‘British Small Craft’: the cultural geographies of mid-twentieth century technology and display James Lyon Fenner BA MA Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy August 2014 Abstract The British Small Craft display, installed in 1963 as part of the Science Museum’s new Sailing Ships Gallery, comprised of a sequence of twenty showcases containing models of British boats—including fishing boats such as luggers, coracles, and cobles— arranged primarily by geographical region. The brainchild of the Keeper William Thomas O’Dea, the nautical themed gallery was complete with an ocean liner deck and bridge mezzanine central display area. It contained marine engines and navigational equipment in addition to the numerous varieties of international historical ship and boat models. Many of the British Small Craft displays included accessory models and landscape settings, with human figures and painted backdrops. The majority of the models were acquired by the museum during the interwar period, with staff actively pursuing model makers and local experts on information, plans and the miniature recreation of numerous regional boat types. Under the curatorship supervision of Geoffrey Swinford Laird Clowes this culminated in the temporary ‘British Fishing Boats’ Exhibition in the summer of 1936. However the earliest models dated back even further with several originating from the Victorian South Kensington Museum collections, appearing in the International Fisheries Exhibition of 1883. 1 With the closure and removal of the Shipping Gallery in late 2012, the aim of this project is to produce a reflective historical and cultural geographical account of these British Small Craft displays held within the Science Museum. -

We are a family run, rural, marine based establishment along the Wild Atlantic Way primarily engaged in the tourist business. We live on the Beara Peninsula and as well as working in the marine environment, we spend much of our leisure time involved with dinghy racing (we are members of Bantry Sailing Club and Kinsale Yacht Club), Sea Kayaking (we are members of West Cork Kayaking Club) windsurfing, sea swimming and surfing. We enjoy living and working on the sea and we love sharing and showing this wonderful biome with friends, family, visitors and locals alike. We want to preserve and conserve what we have for our (and their) children and grand children to enjoy as much as we do. We would like to see the Marine Spatial Development Plan have Marine Conservation as its central theme. This, as opposed to “marine economic development” which it currently appears to be directed toward. Ireland is lucky in that much of its marine environment is still pristine. In a world where 60% of the planets living organisms have recently become extinct due to anthropogenic influence and where irreversible climate change is less than 12 years from now, we feel that the baseline report on the MSDP does not nearly begin to address these critical issues but instead focus on an outdated economic policy and resource grabbing. -

A TALL TALE OF TALL SHIPS by PETER LYONS At the end of 1990, when it became apparent that the Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race was going to come to Ireland for the first time, some members of the Northern Ireland Area Old Gaffers Association got to talk. Alan Hidden, our Area Hon. Secretary had received the rules governing the participation of craft in the Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race. He mentioned to Adrian Spence, the owner of VILIA, that his boat was eligible to enter the race. Adrian queried this with Alan who told him that to enter a boat in the Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race, it had to have a waterline length greater than thirty feet and that half of the crew must be between the ages of 16 and 25. Adrian being an adventurous type had his imagination stimulated by this information and the next thing I knew was that I was being asked when my holidays could be taken the following summer. I work in the manufacturing industry and my holidays are set from year to year, but when I checked the relevant dates I discovered I could go on the trip by extending my holiday by one or two days, I told Adrian this and although the furthest I had sailed previously had been various day sails to Scotland and the Isle of Man he said he would start the ball rolling to enter VILIA in the 1991 Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race. The next problem to overcome was who was going to be the crew. -

Galway, Ireland Tel: + 353 91 485790, Email:[email protected], Web: www.Geo-Mara.com Marine Archaeological Assessment Non-Technical Summary: DeepSea Fibre Networks Ltd. have commissioned Geomara Ltd. to undertake a maritime archaeological assessment in connection with a proposed new sub-sea telecoms cable system linking Galway, on the west coast of Ireland to Bilbao on the north coast of Spain. This report addresses the section within the Irish jurisdiction. The assessment comprises an introduction to the study area and the identification of cultural heritage sites, features and deposits located along the proposed cable route corridor. In order to provide a comprehensive assessment, an extensive desk-based study of the route corridor was undertaken. The potential impact of the proposed scheme on the receiving environment is addressed and mitigation measures to ameliorate these impacts are presented. Seven sites were identified during the Galway City Council Storm damage mitigation report at or around Ballyloughane beach including a possible old quay and some ships timbers. All the sites are on the shore side of the planned Horizontal Directional Drilling. One potential known wreck site (W09510) including some additional ones nearby are located in close proximity to the cable corridor (Figures 9 – 12). Three archaeological monuments located in the vicinity of the cable landfall in Ballyloughane Strand; a Ringfort (GA-094-059), located in the townland of Rinmore c. -

1967 – Sir Francis Chichester's World Voyage
SPECIAL STAMP HISTORY Sir Francis Chichester’s World Voyage Date of issue: 24 JULY 1967 On 27 August 1966 Francis Chichester left Plymouth in the 53-foot ketch ‘Gipsy Moth IV’ to sail around the world single-handed. After an outward journey of 107 days via the Cape of Good Hope he reached Sydney, Australia, on 12 December, greeted by cheering crowds and whistling ferries. His departure for the return leg around Cape Horn seven weeks later was even livelier, yachts, launches, dinghies, tugs and boats of every description having gathered to see him on his way, with surfboarders, three boatloads of armed police, at least one bagpiper, and (to quote ‘The Times’) ‘lithe girls in bikinis’. Two days previously, on 27 January 1967, he had been knighted for his record of achievement in the navigation and handling of small craft - he had already made several solo Atlantic crossings, been named Yachtsman of the Year in 1960, and awarded the CBE in 1964. By May 1967 he was once more approaching British waters amid growing public excitement. Edward Short, the Postmaster General (PMG), had stated that there would be no additions to the 1967 stamp programme already announced; however on 15 May he contacted the Director of Postal Services, G R Downes, to investigate whether a suitable design for a single stamp might be ready by the time of Sir Francis’ return, which it was thought would be about 26 or 27 May. It was suggested that David Gentleman might be able to produce something in the time, in ‘the grand Sir Francis Drake manner’, by which the PMG meant a fully pictorial and dramatic depiction of the occasion.
