Abstract GILROY, JOSEPH WILLIAM. Understanding Paul Laurence Dunbar: A Life and Career in Context. (Under the direction of Dr. Anne Baker.) Paul Laurence Dunbar was one of the most popular poets of his day. He was highly regarded for his black dialect poetry, which earned him the title, “poet laureate of his race.” Dunbar’s second book of poetry, Majors and Minors, was even reviewed positively by the famous critic William Dean Howells. However, despite Dunbar’s popularity, he has also been widely criticized for his black dialect poetry. Many scholars and African-Americans have argued that it is an unsympathetic portrait of blackness meant to appease his paying white readership. This thesis discusses the conditions and circumstances that influenced Dunbar to write black dialect poetry. It places the poet’s life and career in the social, economic, and critical context of the mid-to-late nineteenth century. I conclude that Dunbar’s intentions for his dialect poetry were misconstrued by William Dean Howells’ racially-biased interpretation of Majors and Minors. Jones Professor of English Robert Frank Dean, College of Arts and Sciences 3 ABSTRACT MASTERSON, KELLY A, Ph.D., August 2018, English Beyond Darwin: Race, Sex, and Hereditarian Science in American Literary Naturalism Director of Dissertation: Paul C. Jones “Beyond Darwin: Race, Sex, and Hereditarian Science in American Literary Naturalism” explores the intersections among science, race, and sex in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American literary naturalism. The project traces a cultural history of heredity—the means by which individual traits are acquired and passed to offspring— through turn-of-the-century literature. I contend that scientific and cultural debates surrounding heredity gave African American and women naturalists in particular a new conceptual framework with which to understand the effects of racism and sexism on raced and gendered bodies as well as to explore the extent of individual agency in the face of race- and gender-based oppression. Writers such as Paul Laurence Dunbar, Pauline E. Hopkins, Charles Chesnutt, and Edith Summers Kelley deploy concepts drawn from the science of heredity to show the lasting impact of racism and sexism on the body and on the psyche. -

These questions point to the ways in which affects, feelings, and moods are often more than psychological details but social testimony to the experience of living without the succor of a dependable historical narrative. To answer these questions this dissertation turns specifically to the period between 1890 and 1913 when the pressures of industrial capitalism, scientism, and a retrograde white nationalism came to bear on the first generation of white and black Americans living after the Civil War, and, in this, I turn to literatures of the South. -
