Richard Naftalin (RN) on 12 August 2014 DM: Let’s make sure we’re starting. Fine. So okay this is David Miller, it’s the 12th August 2014 and we’re are in Leicester at the home of Professor Ron Whittam and we’re here to record for the oral history project of the Physiological Society. So, also here is Richard Naftalin whose voice you’ll hear and Ron Whittam himself, of course. So we’re going to run through elements of Ron’s life and background as he wishes to cover in the usual way. So that’s enough from me. Perhaps Richard if you could just say a few words so that it’s recognised whose voice is whose. RN: Okay, well I’m Richard Naftalin. I’m currently Emeritus Professor at King’s College London but I was, had the privilege of being, in Leicester University and I was appointed lecturer to Ron Whittam’s department of General Physiology in 1968. I came to Leicester as newlywed and as a virgin physiologist to Ron’s department so that was very exciting –at least for me.

  • A Conceptual Framework and Its Application for Exploring Undergraduate Physics Students’ Identity Formation in Relation to Laboratory Work
The gendered doing of physics: A conceptual framework and its application for exploring undergraduate physics students’ identity formation in relation to laboratory work Anna T. Danielsson January 2007 Supervisor: Professor Cedric Linder Dissertation for the degree of Licentiate of Philosophy in Physics with Specialization in Physics Education Uppsala University, 2007 Abstract In this licentiate thesis I explore undergraduate physics students’ experiences of doing laboratory work in physics and, in particular, how this relates to the gendering of physics in relation to their formation of physicist identities. I outline a conceptual framework for exploring the gendered nature of learn- ing physics in the laboratory setting, and in this framework situated cogni- tion and post-structural gender theory are merged together. This allows me to analyze gender as an active process and to relate the dynamics of this process to the emerging physicist identities of the students. Thus, my con- ceptual framework allows for an analysis of the gendered learning experi- ences in physics that goes well beyond the usual ‘women-friendly’ teaching approaches. The conceptual framework has been developed ‘in conversation’ with an empirical study, where thirteen undergraduate physics students were interviewed about their experiences of learning from and doing laboratory work. I found these students to be constituting their physicist identities in relation both to different forms of ‘physicist masculinities’ and to what they characterized as ‘normal femininity’. The results, which are described in- depth in the thesis, are given and illustrated both in terms of the conceptual framing and descriptions taken from the interviews. Further, the results show the importance for teachers to deepen their understanding of students’ iden- tity formation in order to improve the students’ learning experiences in phys- ics, in the student laboratory as well as beyond it.
